The DrugRisk Resource Center is the Webs largest source for information on prescription drug warnings, side effects and legal news. Visit http://www.DrugRisk.com Dallas, TX (PRWEB) January 30, 2013 The goal of DrugRisk is to improve patient safety through education of the latest drug warnings, recalls, studies and litigation news. In many cases, patients follow litigation to learn more about a drug theyre taking and what questions to ask their doctor, explains DrugRisk representative Ryan Mayer. The resource center previously added a report from the Institute for Safe Medication Practices which ranked anticoagulants like Pradaxa among the highest risk outpatient drugs. The Institute also found that hemorrhage cases submitted to the FDA show bleeding from Pradaxa was nearly 5 times as likely to result in death than with warfarin.* Reports show that experts still disagree about the safety of Pradaxa and its bleeding risks. While there has been no official Pradaxa recall, the FDA recently issued an update that the drug carries the same risks as warfarin.** However, the Americal College of Cardiology has warned that Pradaxa use can significantly increase the risk of bleeding complications compared to warfarin.*** DrugRisk has learned that, due to the number of patients filing a … Continue reading

Drug reduces enlarged prostate with few side effects

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013

Relief from the constant call of nature is the aim of a new drug, tested in rats, which can shrink an enlarged prostate and is likely to have few side effects. By the age of 60 an estimated 70 per cent of men have prostate enlargement. Treatment involves surgery or drugs that block testosterone, a hormone that drives unwanted growth. Side effects can include loss of libido and erectile dysfunction. The new drug, RC-3940-II, developed by Andrew Schally of the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Florida and colleagues works by blocking gastrin-releasing peptide another potent growth factor. In rats, a six-week treatment shrank prostates by 18 per cent. It also shrank human prostate cells by 21 per cent. Importantly, fewer side effects are likely as testosterone pathways are avoided. Triangle drug company specializes in side-effects of cancer therapy

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2013

MORRISVILLE -- Like a marriage with children, the Triangles newest health care company is out of the starting gate with two market-ready cancer drugs and a third on the way. Vestiq Pharmaceuticals made its public debut this month with a risk-aversive business model designed to eliminate the lottery factor in the pharmaceutical field. Rather than assign scientists to toil in laboratories and lawyers to grind it out in regulatory proceedings, the Morrisville company essentially functions as a marketing and lobbying organization for new niche drugs. Vestiq gets involved only at the point when a drug is approved for safe use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, but yet not widely accepted by doctors, pharmacies and insurance companies. Getting approved meds into circulation can be labor intensive, requiring scores of sales pitches and clinical presentations across the country. We dont develop, we dont manufacture, said Vestiq CEO Marty Baum. As a newer entity, a self-funded company, we cant afford a product thats not a 95 percent probability. Betting on overlooked or obscure medications is an option for smaller, underfunded companies to establish themselves. "I would not call it a dominant model but an emerging model, said Steve Stefano, managing partner … Continue reading

Biotechnology startup developing remedy to reduce Parkinson’s disease drug side effects

A drug developer believes it has a treatment that could limit the side effects of L-Dopa. A New Jersey foundations venture investment arm has allocated $500,000 for the new company towards advancing its research. MentiNovas oral drug would curb dyskenesia the involuntary movements caused by long-term use of levodopa, or L-Dopa, a drug taken by many of the 1 million people with the condition. Parkinsons disease, a degenerative disease of the central nervous symptom, kills cells in the brain that generate dopamine which control motor function. The reason why this happens with LDopa and drugs like it is that they intermittently deliver dopamine, and that causes peaks and valleys in dopamine levels that can influence changes in motor function. L-Dopa has been a dominant drug for Parkinsons disease because it has been found to be the most efficacious. Dr. M. Maral Mouradian, a co-founder of the company, is a professor of neurology and director of the Center for Neurodegenerative and Neuroimmunologic Diseases at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway, NJ. By the companys reckoning, dyskenesia related to L-Dopa affects 60 percent to 80 percent of the patients taking LDopa. Foundation Venture … Continue reading
