Pharmaceutical companies creating a society of hypochondriacs? – Video

13-01-2012 18:05 It seems every time you turn on the television you see an ad for a new drug. The US is the only western country that allows direct to consumer advertising of prescription drugs. These commercials leave many wondering if they are in a state of depression. According to the US government, anti-depressant use has grown about 400 percent among Americans in the past two decades. Many argue that doctors take an oath to give people the best care possible and some of these drugs do more harm than good. Doctor Darcy Smith, a licensed clinical social worker, joins us to discuss this growing trend of pill popping and what we can do to get Americans off meds. Some of the most pervasive, expensive and debilitating of these chronic diseases are Central Nervous System disorders which today affect more than 60M Americans. Current therapies are limited; in many cases, while drugs may exist to battle these diseases, the side effects can be worse than the effects of the disease itself. Consider if there was a way to deliver just the right amount of these powerful pharmacologic agents at just the right time and to just the parts of the human body that needed it, avoiding systemic side effects and improving the quality of life for patients. That approach would be the vehicle for radical progress in the fight against disease like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, and Depression, among others. Prostate cancer drug has side effects

Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012

Scientists for the Food and Drug Administration say that an Amgen drug slowed the spread of cancer to the bone in men with hard-to-treat prostate cancer, though the drug did not extend life and carried significant side effects. The Food and Drug Administration will ask a panel of outside experts on Wednesday whether the benefits of Amgen’s Xgeva outweigh its risks, which included bone disease in about 5 percent of patients taking the drug. The agency posted its review of the drug online Monday morning ahead of the meeting. FDA questions new use for Amgen drug

Posted: Published on February 7th, 2012

Associated Press February 6, 2012, 3:55 p.m. Washington— Scientists for the Food and Drug Administration say that an Amgen Inc. drug slowed the spread of cancer to the bone in men with hard-to-treat prostate cancer, though the drug did not extend life and carried significant side effects. The Food and Drug Administration will ask a panel of outside experts Wednesday whether the benefits of Amgen's Xgeva outweigh its risks, which included bone disease in about 5% of patients taking the drug. Xgeva is already approved for preventing fractures in cancerous bones, and for osteoporosis in a different formulation called Prolia. Now Amgen has asked the FDA to approve the injectable drug as a preventive measure for men with recurring prostate cancer that is at high risk of spreading to the bone. Men must have also attempted and failed treatment with hormone therapy. A 1,432-patient study conducted by the Thousand Oaks company showed that the drug slowed the spread of cancer to the bone by about 4.2 months compared with patients who received a placebo. Although that delay was statistically significant, the FDA's reviewers questioned whether it was "an adequate measure of clinical benefit" for patients with prostate cancer. The FDA's … Continue reading

FDA Skeptical of Amgen Drug Ahead of Panel

Posted: Published on February 6th, 2012

Updated with analyst comments. THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (TheStreet) -- Amgen's(AMGN) effort to expand the use of new drug Xgeva to prevent or delay the spread of prostate cancer to the bones of patients is being met with skepticism by U.S. regulators who question whether such a claim has merit since the drug doesn't help patients live longer and may cause more side effects. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration released its critique of Xgeva ahead of an advisory panel scheduled for Wednesday. Amgen already markets Xgeva for the treatment of bone-related side effects in patients being treated for cancer. The biotech firm wants FDA permission to expand Xgeva's label to allow the drug to be used to prevent or delay bone metastases in advanced prostate cancer patients. Amgen shares were down 1% to $68.50 in early Monday trading. Investors have generally not expected Amgen to come out a winner at Wednesday's advisory panel and sales forecasts for Xgeva in this expanded indication are modest if they're modeled at all. In a phase III study which enrolled men with advanced prostate cancer at high risk for spreading to bone, treatment with Xgeva significantly improved median bone metastasis-free survival by 4.2 months … Continue reading

Silver packs a punch as chemotherapy drug

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012

SILVER may have just become even more precious. The metal packs as much of a punch against cancer cells as a leading chemotherapy drug, and could reduce the negative side effects that accompany such treatment. Cisplatin, used to treat a range of cancers, contains platinum. The drug is formed from groups of molecules attached to a platinum atom, creating a compound that reacts with DNA in cancer cells. It is the molecules surrounding the metal that determine how reactive the compound is. Previous studies have hinted that silver compounds could also kill cancer cells. So Charlotte Willans from the University of Leeds, UK, and colleagues subjected silver to the same treatment as platinum to see if they could make an effective cancer drug. The team attached different types of carbene ligands to the silver atoms before incubating varying concentrations of the compound with breast and colon cancer cells for six days. The silver complexes proved to be as effective as cisplatin in attacking both types of cancer cells. Complexes containing a ligand which had two bonds were more effective than those with a single bond, probably because they are more stable - meaning the compound breaks down more slowly and … Continue reading

The US Drug Watchdog Expands Its Vital Yaz Yasmin Birth Control Pill Initiative Focused on Identifying Women Heart …

The US Drug Watchdog is expanding its national investigation of the birth control drugs called Yaz and Yasmin given increasing evidence these drugs may be responsible for serious pulmonary embolism's, deep vein thrombosis, heart attacks, strokes and other serious side affects with users. According to the New York Times, "In September of 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cited Bayer for running misleading television commercials, and for not following proper quality-control procedures at a plant that makes hormone ingredients. In addition, the US FDA was very critical of Bayer for failing to warn about serious possible side effects associated with Yaz, or Yasmin, such as heart attacks, blood clotting, and strokes, in the same September 2009 report." According to the US Drug Watchdog, "Our initiative effects millions of US women, and we want to hear from any Yaz, or Yasmin user, or loved ones, if the user had a heart attack, stroke, blood clotting, or any other serious medical issue." Yaz, or Yasmin users can call the US Drug Watchdog anytime at 866-714-6466, or they can contact the group via its web site at http://USDrugWatchdog.Com (PRWEB) February 03, 2012 According to the US Drug Watchdog, "We are expanding our … Continue reading
