Silver as effective as popular chemotherapy drug to treat cancer
Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2012
Washington, Feb 3 (ANI): Silver is as efficient as a leading chemotherapy drug in treating cancer and may even have fewer side effects, a new study has revealed. Results from the study at the University of Leeds, show that particular silver compounds are as toxic to cancer cells as the platinum-based drug Cisplatin, which is widely used to treat a range of cancers. But the crucial difference is that silver is thought to be much less toxic to healthy human cells, and in some cases, can be beneficial. Silver is currently used for its antiseptic and antibiotic properties, in bandages, wound dressings and water purification filters in the third world. Nausea and vomiting, kidney damage and an increased risk of infection are common side effects of Cisplatin, which is used to treat cancer of the lungs, breast, bladder, testicles, head and neck, ovaries and lymph nodes. "As many are unfortunately aware, chemotherapy can be a very gruelling experience for the patient. Finding effective, yet non-toxic drugs is an ongoing problem, but these preliminary results are an important step in solving it," Dr Charlotte Willans who is leading the study said. "Our research has looked at the structure which surrounds a … Continue reading

Balancing oxaliplatin dose with neurological side effects in metastatic colon cancer
Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2012
However, "Many patients don't receive the necessary dose to try to keep their cancer in check, because their symptoms become too debilitating and their quality of life is reduced," says Andrew Weickhardt, MD, clinical fellow at the University of Colorado Cancer Center. Weickhardt, along with Keith Wells, MD, and Wells Messersmith, MD, CU Cancer Center investigator and developmental therapeutics program co-leader, recently published a review in the Journal of Oncology that describes how to maximize the positives of this tricky balance between oxaliplatin's effects and side effects. "Before, when patients died in a few months, these symptoms were overlooked. Now they're living two to three years and the symptoms deserve closer attention," Weickhardt says. The review recommends two approaches, used alone or simultaneously – what Weickhardt calls a "stop and go" approach, along with supplements that may mitigate the drug's neurological damage. In the stop and go approach, a patient starts oxaliplatin along with another drug and takes both for two months. Then, the patient takes a hiatus from oxaliplatin (while continuing the first drug), and reintroduces oxaliplatin two months later or at the point of disease progression, whichever is sooner. "After about six to nine months of total treatment, … Continue reading

New Drug Treats Fibroids With Fewer Side Effects
Posted: Published on February 2nd, 2012
Drug May Control Bleeding as Well as Older Drug Lupron, With Fewer Hot Flashes Feb. 1, 2012 -- A new drug appears to be effective for shrinking uterine fibroids and controlling the heavy menstrual bleeding they often cause, according to new research from Europe. In one study, the drug ulipristal acetate proved to be much more effective than a placebo for shrinking the non-malignant uterine tumors. In another, ulipristal acetate was found to be as effective as monthly injections of the drug Lupron for reducing heavy bleeding in women with uterine fibroids. Both studies appear in the Feb. 2 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine. Ulipristal acetate is the active chemical in the emergency contraceptive sold in the U.S. as Ella, but the daily doses taken by the fibroid patients in the studies were much smaller than those in the contraceptive. If trials now under way in the U.S. prove positive, New Jersey-based Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Swiss-based PregLem hope to market ulipristal acetate as a fibroid treatment under the trade name Esmya, says Watson spokesman Charlie Mayr. 1 in 4 Women Have Fibroid Symptoms Uterine fibroids are the most common indication for the close to 600,000 hysterectomies … Continue reading

Biomerica Launches New Patented Test to Identify Individuals at Risk of Developing Severe Side Effects From Thiopurine …
Posted: Published on January 31st, 2012
IRVINE, CA--(Marketwire -01/31/12)- Biomerica, Inc. (OTC.BB: BMRA.OB - News) announced that it has launched a new patented Thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) test to detect patients who are at risk of developing severe or fatal side effects if treated with the class of thiopurine drugs that includes azathioprine, mercaptopurine, and thioguanine. Thiopurine drugs suppress the immune system and are used in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, such as inflammatory bowel disease, leukemia and lymphoma, autoimmune diseases and skin disorders such as psoriasis and severe eczema. They are also used to treat organ transplant patients. The most commonly used thiopurine drug is called azathioprine. It is estimated that one in every 300 people lacks TPMT, which is an enzyme that helps remove thiopurine drugs from the body when they are present. Individuals who lack the TPMT enzyme can become severely or fatally ill if treated with normal doses of thiopurine drugs because toxic levels of the drug accumulate. "Currently the two main U.S. reference labs offering TMPT testing charge over $200 per sample. We expect that our test will allow any lab or hospital to lower what they charge for TPMT testing to less than $120 per sample, a 40% … Continue reading

Plavix Side Effects Lawsuit Filed in Illinois State Court
Posted: Published on January 31st, 2012
Posted by Shezad Malik MD JDJanuary 30, 2012 9:29 PM A product liability lawsuit has been filed against the manufacturers of the popular cardiac medication Plavix. The complaint filed against Bristol-Myers Squibb and Sanofi Aventis, allege that the manufacturers of Plavix lied about the drug’s safety and effectiveness. The Plavix complaint was filed in St. Clair County Circuit Court in Illinois and alleges that Plavix caused the plaintiffs to suffer injuries, economic losses and medical costs because the companies provided inadequate warnings and falsely claimed that the popular blood thinner was more effective, and safer, than aspirin. Plavix (clopidogrel) is a blood thinner (anti platelet agent) that prevents blood platelets from sticking together to form clots. Plavix Injuries and Side Effects There is a growing number of Plavix lawsuits filed, in which plaintiffs allege that they suffered injuries as a result of their unnecessary use of Plavix, including gastrointestinal bleeding, severe ulcers, heart attacks, strokes and a blood disorder known as TTP, or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpora. Plavix cited by FDA for off label promotion Plaintiffs claim that the drug makers repeatedly overstated the safety and effectiveness of Plavix. Furthermore, they spotlight that the companies were repeatedly cited by the FDA … Continue reading

Do Pradaxa® side effects include internal bleeding?
Posted: Published on January 28th, 2012
Attorney (866) 735-1102 Ext 672 Posted by William Eadie[1]January 27, 2012 8:25 PM According to a safety communication issued by the FDA[2], Pradaxa (dabigatran) has been reported as causing internal bleeding. The drug – which is used to treat atrial fibrillation – is a blood thinning medication. It is part of a class of drugs known as “direct thrombin inhibitors.” These types of drugs work by inhibiting the enzyme which causes blood clotting that often lead to stroke and death. However, the drug may be thinning blood too much as the medication is excreted through the kidneys hindering the kidneys performance, leading to an abnormally high amount of the drug in the system, thus causing internal bleeding. Potential Pradaxa internal bleeding[3] may include blood in the urine, pink or brown stools, vomiting of blood, bruises with unknown causes, and more. Seek medical attention immediately. No recall has been issued at the time of this writing but the FDA is in the process of investigating these claims of internal bleeding which may have been caused by Pradaxa. The FDA approved Pradaxa in the U.S. in October of 2010. Shortly after its release, numerous reports of internal bleeding and other adverse side … Continue reading
