Aussie drugs scandal shows money talks in sport

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2013

By Tulsen Tollett BBC Sport presenter and former professional rugby player The line from a Rolling Stones classic immediately sprang to mind last week when the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) released its report into the untoward activities and practices being used in sport down under. Some sportspeople, no matter how high they climb, or how many trophies they win, just "can't get no satisfaction". When the federal justice minster and the sports minister front a press conference flanked by the heads of the five major sporting organisations in the country - Australian football, rugby league, rugby union, cricket and football - the alarm bells ring. Even more so when not an inkling of what is about to unfold has been leaked. Solid work indeed. The desire to beat the game has always been around, it is just that these days the stakes are so much higher. When you are talking about an industry worth $9bn (5.89bn) a year in the country where it is being brought into disrepute alone, then there's concern - because whether you are on the side of criminality or fighting it, the one thing that rings true for both sides is that money talks. In a worrying trend, there has been an increase in cases of fake drugs in last three years and efforts by authorities to encourage whistleblowers to report such illegal activity too have failed to elicit the desired response. Of the total of 345 cases of spurious or fake drugs reported between 2009-12 by Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO), 117 were in 2009-10, 95 in 2010-11 and 133 in 2011-12, according to information provided by Health Ministry in response to an RTI query. The CDSCO has tested about 1.37 lakh drug samples in the last three years. Of these, 6,500 samples were declared of sub-standard quality other than 345 cases of fake drugs. The Health Ministry has launched prosecution in 516 cases against various persons for manufacturing, sale and distribution of spurious or adulterated drugs during the period. As many as 345 persons were arrested for selling and manufacturing fake drugs, it said. During 2009-10, a total of 39,248 drug samples were tested and 1,942 were found to be of inferior quality. Drugs suspect free to play NAB Cup

Posted: Published on February 11th, 2013

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou says the alleged drug use in the sport is not a widespread problem, but conceded the non-Essendon player who is subject to an investigation into the use of performance-enhancing drugs is free to play in the NAB Cup. On Sunday, the AFL revealed Essendon and a player from a different team are the only two cases under investigation in relation to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Demetriou said he did not know who the other play was, but admitted that he could be playing in the NAB Cup this week as any potential penalties fall under the World Anti-Doping Agency code and won't be determined until the conclusion of the investigation. "We are not able to notify the particular club where there is a case involving the possibility of WADA prohibited performance-enhancing drug use for this one player and in addition we have not been told the identity of the player in question so I don't know whether this player is a current player or not a current player," he said on Monday. "We only have the authority at this stage to speak to the clubs and advise them whether or not they have been identified … Continue reading

New generation doping drugs hard to test

Posted: Published on February 10th, 2013

The illegal 'new generation drugs' used by athletes and administered by coaches are designed to stimulate growth hormones and are nearly impossible to detect by testing. Peptides can have many benefits for sportspeople, including the reduction of body fat and assistance in the swift recovery from injuries. Legal peptides help the body recover from physical activity and can be taken as supplements. However, the illegal peptides uncovered by the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) and being investigated by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) are used to stimulate muscle growth and have less obvious side effects than steroids. Many peptides aren't approved for human use. These new-age drugs are very difficult to pick up through testing. The use of coercive powers by investigators, such as calling on witnesses is usually the only way to prove illegal use. The ACC report released on Thursday found athletes and officials were part of a 'widespread' use of the growth hormone-releasing peptides. The substances it found in use in Australia were GHRP-2, GHRP-6, CJC-1295, AOD-9604 and hexarelin, all of which promote the release of an increased level of growth hormone into the bloodstream. All except one type are prohibited under WADA guidelines. Read more here: … Continue reading

Australian football, rugby league clubs under drugs cloud

Posted: Published on February 10th, 2013

MELBOURNE (Reuters) - Two Australian Rules football clubs and a number of rugby league teams are being probed for the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs, officials said on Sunday. Federal justice minister Jason Clare, criticised for releasing a damning report into doping in Australian sports last week that lacked details, confirmed that a number of clubs in the competing football codes were under suspicion. Clare said authorities had passed on the names of the clubs to both of the sport's governing bodies. "We've given the names of the clubs to both the NRL (National Rugby League) and the AFL (Australian Football League)," he told state broadcaster ABC. "And the NRL and the AFL have asked for permission to tell the clubs that are affected by the investigation." "The (Australian) Crime Commission agrees and we're taking action to allow both the NRL and the AFL to tell the clubs that are involved in this investigation," he added, referring to Australia's top criminal intelligence unit. "And then it will be up to the clubs to put their hand up and say 'yes, we are one of the clubs that are affected by this investigation'." One of the AFL clubs, the Melbourne-based Essendon … Continue reading
