The black market for prescription drugs in Southern Illinois is alive and well, often sending users of all ages to the emergency room. Many die. Last fall, a young man mixed alcohol with morphine that was extracted from a time-release patch, or fentanyl, which in some cases is 100 times more potent than heroin. To this day, police Chief Bob Smith cant believe he survived. I have never seen an individual that near death and make it, Smith said. It isnt the first time in Harrisburg, or elsewhere in Southern Illinois. In the last two to three years, Smith said, there have been 10 to 15 deaths directly linked to morphine patches. Two of the deaths occurred within a week of each other. A similar problem was seen in West Frankfort. 8 February 2013 Last updated at 09:47 ET Eighteen men have been jailed for their parts in an organised crime group which supplied class A drugs to dealers across Lincolnshire. The men from London, Peterborough, Grimsby, Derbyshire and Boston, were each sentenced to between 16 months and 13 years at Nottingham Crown Court. An East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU) spokesman said the drugs had a street value of about 2m. He added the group was "highly organised" and "professional". Speaking about the investigation - named Operation Latious - leading up to the convictions, EMSOU's Det Ch Insp Joe Elliott said they discovered a very comprehensive set-up in Boston. "They were receiving large amounts of cocaine which was then being supplied to dealers in Boston and Lincolnshire. "It was highly organised in that the group had individuals with different jobs. Some were store men, others were responsible for mixing it and others distributed it to the dealers," he said. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Seniors taking psychiatric drugs may be at extra high risk for falling, new Dutch research suggests. Of about 400 elderly people in the study, those who took medications including antidepressants and antipsychotics were twice as likely to report having fallen three or more times in the previous year, researchers found. The new study can't prove that falls were due to the effects of the drugs, themselves, and not to seniors' underlying medical conditions, for example. But a number of side effects of psychiatric drugs - from changes in thinking and attention to drops in blood pressure - could put elderly people at greater risk for falls, according to Dr. Allen Huang, head of geriatrics at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa in Ontario, Canada. "In my clinical observation, it's usually the first two weeks when people start something new that bad things happen," said Huang, who has studied psychiatric drugs in older adults but wasn't involved in the new research.
