Analyst downgrades Merck on concerns over 2 drugs

Posted: Published on February 5th, 2013

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Shares of drugmaker Merck & Co. declined Monday after two analysts downgraded their ratings, mainly due to worries that results of patient studies could hurt prospects for a few drugs and drag down future revenue and profit. The drugs involved are in two areas where Merck was a pioneer, eventually got hit with generic competition and has since been trying to regain leadership. The company invented the first widely used pills for treating osteoporosis, with its Fosamax, and controlling high cholesterol, with Mevacor, the first drug in the blockbuster class called statins that includes Pfizer Inc.'s Lipitor. Mevacor's successor, Zocor, was an even bigger seller for Merck, with annual revenue of about $5 billion. Future sales of Vytorin, a controversial combination drug on sale since 2004 that includes Zocor, and prospects for a crucial experimental osteoporosis drug called odanacatib were thrown into question Friday as Merck announced its fourth-quarter results. Company executives made some cryptic comments, suggesting significant problems with both drugs. Merck shares fell 98 cents, or 2.3 percent, to close at $40.85. Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., said Friday that it won't apply for approval of odanacatib, a new type of osteoporosis drug, … Continue reading

Idenix drops development of 2 hepatitis C drugs

Posted: Published on February 5th, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) -- Idenix Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday that it is ending development of two hepatitis C drugs after regulators told the biopharmaceutical company the drugs would remain on clinical hold. Shares of the Cambridge, Mass.-based company fell in after-hours trading. The two Idenix drugs, IDX184 and IDX19368, as well as another drug from Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. called BMS-986094, work in similar ways. All three products are nucleotide inhibitors, meaning they are designed to prevent the hepatitis C virus from making copies of itself. In August Bristol-Myers halted testing of BMS-986094 after one patient in the clinical trial died of heart failure following treatment. The drugmaker eventually abandoned development of the product. Idenix has said there are important differences between the drugs, but the Food and Drug Administration placed IDX184 on clinical hold Aug. 16. At the time, it was Idenix's most advanced experimental drug. The FDA also had placed a hold on IDX19368, which hadn't begun patient dosing. The company submitted cardiac safety data on IDX184 to the FDA in December, but said Monday it received word from the FDA this month that the programs for both IDX184 and IDX19368 would remain on hold. Shares of the company … Continue reading

‘Highly unlikely some TDs haven’t taken drugs’

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

By Shaun Connolly, Political Correspondent Monday, February 04, 2013 Outspoken TD Luke Ming Flanagan claimed other Dil members take drugs as he defended his decision to reveal he has experiences of LSD, cocaine, and ecstasy. The Independent TD hit back at suggestions he was sending out the wrong message to young people by saying he was being more honest than his colleagues who are not being truthful. "If people want people in the Dil who have never done anything like I have done, well, then youre not going to get many people in the Dil. "Now, there are plenty of people in the Dil who wont admit it, but sorry if the truth hurts," he told RT. Pressed on whether he was saying fellow TDs were taking drugs, Mr Flanagan said: "It would be highly unlikely that they wouldnt have at some stage." The TD was reacting to criticism after he revealed the full extent of his drug use in the past. Mr Flanagan said football clubs sponsored by alcohol products were sending out a much more harmful message to young people than he was. Controversy was sparked after Mr Flanagan said he took cocaine on "two or three" occasions … Continue reading

Cop wants drugs legalized

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

Retired police Capt. Peter Christ said that his mission to legalize drugs should not be mistaken as an endorsement to use them. Christ, who retired as a police captain in 1989 after a 20-year career enforcing drug laws, insists that the war on drugs can never be won and is doing more harm than good. Christ wants to see all drugs legalized - and regulated. "That doesn't mean I condone using them," he said. "They're all terrible, and if I could convince people not to use them, any of them, I would. But I can't. People are going to do what they want, regardless of whether drugs are legal. What we're talking about is making drugs legal, and then regulating them. Prohibition doesn't work. We've already seen that." Christ, a New York resident, is traveling across the state, with scheduled stops in Warren, Youngstown and Cleveland, to explain his position. On Tuesday, he will address the issue at 7 a.m. at Lake Vista of Cortland, 303 N. Mecca St., Cortland. The free presentation will be in the Park Place Heron Dining Room on the second floor. "The drug war does more harm than good," Christ said. "We're not winning. We … Continue reading

Courses involving tobacco, alcohol and drugs called off, censored at Reed College

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2013

In the early part of the 20th century, radical progressive pioneer Carrie Nation became notorious for fighting the scourge of alcohol by walking into saloons with a hatchet and destroying bottles of liquor. In 2013, the president of small, ultra-progressive Reed College in Portland, Oregon has canceled two classes and forced the alteration of two others over fears that students could be exposed to alcohol, ordinary tobacco or information about the safe use of illegal drugs. The classes at issue are part of Paideia, a unique program at Reed that allows students, staff and alumni to organize and teach short, free, non-credit courses on any topic. Paideia takes place on campus the week before each spring semester starts. (RELATED OPINION: Time to end the drug war) Current student Austin Weisgrau was planning to teach one of the courses, Kombucha and Other Fermentation Basics, reports The Quest, Reeds independent student newspaper. The class was going to cover brewing kombucha a trendy swill made of yeast and live bacteria as well as the fundamentals of fermenting sauerkraut and alcoholic drinks. About a week before the class was slated to begin, Weisgrau received an email informing him that the private schools president, John … Continue reading

Addressing the Legalization of Marijuana – Video

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2013

Addressing the Legalization of Marijuana Barbara Walters: Do you think that marijuana should be legalized? President Obama: Well, I wouldn't go that far. But what I think is that, at this point, Washington and Colorado, you've seen the voters speak on this issue. And as it is, the federal government has a lot to do when it comes to criminal prosecutions. It does not make sense from a prioritization point of view for us to focus on recreational drug users in a state that has already said that under state law that's legal. ...this is a tough problem because Congress has not yet changed the law. I head up the executive branch; we're supposed to be carrying out laws. And so what we're going to need to have is a conversation about how do you reconcile a federal law that still says marijuana is a federal offense and state laws that say that it's legal. When you're talking about drug kingpins, folks involved with violence, people are who are peddling hard drugs to our kids in our neighborhoods that are devastated, there is no doubt that we need to go after those folks … Continue reading
