Drugs found under mattress at Stark County Jail
Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013
A woman arrested with two others and a convicted drug dealer in a Canton house last week was found with illegal drugs under her jail mattress. Heather Tenney, 25, of 1630 Cleveland Ave. NW, was charged at 1:17 p.m. Wednesday at the Stark County Jail with illegal conveyance of drugs into a detention facility, a third-degree felony, jail records said. Officers found an undisclosed number of Xanax pills under her mattress, the jail records said. Tenney was already in the jail being held on felony drug tampering and other drug-related charges. Canton police called to a report of trouble at 712 Greenfield Ave. SW on Jan. 22 arrested her and three other people on drug charges after seizing prescription pills, crack cocaine pipes and other drug paraphernalia. Tenney and the other women were already wanted on misdemeanor warrants. Tenney had been wanted on charges of obstructing official business, possession of drug abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia possession. She remained in the jail early Thursday, held in lieu of more than $100,000 bond. See the article here: Drugs found under mattress at Stark County Jail … Continue reading

Kennett slams drugs 'cop-out'
Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013
Former Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has slammed the AFL's drugs summit as a 'cop-out', saying the competition needs clearer rules that ban illicit drug use for AFL footballers. Speaking on _SEN_ following the AFL's summit on Wednesday, Kennett accused the AFL Players' Association of having too much power in terms of maintaining the status quo with the Illicit Drug Policy. Kennett said the three strike policy and any exemptions for self-reporting drug use should be abolished but added that if the three strikes policy remained, clubs needed to be informed after two strikes. And, he said if the AFL didn't make changes they may be endangering player's lives. "This is a cop out," was Kennett's initial response to the summit. "From what I understand today, it's been a talk-fest. "I have now come to the view, even though, I'm prepared to compromise, that the time has come for the AFL and the presidents to simply say and put in place the simplest policy possible. "That is the use of illicit drugs or performance-enhancing drugs in the code of AFL is not acceptable and if you are caught you will be suspended or banned. "In other words, what we've got is … Continue reading

Earnings Preview: Merck report to detail new drugs
Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Merck & Co., the world's third-biggest drugmaker by revenue, will focus on key sales trends and plans to seek approval of numerous experimental drugs when it reports fourth-quarter results before the stock market opens Friday. WHAT TO WATCH FOR: CEO Kenneth Frazier will discuss how sales are doing in high-growth markets, particularly Japan and China, and for Merck's top medicines, such as the Januvia franchise of Type 2 diabetes pills. Those sales are crucial as Merck tries to make up for revenue lost since its top-selling drug, Singulair for asthma and allergies, got U.S. generic competition. Frazier will discuss performance of Merck's animal health and consumer healthcare businesses, likely noting the latter just got approval to sell a nonprescription version of the overactive bladder patch Oxytrol. And he'll likely discuss continuing efforts to manage costs, as Merck, based in Whitehouse Station, N.J., provides its first financial forecast for 2013. Much of Merck's report, however, will focus on medicines on the horizon or still in patient testing. This year, Merck plans to apply for approval to sell six new medicines, including odanacatib, which could be the first drug in a new class of osteoporosis medicines, and vorapaxar, … Continue reading

Drugs double vision

AFL Players Assoc CEO Matt Finnis, Collingwood CEO Gary Pert , AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou and Dr Peter Harcourt. Picture: Mike Keating Source: Herald Sun TESTING of players for illicit drugs could be doubled for less than $200,000, the AFL says. AFL medical officer Dr Peter Harcourt is believed to have told Wednesday's drug summit that the cost for each club to fund the move would be $10,000. The proposal that clubs be given the chance to pay for extra testing received strong support. In 2011 there were six positive results from 1489 tests conducted. AFL clubs raised the prospect of funding greater target-testing of players they fear may be taking illicit substances. The plan has been put to the new AFL working party on drugs, which includes four club CEOs. Essendon chief executive Ian Robson, a member of the working party, said it would be investigated. "It was one of the things that was mentioned by Peter Harcourt," Robson said. "We had already flagged that the clubs could be more engaged in the prospect of what target-testing looks like. "It is one of the things that emerged as a talking point for the working group. It hasn't been signed … Continue reading

AstraZeneca's drugs sales decline
Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013
31 January 2013 Last updated at 05:04 ET Shares in AstraZeneca have fallen 4% after the drugs company announced a drop in sales and said that the tough conditions would continue. Sales in the last three months fell 16% to $7.28bn, as the firm continues to suffer an erosion of business due to the expiry of patents on its drugs. AstraZeneca says earnings will decline "significantly more than revenue" this year as operating costs rise. The figures reflect tough market conditions, the company said. The difficult trading conditions were underlined by AstraZeneca's decision not to increase dividend payments for the second half of 2012, analysts said. Chief executive Pascal Soriot said in a statement: "Our performance in 2012 reflects a period of significant patent expiry and tough market conditions globally." He joined the company from rival Roche in October, and in March is due to set out his strategy for the business. There has been speculation that Mr Soriot may be looking at a big acquisition over the next few months. AstraZeneca has faced the loss of exclusivity on its best-selling medicines and a thin pipeline of new drugs coming to market. Original post: AstraZeneca's drugs sales decline … Continue reading

Depressed, on drugs…dumped

A father of an AFL footballer delisted at the end of last year speaks out against drug use in the league. Picture: Getty Source: Getty Images WE'LL call him "Dad" and give his son the name "Mick". Mick was delisted at the end of last year by a Melbourne-based AFL club, mainly for being not good enough, but partly because he had lost all interest in playing footy. "I've never seen him as happy as the day he got dropped from the club," Dad said, insisting on the anonymity to protect his son. Mick didn't take drugs until last year. His preferred choice of narcotic was speed and ecstasy tablets, all combined with alcohol. Up to eight of his teammates also took them. It was part of the routine, Dad said, and it is why he thinks the drugs summit yesterday could be the unmasking of a huge problem at footy clubs. "Don't think for a moment any club is clean," Dad said. "Two years ago the clubs tried to get the boys off alcohol and they all turned to the drugs, and I think now they're trying to get them to have a beer again. "And why shouldn't they? … Continue reading

Medicare to adjust payment for dialysis drugs after overspending millions
Posted: Published on January 31st, 2013
The Medicare system is recalculating how much it will reimburse hospitals and clinics for the drugs used to treat dialysis patients after federal auditors found recently that the program could save as much as $880million annually. An analysis by The Washington Post in August showed that the government was overspending by hundreds of millions for just one group of those drugs. The overpayment occurs because the government reimburses hospitals and clinics under an assumption that the drugs are being given at the higher doses widely used in 2007. Since then, however, the use of the drugs has declined significantly, partly because of repeated government warnings about their safety and partly because Medicare removed the financial incentives for using larger doses. Its good that Medicare is finally going to set a new, more accurate price, said Dennis Cotter, president of the Medical Technology and Practice Patterns Institute, a research group, who called for price changes in 2011. Its unfortunate that they could have done this two years ago. This has so far cost taxpayers more than $1.6 billion. The overpayment, however, will continue until new rates are established in 2014. Medicare could propose a new price this June and finalize it … Continue reading

American Drug War – The Last White Hope – Video
Posted: Published on January 30th, 2013
American Drug War - The Last White Hope **Fight Censorship on YouTube** December 2012, marks the 79th anniversary of the repeal of Prohibition in December 1933. Prohibition brought to the United States: an increase in consumption of hard liquor, organized crime taking over legal production and distribution and widespread anger with the federal government. In the Four decades since President Richard Nixon declared the "war on drugs" in 1971, $1 trillion US Dollars have been spent. After spending $1 Trillion dollars on the "war on drugs," the US has the largest prison population in the world, with about 2.3 million behind bars. More than half a million of those people are incarcerated for a drug law violation. About 40000 people were in US jails and prisons for drug crimes in 1980, compared with more than 500000 today. Excessively long prison sentences and locking up people for small drug offenses contribute greatly to this ballooning of the prison population. It also represents racial discrimination and targeting disguised as drug policy. People of color are no more likely to use or sell illegal drugs than white people -- yet from 1980 to 2007, blacks were arrested for drug law violations at rates … Continue reading
