Placebo as good as drugs for kids' migraines
Posted: Published on January 29th, 2013
By Genevra Pittman ReutersA drug-free placebo pill prevents migraines in kids and teens just as well as most headache medicines, according to a new review of past evidence. Researchers found only two drugs known to help migraine-plagued adults reduced the frequency of kids' headaches better than a placebo. And even in those cases, the effect was small - a difference of less than one headache per month compared to the dummy pills. "Parents should be aware that our medication choices aren't as good as they should be," said Dr. Jennifer Bickel, a neurologist and headache specialist at Children's Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Missouri. Bickel, who wasn't involved in the new research, said no drugs have been rigorously tested and approved for preventing migraines in kids, so doctors have to rely on headache drugs made for adults. Those medicines, she added, are "not a miracle cure." For cases when medication may not be enough, Bickel told Reuters Health, parents may want to look into relaxation techniques - such as meditation - for kids with chronic headaches. According to data from the Cleveland Clinic, about 2 percent of young children and 7 to 10 percent of older kids and … Continue reading

New target for rheumatoid arthritis drugs
Posted: Published on January 27th, 2013
Jan. 25, 2013 Researchers at Hospital for Special Surgery have identified a potential new target for drugs to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a protein known as IRHOM2. The finding could provide an effective and potentially less toxic alternative therapy to tumor necrosis factor-alpha blockers (TNF-blockers), the mainstay of treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, and could help patients who do not respond to this treatment. Efforts to develop drugs that hone in on this new target are underway. "This study is an elegant example of the capacity of basic science cell biologists to work with translational rheumatologists to address a clinically relevant question at a basic level," said Jane Salmon, M.D., Collette Kean Research Chair and co-director, Mary Kirkland Center for Lupus Research at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, and an author of the study. "We have identified a clinically relevant target that can be applied to patients in the near term." The study will appear online, ahead of print, on January 25, in the Journal of Clinical Investigation and in the February 2013 print issue. Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease, is triggered, in large part, by TNF-alpha, a small signaling protein usually involved in launching … Continue reading

Drugs in the workplace carry high costs for employers
Posted: Published on January 27th, 2013
Substance abuse problems among Ohio workers can result in workplace injuries, higher medical costs for their employers, more absenteeism and reduced productivity, according to survey data and experts. Employers pay on average $7,000 per employee annually to deal with unaddressed substance abuse problems among workers, according to some estimates. In the hopes of avoiding these and other troubles, many employers in Ohio screen job candidates for drugs and alcohol, and some randomly or routinely test their employees for intoxicating substances. Employers that drug test job applicants and current workers are less likely to have drug users on their payrolls, experts said. Companies across the region and Ohio that conduct drug tests have seen a decline in results that come back positive for drugs. But some experts warn that drug testing is not always effective to identify substance abuse, and simply taking punitive action against people who test positive can be counterproductive. Employers can say to applicants, I am going to give you a chance to come and work for me, but I am also going to be doing random drug testing, and if you come back with dirty urine, then Ill either refer you or terminate you, said Helen Jones-Kelley, … Continue reading

Tell Me the movie – Video
Posted: Published on January 26th, 2013
Tell Me the movie "Tell Me" is not an exploitation movie piece. It is a film that shows all the grim details of modern day slavery. The film literally forces us to experience the cruel, vicious human trafficking business.. It is brutally captured on film in a manner that spares nothing to unveil the atrocities created by soul-less people who ply this trade. The film enables us to have a peek inside the world of human trafficking victims. The squalid living conditions upstairs. The fetid rooms with mattresses on the floor. The medications to induce abortions, the drugs to numb the emotional and physical pain of sexual trauma. The scenes of sexual abuse and rape are unsettling, to say the least. It's a riveting story which tells the story of three, young women who became victims of human trafficking . Maria , a 12 year old lass was sold by her mother to a member of human trafficking syndicates due to extreme hardship. Pamela, on the other hand, is a 16 year-old high school young girl whose dream to enter the modeling and show business world to gain fame and attention turned out to be a nightmare. She was … Continue reading
