China Sets Price Restrictions on Some Drugs

Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013

China set new price restrictions on some pain, fever and respiratory drugs, as leaders attempt to overhaul the country's health-care system and make medicines, including Western brands, more affordable. Retail-price cuts of up to 20% will be implemented February on 400 drugs used for respiratory diseases, pain relief and specialized medicines, the National Development and Reform Commission, China's main economic planning agency, said on its website on Tuesday. Cuts will include products from Pfizer Inc. (PFE), Novartis AG (NVS, NOVN.VX) and Merck & Co. (MRK), according to the planning agency's information. The price cuts, fourth in a series since 2011, come just days after China's Health Minister Chen Zhu announced in a health-care conference that health care in the country is still too expensive. China's leaders, aiming to address the needs of an aging population and a rise in chronic disease, have been overhauling the country's health-care system, expanding the national insurance system and mandating drug cuts in attempt to make doctor visits and pharmaceuticals more accessible. The previous cut, affecting some cancer and blood related drugs, was implemented in October. Chinese price restrictions in recent years have phased out premium pricing on drugs and squeezed pharmaceutical companies' profits. Many … Continue reading

'Drugs Are Fine In Moderation'

Posted: Published on January 9th, 2013

Class A drugs are "safer than alcohol" and the risks and dangers involved in taking drugs are no more than "scaremongering", according to students. Experts have raised concerns at the attitudes students are taking towards illegal substances, particularly the party drug MDMA. Many young people are deeming the Class A drug as posing little risk if "taken in moderation", according to a survey published on Tuesday, with one saying: "By and large experiencing the drugs alleviates much of the fear associated with the unknown." Another added: "The only way you can have a true and valid opinion on any drug is to test it yourself. Whilst I have never believed that any of the drugs I have taken are harmful, after taking them I can now say that in my opinion they aren't harmful and are rather enjoyable when taken in good measure." Despite half of students saying they worry about the potential risks of taking illegal drugs, nearly two thirds of students (61%) have taken them, while 53% of these have tried ecstasy, research by student newspaper the Concrete revealed. The survey questioned 334 students at the University of East Anglia about their drinking habits and drug usage. Out … Continue reading
