First Amendment – Video

First Amendment Long Beach Police arrested this guy who only appeared to be going a little bit fast. He didn't seem to be acting weird, so I think that his 4th amendment rights were violated when they removed his boots to search them. Yes, there had been drugs in that area of the city at the time, but this would be considering profiling just on looks. Also they tell me to take my camera back inside? Uh no thanks! I think you're being naughty and I'm trying to catch it on camera. By: theiran … Continue reading

Drugs Task Force Mystery

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2013

PETALING JAYA: A task force set up by the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS) in 2011 to address price disparity between what is offered to some doctors and that quoted to pharmacies has allegedly been scrapped although the society denies this. This came to light following theSun's front page report yesterday on profiteering by unscrupulous private doctors and clinics which re-sell to third parties drugs they bought at 'preferential prices' from pharmaceutical companies. The reason for this racket is that drug makers do not sell certain pharmaceuticals directly to pharmacies, or price the drugs much higher than what they offer to doctors/clinics, resulting in middlemen buying these drugs from the doctors and then selling it to pharmacies at higher prices. Thus, consumers end up having to pay more for the drugs. The former chairman of the task force, who only wants to be known as Gan, told theSun: "The task force had drafted a 12-point proposal to be given by MPS to drug companies, but the MPS refused to do so." The 12-point proposal included: - Standard pricing structure for health professionals and all types of outlets - Abolishing 'bulk bonuses' to avoid wastage and excess stocks - An official price … Continue reading

Ecuador's school drugs problem

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2013

3 January 2013 Last updated at 07:18 ET By Irene Caselli and Maria Jose Bermeo Guayaquil When 13-year-old Tamara Chevez came home from school last October, she said she was going to her bedroom for a rest. A few hours later her family found her dead. Tests indicated that she had died from a mix of cocaine and sedatives, drugs she allegedly got while at school. Although it was not the first such death in Ecuador's largest city, Guayaquil, what happened to Tamara sparked a media frenzy. For several weeks reporters carried out investigations in schools, uncovering cases of drug dealing among students. Unlike neighbouring Colombia and Peru, the world's largest exporters of cocaine, Ecuador is largely free of coca crops. However, the country is considered an important transit point for drug trafficking to North America and Europe. And that means drugs are available locally for relatively affordable sums. A few grams of marijuana cost as little as $0.50 (30p), while a dose of perica, a derivation of cocaine mixed with other substances, is sold for $1. "Cartels pay intermediaries through money and drugs. These intermediaries distribute drugs to micro-traffickers who use vulnerable groups to sell the drugs, such as … Continue reading

Orphan Drugs: Market Environment Products and Companies

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2013

NEW YORK, Jan. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Reportlinker.com announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue: http://www.reportlinker.com/p01075850/Orphan-Drugs-Market-Environment-Products-and-Companies .html#utm_source=prnewswire&utm_medium=pr&utm_campaign=Drug_and_Medication For the pharma and diagnostic industries, rare diseases can provide significant commercial success. Examples of blockbuster orphan drugs include Novartis' leukaemia drug, Glivec/Gleevec (imatinib), with global sales of US$4,695 million in 2011; and Actelion's Tracleer (bosentan), the current gold standard in pulmonary arterial hypertension with sales of CHF1,522 million (US$1,598 million) in 2011. The combination of government incentives to develop drugs for rare diseases and the promise of commercial opportunity will continue to fuel the industry's interest in orphan drugs; and provide hope to patients with debilitating conditions and high unmet medical needs. In addition, the fast track approval system allows companies to enter the market faster and more cost-effectively with the potential to extend indications. Significant unmet clinical need While orphan diseases are rare, patients with rare diseases are numerous. There are up to 7,000 identifiable rare diseases, affecting an estimated 622 million people around the world. There is a clear need to provide rare disease patients with the same quality of care as other patients, and governments have provided incentives to companies developing orphan drugs to … Continue reading
