Brain, Mind, and the Matrix of Innovation (Bernardo Kastrup) – Video
Posted: Published on January 1st, 2013
Brain, Mind, and the Matrix of Innovation (Bernardo Kastrup) This is a content-rich, fast-paced presentation about the nature of the creative process and its relationship to the mind-body problem. Are innovative ideas generated algorithmically by the brain? Or is brain activity, in fact, an obstacle to creative insight? An intriguing pattern in revealed in this presentation: Creative insight correlates precisely with a reduction of brain activity. Many cases are reviewed to substantiate this pattern: accidental savants, psychedelic trances, brain damage, hyperventilation, meditation, acceleration- and strangulation-induced loss of consciousness, traditional ordeals and initiatory rituals, transcranial magnetic stimulation, etc. The presentation concludes with the surprising idea that, analogously to how lightning is merely the image of the process of electric discharge, the brain is not the cause of mind but an image of the process of mind constriction. As such, the path to creative insight is a de-clenching, a relaxation of brain activity, not its increase. This video is an edited excerpt from a longer recording of the Innomarketing event (innomarketing.nl held on 20-November-2012 at the High-Tech Campus Eindhoven. It is reproduced here with the kind permission of the Innomarketing organization. IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER: Many, if not most, procedures aiming at reducing brain … Continue reading

FDA new drug approvals hit 16-year high in 2012
Posted: Published on January 1st, 2013
LONDON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. regulators approved 39 new drugs in 2012, the most in 16 years, suggesting that pharmaceutical makers are poised for growth after losing billions of dollars in recent years to generic drug makers because of patent expirations. There were eight approvals in December alone, including a new treatment from Johnson & Johnson called Sirturo for drug-resistant tuberculosis approved on Monday, the first new TB drug in decades. The pharmaceutical sector badly needs a pick-up in productivity as companies try to refill their medicine chests after heavy losses to generic manufacturers, which have benefited from a string of patent expirations that peaked in 2012. When generics go on the market at a lower cost, sales of name brand drugs plummet. The tally of 39 new drugs and biological products approved by the Food and Drug Administration compares with 30 in 2011 and just 21 in 2010. At least 10 of the drugs had fast track status in 2012, which enabled them to be reviewed more quickly. It is the highest number since 1996, when 53 so-called new molecular entities won a green light. Inconsistency seen in safety labeling for generic drugs
Posted: Published on January 1st, 2013
FRIDAY, Dec. 21 (HealthDay News) -- More than two-thirds of generic drugs in the United States have safety warning labels that differ from the equivalent brand-name drugs, a new study finds. These labels break U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations that require generic drugs to carry warnings that are identical to those on brand-name drugs. Researchers reviewed more than 9,000 product labels for more than 1,500 drugs listed on DailyMed, a website about drug-labeling information that is maintained by the FDA and the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Of more than 1,000 generic drugs, 68 percent had some discrepancies in their safety labeling. Most had small differences in their labels compared to brand-name drugs, but 9 percent had differences of more than 10 side effects. Other labeling errors included out-of-date information, incomplete data and, in one case, information for another drug, according to the researchers at the Regenstrief Institute in Indianapolis. "Physicians frequently use labeling information, either directly or indirectly, to make prescribing decisions. They need to know about side effects, drug interactions and other safety issues," study leader Dr. Jon Duke, assistant professor of medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine, said in an institute news release. "We … Continue reading

2013 Should Be Interesting for Multiple Sclerosis Drugs
Posted: Published on January 1st, 2013
Times are a-changing. This has been a big year for multiple sclerosis drugs. And 2013 looks like it'll be the start of a major inflection point in the space. Dominant players The market is currently ruled by Teva Pharmaceuticals' (NYSE: TEVA) Copaxone, Rebif -- marketed byPfizer (NYSE: PFE) andMerck KgaA-- Biogen Idec's (NASDAQ: BIIB) Avonex, Bayer's Betaseron, and Novartis' (NYSE: NVS) Extavia, which is the exact same drug as Betaseron sold under a different label (the back story, if you're interested, can be found here). They all have to be injected, which is a turnoff to newly diagnosed multiple sclerosis patients. But they've been around awhile, and doctors have a lot of experience with their ability to slow down the progression of the disease. Biogen and Elan (NYSE: ELN) sell Tysabri, which has to be infused at a doctor's office. Despite efficacy that looks better than the injectable drugs, a potentially lethal side effect pushed the drug to use as a second-line therapy. This year, the companies developed an assay to identify patients more likely to develop the brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, which seems to have invigorated sales for patients who test negative. 2013: The year of the … Continue reading

DRUGS IN SPORT: Don't plead for athletes if they have committed crimes
Posted: Published on January 1st, 2013
01 January 2013 | last updated at 10:57PM After going through the write-up by this ex-athlete as well as the report on the charge ("Ex-Olympian hurdler charged with drug possession", NST, Dec 20), I strongly feel that the writer is under the impression that an offence under Schedule I of the Drugs List does not deserve a punishment under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. As an ex-athlete and a coach to a group of youngsters, one should be aware of the consequences of being caught with drugs. The World Anti-Doping Agency upheld former national athletics coach Harun Rasheed's lifetime ban for telling six national sprinters to skip dope tests last year, and now we have this case involving a National Sports Council coach. With the admittance of possession, I wonder what made the writer ask for reprieve. Having known Ishtiaq for a long time, I am sorry that he admitted to such an offence, fully aware of the Dangerous Drugs Act. In a previous case, it was reported that a senior official had instructed the athlete and a coach in regard to drug abuse. But now, with this latest incident, does the offender's possession and confession need to be considered … Continue reading
