Research and Markets: Pain Therapeutics – Drugs, Markets and Companies: Updated 2013 Global Report on the …
Posted: Published on June 6th, 2013
DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/sfxnpb/pain_therapeutics) has announced the addition of Jain PharmaBiotech's new report "Pain Therapeutics - Drugs, Markets and Companies" to their offering. This report describes the latest concepts of pathomechanisms of pain as a basis for management and development of new pharmacotherapies for pain. Major segments of the pain market are arthritis, neuropathic pain and cancer pain. Because pain is a subjective sensation, it is difficult to evaluate objectively in clinical trials. Various tools for pain measurement are described, including brain imaging. Most of the currently used analgesic drugs fall into the categories of opioids and nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs such as COX-2 inhibitors. Non-opioid analgesics include ketamine, a N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonist. Adjuvant analgesics include antidepressants and antiepileptic drugs used for the treatment of neuropathic pain. Management of pain is multidisciplinary and includes both pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods such as acupuncture, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and surgery. Various pain syndromes require different approaches in management, for example, the main category of drugs for migraine are triptans such as sumatriptan. Over 500 companies have been identified to be involved in developing or marketing pain therapeutics and 165 of these are profiled in the report along with 146 collaborations. These … Continue reading

LAM Therapeutics Launches Operations to Develop Drugs for Rare Lung Disease, Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM)
Posted: Published on June 6th, 2013
GUILFORD, CT--(Marketwired - Jun 6, 2013) - LAM Therapeutics, the first biopharmaceutical company dedicated to identifying and developing drugs for the treatment of Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM), announced today that it has closed a Series A financing with private investors to launch operations. Proceeds from the financing will be used for identification of clinical stage drugs with potential activity against LAM and to conduct clinical trials. LAM is a rare lung disease found primarily in women. Besides the lungs, LAM often affects other organs including lymph nodes and kidneys. LAM is characterized as a destructive, metastasizing neoplasm of smooth muscle-like cells that leads to progressive cystic lung disease. The disorder causes shortness of breath, lung destruction, respiratory failure and death. LAM originates from mutations in tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) genes, resulting in the aberrant activation of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) complex 1 signaling network, which is also activated in the majority of human cancers. LAM can occur in otherwise healthy women (sporadic LAM) or in women who have TSC, a genetic disease associated with benign tumors of the brain, heart, skin and kidneys. Currently, there is no cure or FDA-approved drug for LAM. Leading LAM Therapeutics as President and CSO … Continue reading

Cholesterol Drugs Linked to Muscle, Joint Problems: Study
Posted: Published on June 5th, 2013
By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter MONDAY, June 3 (HealthDay News) -- People taking statin drugs to lower their cholesterol may slightly increase their risk for muscle and joint diseases as well as strains and sprains, a new study suggests. Statins, such as Zocor and Lipitor, are widely used to reduce cholesterol levels and help prevent heart disease. But they're also thought to contribute to muscle weakness, muscle cramps and tendon problems. This new study, based on nearly 14,000 U.S. active-duty soldiers and veterans, confirmed an association between the drugs' use and musculoskeletal injuries and diseases. But the findings need to be replicated in other types of studies and should not deter people at risk of heart disease from taking the medications, said lead researcher Dr. Ishak Mansi, from the VA North Texas Health Care System in Dallas. "Do not stop taking statins; these medications have been life-savers for some patients," Mansi said. "But talk to your doctor about the benefit-risk ratio for you." Whether statins should be prescribed universally in people without risk factors for heart disease, as some in the health care field suggest, is another matter, Mansi said. "The side effects of statins are not totally known yet," … Continue reading

Drugs, guns charges after fatal crash

The driver of a car involved in the death of a pedestrian yesterday in Sydney's north has been arrested and charged with firearm, drug and property offences. Police say that an elderly pedestrian was killed after being hit by a vehicle on Willoughby Road, Willoughby. They say witnesses have told police a utility travelling north crossed a number of lanes of traffic before leaving the roadway. The vehicle hit a bin and street sign, before hitting a 74-year-old man. He suffered serious injuries and died at the scene. After the accident, the 31-year-old driver of the utility was detained by police for mandatory blood and urine testing. His mobile phone was also seized for examination. 'During the course of their inquiries, crash investigators became aware of a possible cache of firearms, weapons and cash at the 31-year-old's Coogee apartment,' police said in a statement. 'This information was referred to the State Crime Command's Firearms and Organised Crime Squad, who applied for and executed a search warrant at a property on Arden Street, Coogee. 'Inside the apartment, police found and seized firearms, ammunition, weapons, illicit drugs, steroids, approximately 200 pairs of brand new sports shoes, and protected wildlife, including snakes and … Continue reading
