Role of Epidemiological Data within the Drug Development Lifecycle: A Chronic Migraine Case Study – Video

Posted: Published on December 11th, 2012

Role of Epidemiological Data within the Drug Development Lifecycle: A Chronic Migraine Case Study A public health seminar recorded on October 17, 2011. Epidemiologists working in the pharmaceutical industry use the principles of descriptive epidemiology in addition to applied concepts and methods to assess the impact, use and effects of drugs in the population and in clinical trial settings. As there is a wide spectrum of data needs and requirements during any drug's lifecycle, a summary, including a real-world example, of the epidemiological data and methods utilized specifically during clinical development phase is timely. This presentation will provide a case study describing how epidemiological data was used to support the registration of onabotulinumtoxinA (BOTOX, Allergan, Inc., Irvine, CA, USA) for treatment of headaches in adults with chronic migraine.From:UCIrvineOCWViews:1 0ratingsTime:57:46More inEducation See the rest here: Role of Epidemiological Data within the Drug Development Lifecycle: A Chronic Migraine Case Study - Video … Continue reading

Alan Watts – The Truth About Drugs Laws – Video

Posted: Published on December 11th, 2012

Alan Watts - The Truth About Drugs Laws http://www.facebook.com Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 -- 16 November 1973) was a British philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and popularizer of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master's degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest but left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Living on the West Coast, Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be best thought of as a form of psychotherapy, not just a religion. Like Aldous Huxley before him, he explored human consciousness … Continue reading

Home Affairs Committee's Drugs Report: Angelus Foundation Says the Prime Minister Should Not Have Rejected a Royal …

Posted: Published on December 11th, 2012

LONDON, December 10, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The Angelus Foundation today welcomed the Home Affairs Committee's (HAC) report but condemned the Government for rejecting a Royal Commission and also not recognising the vital role of drugs education and prevention. The Prime Minister said today he has rejected a Royal Commission because it would be "very, very long-term" even though the HAC report set a time limit of 2015 for its completion. Angelus does not support legalisation. Para 128 of HAC report includes Angelus's evidence to the committee, "The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 has not shown it can be used to reduce prevalence of the new drugs-it should be fully reviewed." A Royal Commission would be highly effective way of carrying through a review of drug law. The PM also said, "Drugs use is coming down, the emphasis on treatment is absolutely right, and we need to continue with that to make sure we can really make a difference. Also, we need to do more to keep drugs out of our prisons. These are the government's priorities" The list of the priorities did not include education or prevention. The Home Affairs Select Committee report 'Breaking the Cycle' highlighted the worrying trend … Continue reading

Youth who overeat more likely to take up drugs

Posted: Published on December 11th, 2012

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Kids and teens who reported overeating, including binge eating, were more likely to start using marijuana and other drugs in a new study based on surveys of close to 17,000 youth. Binge eating - defined by loss of control during overeating - was also tied to a higher chance of depression and becoming overweight or obese, researchers found. "Physicians and parents should be aware that both overeating and binge eating are quite common in adolescents, and these problems put them at risk for other problems, such as drug use," said Kendrin Sonneville, the study's lead author from Boston Children's Hospital. "The earlier we can screen for who is at risk, the more able we are to prevent the onset of drug use," she told Reuters Health. This type of study does not prove that one behavior causes another, but rather that one can be a warning sign of increased risk for the other. Sonneville said doctors should ask kids and teens about their eating patterns, and parents who notice their children eating much more than usual in a sitting should go to their health care provider. Treatment from a dietician or therapist could help head … Continue reading

Drugs Reform: 'Now Or Never', Say MPs

Posted: Published on December 11th, 2012

David Cameron has rejected calls to consider legalising drugs, insisting that the current strategy is working. The Prime Minister dismissed calls from a cross-party group of MPs to hold a wide-ranging Royal Commission to look at alternatives, including legalisation. The Commons Home Affairs Committee claimed Britain had failed to combat major drug dealers and needed to switch approach. It said the UK could learn from Portugal, where drugs have been "depenalised" and the possession of small amounts does not attract criminal punishment. Changes in Colorado and Washington, where cannabis is being legalised, and Uruguay where a state monopoly of cannabis production and sale is proposed, should also be studied, it said. The committee wants the Prime Minister to establish a Royal Commission to start a public debate about drug policy. Chairman Keith Vaz said that action was now imperative and ministers could not afford to "kick this issue into the long grass". But Mr Cameron, on a visit to Cambridge, said: "I don't support decriminalisation. We have a policy which actually is working in Britain. "Drugs use is coming down, the emphasis on treatment is absolutely right, and we need to continue with that to make sure we can really … Continue reading

Mexican architect given light prison term for smuggling drugs to U.S. under duress

Posted: Published on December 11th, 2012

SAN DIEGO (Reuters) - A Tijuana architect who admitted smuggling drugs across the U.S.-Mexico border was ordered on Monday to serve six months in prison in an unusually lenient sentence taking into account that he committed the crime under threats to his family. Eugenio Velazquez, who designed one of Tijuana's most widely recognized landmarks - the cube-shaped addition to the Tijuana Cultural Center - also was ordered to remain under home confinement for six months following his release from federal prison. Velazquez had pleaded guilty to a single count of illegally importing narcotics under a deal with prosecutors that spared him what would have been a much harsher penalty. Prosecutors said they agreed to recommend the lighter-than-usual sentence because Velazquez was able to corroborate assertions that he had been coerced into trying to sneak cocaine into California out of fear for the safety of his family. Claims of coercion in similar cases frequently go unproven, they said. "People we arrest have been saying it all along," said Joe Garcia, the deputy special agent in charge of the San Diego office of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. "More times than not, we are able to debunk those claims." For Velazquez, who also … Continue reading
