The reports say Persons Living with HIV (PLHIVs) who obtain their supply of ARVs from the hospital have been denied their lifeline for the past five months because the drugs are locked up in the Central Medical Stores inTema. This, indeed, is an unfortunate situation because, unlike other drugs, ARVs cannot be easily bought from pharmacy shops. Moreover, the consequence of such a drug holiday is drug resistance, which experts say can lead to the emergence of drug-resistant viruses being transferred to people, with dire consequences for the whole country. Sadly, the unavailability of the drugs is not due to a national shortage but an administrative lapse on the part of KATH administrators. It is a truism that currently the ARV stock is low. Ghana has had problems with the supply of ARVs, simply because the country relies heavily on the Global Fund for resources for its treatment programme. By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter WEDNESDAY, Nov. 7 (HealthDay News) -- A head-to-head comparison of two new type 2 diabetes drugs produced mixed results. In the study, liraglutide (Victoza) was somewhat better than the other drug, exenatide (Bydureon), in lowering blood sugar and weight, but Bydureon was associated with fewer side effects, researchers said. Victoza is injected daily by patients and Bydureon is injected weekly. Both drugs are classified as "glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists." "These treatments are very powerful blood sugar-lowering agents that don't cause [too-low] blood sugar and are associated with weight loss," said lead researcher Dr. John Buse, a professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "That's a unique profile for a diabetes drug." Patients can choose between them, Buse said. A lot depends on what the person is comfortable with. "You lay this all out for patients and help them decide," he said. "The big frontier for patients with a chronic disease like diabetes is adherence to treatment: Patients developing a plan and sticking with a plan in managing their disease," Buse explained. 9 November 2012 Last updated at 04:18 ET Police in County Donegal have said that drugs valued at 210,000 euro (167,500) seized in Letterkenny this week were intended for sale in Northern Ireland. Gardai and customs in the Republic had already seized 140,000 euro (111,690) of a drug called '4 MEC' which has been described as a cocaine substitute. Further searches have since uncovered 70,000 euro (55,846) more of the drug. A 28-year-old man from Portstewart, County Londonderry has been charged in connection with the find. Garda (police) Superintendent Vincent O'Brien said the drugs were being posted to houses in Letterkenny from China, via Germany. "This is part of an international investigation," he said. "We have been assisted by customs officers in Germany, customs officers in Donegal and our own National Drugs Unit. "This has been an ongoing operation where drugs have been sent through the post to particular addresses in Donegal and we have intercepted those drugs."
