Drugs scandal 'will help cycling'
Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012
Double Olympic gold medallist Geraint Thomas says the Lance Armstrong doping scandal will help clean up the sport in the long run. Armstrong has been banned for life and stripped of seven Tour de France titles between 1999 and 2005 for doping. Cardiff's Thomas admits the scandal has tarnished cycling but says the sport is now cleaning up its act. "I think it will help the sport in the long run to clean up some of the rough edges it's got," Thomas said. "It's sad the things that happened back then have tarnished the people doing it now. "Cycling's changed a hell of a lot since then with the out-of-competition testing and all the blood testing. Geraint Thomas won his second Olympic gold at London 2012 "I'll quite happily say that it's one of the cleanest sports around at the minute, I would have thought." Armstrong has been stripped of all results since 1 August, 1998 and banned for life. The International Cycling Union (UCI) has accepted the findings of the United States Anti-Doping Agency's (Usada) investigation into systematic doping. Breakthrough Offers a Better Way to Make Drugs
Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012
An MIT-Novartis collaboration could be a boost for so-called continuous flow manufacturing. Better chemistry: To produce drugs in a continuous-manufacturing method, MIT engineers had to develop several new pieces of equipment, including this reactor, which enabled a faster reaction and eliminated the need for a toxic solvent. Despite the huge amounts of money that the pharmaceutical industry spends on drug discovery, it is notoriously old-fashioned in how it actually makes its products. Most drugs are made in batch processes, in which the ingredients, often powders, are added in successive and often disconnected steps. The process resembles a bakery more than it does a modern chemistry lab. That could be about to change. This summer, a team of researchers from MIT and Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis proved that a continuous production line that integrated several new chemical processes and equipment specially designed for the project could make a higher quality drug faster, and in a less wasteful manner. This more nimble method may even create more opportunities in early drug discovery. In their continuous-manufacturing process, raw ingredients are fed into a parade of heaters, spinners, extractors, and sensors that relay the intermediates through chemical reactions. At the end, round, coated pills … Continue reading

Drugs gang ringleader cash seized
Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012
5 November 2012 Last updated at 07:29 ET The ringleader of a drugs gang claimed to have moved cocaine worth 40m from Spain to the UK has been ordered to hand over 21,000 in crime profits. Keith Blenkinsop, 44, formerly of Winterhope Road, Annan, was jailed for 12 years last year. A judge told him at the time he was "one of the principals in a major cocaine distribution operation". Following his conviction the Crown brought proceedings to seize any proceeds of crime. Blenkinsop was one of five men convicted last year of being concerned in the supply of cocaine between 2007 and 2009. The drug was concealed inside suitcases and holdalls flown by couriers into Prestwick, Glasgow and Newcastle airports. He was also found guilty of trafficking in cannabis and amphetamine over the same period. After the court case, proceedings were started to confiscate any proceeds of crime from Blenkinsop. His counsel Tony Lenehan told Lord Brodie at the High Court in Edinburgh that an agreement had been reached to settle the action. Continued here: Drugs gang ringleader cash seized … Continue reading

ADHD Drugs Didn't Raise Heart Risks for Kids, Study Finds
Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012
FRIDAY, Nov. 2 (HealthDay News) -- Children who take drugs to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are not at increased risk for serious heart problems, according to a new review that confirms previous findings. University of Florida researchers analyzed data from 1.2 million U.S. youths in Medicaid programs in 28 states, and found that the per-year risk of any child suffering a severe cardiac event was about one in 30,000. Severe cardiac events include sudden cardiac death, heart attack and stroke, and are typically caused by underlying heart disease. Children taking ADHD drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin did not have a greater risk of severe cardiac events than other children, according to the study published recently in the British Medical Journal. The results confirm previous studies that concluded that the use of such stimulants by children and young adults does not increase the short-term risk of serious heart problems. "This is a question that has been lingering for about 10 years," study author Almut Winterstein, a pharmacoepidemiologist and a professor in pharmaceutical outcomes and policy in the UF College of Pharmacy, said in a university news release. She noted that stimulants are the third most commonly prescribed medications for children, … Continue reading

Drugs could keep elderly working for longer
Posted: Published on November 7th, 2012
As long as the therapies are found not to have any unwelcome sideeffects, they could play a valuable role by allowing people to remain in work for longer as the workforce ages, it said. Introducing the report Prof Barbara Sahakian, of Cambridge University, said: "This might be of particular use for the older workforce because we know that we don't function cognitively at age 55 or 60 as we functioned in our 20s. "People having to work longer may find that they are not able to keep up with their younger colleagues, so this may be a way to boost cognition and performance for those people." There are concerns, however, that any drugs which begin to be adopted by healthy people would have to be tightly regulated to prevent wealthier or healthier people gaining an unfair advantage. Ethicists believe that as "human enhancement" becomes commonplace, there is a risk people could be pressured into using the technology for fear of falling behind colleagues. This could equally apply to mechanical limbs, or hi-tech hearing and sight aids which are expected to become more widely used but could unfairly advantage certain people at the expense of others if not tightly regulated. Ethicist … Continue reading
