Generic antidepressant pulled over ineffectiveness

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2012

WASHINGTON More Americans than ever are taking generic drugs, as blockbuster medicines like Plavix and Lipitor become available in low-cost versions. But the government's revelation this week that it mistakenly approved a defective generic antidepressant could stoke longtime concerns about the quality of knockoff drugs. The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday Oct. 3 asked Teva Pharmaceuticals to withdraw its drug Budeprion XL 300 after testing showed the drug did not properly release its key ingredient. The drug is supposed to be equivalent to GlaxoSmithKline's popular antidepressant Wellbutrin XL, which is prescribed to treat depression, anxiety and symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. The announcement marked an about-face for regulators, who said in 2008 that the two drugs were essentially the same, despite hundreds of complaints from patients who said they experienced side effects such as headaches, anxiety and insomnia after switching to the generic drug. The FDA has withdrawn generic drugs before, but this appears to be the first case driven by consumer complaints, which continued to pile up after the FDA said the drug was working correctly. "The lesson is that everyone - from pharmacists to physicians to the FDA -- needs to take these reports seriously," said Dr. Tod … Continue reading

Nano-revolution in drugs delivery

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2012

Nano-medicine - using nano-sized particles to deliver drugs - has the potential to revolutionise the treatment of common maternal and fetal conditions, without side effects or risks to the mother or baby, according to a leading researcher. Jeff Keelan, principal research fellow in the University of WA's School of Women's and Infants' Health, said nano-technology had the potential to create drugs that "boldly go where no drug has gone before". "In conventional medicine you take a pill, aspirin say, and it gets dissolved in the stomach, enters the bloodstream and circulates around the body so all of the organs and tissues in your body get exposed to that drug," he said. "It is very non-selective." Nano-medicine is a bit like adding a postcode to medications - it allows the drugs to be targeted to a specific destination in the body. Nano-particles, which are the "envelopes" that contain the drugs, are usually made out of a biodegradable polymer and are about the size of a virus, ranging from one to 200 nanometres in diameter. A nanometre is one billionth of a metre. The "envelope" or shell has a chemical structure that enables it to be targeted to a specific tissue. Once … Continue reading

Synthetic drugs more dangerous than real drugs

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2012

Synthetic drugs, often interchangeably known as designer drugs, spread from Europe to the U.S. as recently as 2009 and have been a growing method by which users have been getting high purportedly without getting caught, although they are caught. There are many scientific-community observations about synthetic drugs. One is that they are less dangerous than the real thing; thats absolutely false. Owned by Dayton residents, Baytown-based STAT Testing, a drug and alcohol testing firm, has executives who speak candidly about the reality of this phenomenon, experts such as Marketing, On-Sites and Mobile Services Director Heather Barlow, who know that education is one of the keys to addressing the problem. Barlow was the guest speaker at the Oct. 2 Dayton Chamber of Commerce Luncheon held at the Dayton Community Center. Police in Mont Belvieu in June arrested people who were on it; indeed three one night were jailed down there when STAT Testing personnel were doing a town hall meeting in that city. Their accounts of the mind-altering effects should alarm people into never fooling with synthetic marijuana, synthetic cocaine, known as bath salts, or any other manmade drug containing chemical compositions that produce stronger effects of the real thing. Often … Continue reading

FDA fights Web pharmacies selling unapproved drugs

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration is stepping up its fight against counterfeit and other potentially harmful medicine sold over the Internet. The agency is ordering operators of about 4,100 websites to immediately stop selling unapproved medications to U.S. consumers. The move is part of a weeklong global crackdown by regulatory bodies and law enforcement on websites selling counterfeit, substandard and unapproved medicines, aimed at making the global medicine supply safer. It also follows the FDA's launch last Friday of a campaign to warn consumers that the vast majority of online pharmacies do not follow laws or pharmacy industry standards and their products could harm or even kill people. The campaign includes a new website, http://www.fda.gov/BeSafeRx , that explains the risks of fake online pharmacies and how to tell the difference between those websites and legitimate ones. The FDA has sent warning letters to three companies behind most of the 4,100 websites it identified as illegally selling potentially dangerous, unapproved drugs. It's also seized some illegal medicines, filed civil and criminal charges against companies and individuals, and contacted Internet registrars and service providers, asking them to suspend the 4,100 websites. "This is a first step," said FDA … Continue reading

Fungal meningitis cases spotlight risks from custom-mixed drugs

Posted: Published on October 6th, 2012

Recent fungal meningitis cases are part of a growing concern over contaminated custom-mixed drugs from 'compounding pharmacies' that supply hospitals, clinics, and doctors. The custom-mixed drugs are not FDA approved. Two people blinded in Washington, D.C., in 2005. Three dead in Virginia in 2006 and three more in Oregon the following year. Twenty-one dead polo horses in Florida in 2009. Earlier this year, 33 people in seven states with fungal eye infections. Subscribe Today to the Monitor Click Here for your FREE 30 DAYS of The Christian Science Monitor Weekly Digital Edition And now, at least five people dead and 35 diagnosed as sick with fungal meningitis that authorities say has been linked to steroid shots for back pain. All these tragedies involved medicines that had been custom-mixed at what are called "compounding pharmacies" laboratories that supply hospitals, clinics and doctors to a much wider degree in the U.S. than many people realize. These pharmacies mix solutions, creams and other medicines used to treat everything from menopause symptoms and back pain to vision loss and cancer. Unlike manufactured drugs, these products are not subject to approval by the Food and Drug Administration. And some have turned out to be dangerously … Continue reading
