Drugs, arms 'fuel Africa unrest'

Posted: Published on July 17th, 2012

17 July 2012 Last updated at 02:52 ET Growing drug trafficking and unchecked arms trade are fuelling insurgencies across Africa, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has said. In a BBC interview, Mrs Sirleaf said the rise of militant groups - such as Boko Haram in Nigeria and al-Shabab in Somalia - was very disturbing. She also mentioned recent attacks by Ansar Dine militants in Mali. The president added that Liberia would lead a campaign to try to contain the menace. Mrs Sirleaf said that she would now be urging countries which manufactured weapons to sign a treaty to stop arms proliferation. She was speaking on the sidelines of an African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa. The meeting earlier called on the UN Security Council to intervene in the ongoing conflict in Mali. Tuareg rebels and the Islamists took control of northern Mali after a coup. The army seized power in Mali in March, accusing the elected government of not doing enough to halt the Islamist groups. By Leo Olivero Last week during the budget session the Government described drugs as a massive problem the Police Authority said the issue is of considerable concern the PDP have said of the need to eliminate the alcohol and drugs problem amongst our youth the Courts of have warned of their concern also Organisations and Groups have repeatedly registered their own concerns on drugs Parents and Families particularly those who have had a direct drug issue to contend with have also expressed their strong opinions You would think that just about covers everyone in Gibraltar? Well, you would be wrong! The GSD opposition still in complete drugs denial The GSD now in Opposition as they were when in Government are still in Complete Denial regarding drug abuse in Gibraltar. But this is to be expected, particularly after they did very little during their term in office to tackle this serious and growing social problem. In fact reading Mr, Nettos the shadow spokesman for social services budget address there was no mention relating to the drug problem as such yet I say again, no surprises there for me after the calamitous handling by the GSD of the serious drug problem, something … Continue reading

Caught in Honduras drugs crossfire

Posted: Published on July 16th, 2012

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play. Stephen Sackur joins a navy patrol crew in Honduras trying to stop the smuggling of cocaine to the United States. Honduras is in the grip of a drugs war with US drug enforcement agents helping local forces fight organised gangs, who traffic tons of cocaine destined for the United States, as HARDtalk's Stephen Sackur reports. The deep bullet wound in Hilda Lezama's thigh is a livid pointer to Honduras's unwanted status as a new frontline in America's war on drugs. For all of her 53 years, Hilda Lezama has lived in Ahuas, a settlement of wooden homes built on stilts, close to the fast-flowing Patuca river in the remote Mosquitia region of eastern Honduras. She was shot in a US-led counter-narcotics raid on a riverboat two months ago. Four other local people, including two local women, were killed in the airborne attack which involved US drug enforcement agents and Honduran troops. "We were returning from a trip down-river with the fishermen," Hilda recalled. "We travelled at night to avoid the heat. We heard the helicopters above us, but we couldn't see them. "They could have let us dock and then searched … Continue reading

Research and Markets: Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs

Posted: Published on July 16th, 2012

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/pd8hns/medicinal_chemistr) has announced the addition of Elsevier Science and Technology's new report "Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs" to their offering. Antitumour chemotherapy is nowadays a very active field of research, and a huge amount of information on the topic is generated every year. Although many books are available that deal with clinical aspects of cancer chemotherapy, this book addresses the need for an updated treatment from the point of view of medicinal chemistry and drug design. Cytotoxic chemotherapy is gradually being supplemented by a new generation of drugs that recognize specific targets on the surface or inside cancer cells. These therapies are in their infancy, but they hold promise of more effective therapies with fewer side effects. Resistance to antitumour drugs is another important but normally neglected field. The focus of Medicinal Chemistry of Anticancer Drugs is on the mechanism of action of antitumour drugs from the molecular point of view and on the relationship between chemical structure and chemical and biochemical reactivity of antitumour agents, aiming at the rationalization of the action of this type of drugs, which would allow the design of new active structures. - Presents information in a clear and concise … Continue reading

Allen defends C4 Drugs Live show

Posted: Published on July 16th, 2012

16 July 2012 Last updated at 09:36 ET Keith Allen has defended a forthcoming Channel 4 series in which he is filmed taking drugs. The musician and actor took MDMA, the pure form of ecstasy, for the upcoming documentary to examine its effects. Health campaigners said the show ran the risk of being "voyeuristic" and "unrepresentative". But the 59-year-old actor and musician said the documentary was designed as a "forensic analysis" into the physical and psychological effects of drugs. Called Drugs Live, the "radical" four-part series aims to examine the claims and counterclaims made about recreational drugs by testing them in a monitored environment. TV bosses at Channel 4 said the series, to be broadcast in the autumn, would "provide viewers with unmediated access to a live drug trial". Speaking on ITV 1's This Morning, Allen said it was "insane" to suggest the show glamorised drug use. "If you think that I'm glamorising the taking of drugs by spending an hour and 20 minutes for two consecutive Mondays in an MRI scanning machine, then you're insane. We wouldn't want anyone to come away from the programme thinking that MDMA is benign. Read more here: Allen defends C4 Drugs Live show … Continue reading

Two men were arrested following the seizure of two hand guns and various narcotics when police raided a residence to serve a drug search warrant Friday. Police suspected the residence at 149 Shoop Ave. to contain drugs as early as June 10 when the search warrant was signed, resulting in the raid teamresponding and collecting 185 grams of heroin, 44 grams of crack cocaine, 17 grams of marijuana, a 45mm Taurus firearm loaded with 11 rounds, and a Smith and Wesson 9 mm handgun loaded with 17 rounds at approximately 2 p.m, the police reported indicated. Preston Yeldell, 34, and Johnny Taylor, 55, were arrested after officers entered the home where the occupants initially scattered. The five people inside were detained and asked if the residence was used to sell drugs, according to the police report. All answered they either did not know or the home was not used for that purpose. Authorities also seized approximately $1,000 during the search warrant. As police began to pat down Yeldell they found several crack cocaine rocks in his shorts. Taylor was also found with the drug in one of his socks, and admitted to owning two crack pipes in the home. Generic Drugs Make Dent In Global AIDS Pandemic

Generic antiretroviral drugs have made treatment widely available for people like Marie Lourdes Pierre (left), a patient with HIV/AIDS in Haiti. In the absence of a cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS, drug treatment has at least helped lower the pandemic's toll. Since 2003, much of the treatment dispensed in hard-hit countries has come in the form of generic versions of previously expensive drugs. The President's Emergency Plan For AIDS Relief, or PEPFAR, has paid for quite a bit of the medicine. While PEPFAR is credited with having saved 1.2 million lives, authors of a study published in the latest Health Affairs say its success was made possible, in no small part, by changes at the Food and Drug Administration. Starting in 2004, the agency began expediting the tentative approval of generic drugs, allowing production of more than 140 generic versions of common antiretrovirals, or ARVs, to be offered through PEPFAR, according to the study. A tentative FDA approval means the drug meets the agency's standards for safety, effectiveness and manufacturing quality. The approvals are tentative only … Continue reading
