Police 'sorry' over drugs raid error
Posted: Published on May 26th, 2013
26 May 2013 Last updated at 10:02 ET A mother-of-two has received an apology after police raided her home for drugs, but later found they had been given wrong information about the house. Tracy Ripley was at work when the raid happened at her home in Bexhill. She said she received a call to say she was needed at home and went back to find her house turned upside down. Sussex Police said officers obtained a warrant but had received wrong information about the house. The force said it would pay for the damage. Ms Ripley said she arrived to find police vans blocking the road and her front door smashed. She said: "I was mortified. I was just upset. I didn't know what to do. "Me and my family are so anti-drugs, I've never had any connections whatsoever, and I just thought someone had had it in for me. "And then I realised they must have got the wrong address." We accept that the occupant of this house and indeed the property itself have no connection with any drugs offences Read more here: Police 'sorry' over drugs raid error … Continue reading

Drugs find their way into local schools
Posted: Published on May 26th, 2013
Schools are in a tough spot. They can do their best to keep students from using drugs. They can host drug-prevention assemblies, bring in drug-sniffing dogs and build relationships with local law enforcement agencies to keep up with the trends. Still, some students will show up to school high. Schools in the region put a tremendous effort in keeping kids safe and well-educated, but there is always going to be that one or two youth that find a way to infiltrate the securities that be, said David Fialko, prevention specialist with the Council of Southeast Pennsylvania. You dont want to send up the red flags that schools are a drug haven, but kids can get substances in school. When that happens, when parents see their child go from honor roll to rolling joints, from shooting hoops to shooting up, it is often schools that receive part of the blame. Take Janet, a Hilltown mother of five, whose 21-year-old son is a recovering addict. She believes she can pinpoint the exact moment things went wrong in his life: three years ago, when the athletic high-achiever ended up in a remedial math class his senior year at Pennridge High School. He began … Continue reading

New drugs push up PBS spending
Posted: Published on May 26th, 2013
New drugs and more demand for existing medicines are the main drivers for increased spending on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), Health Minister Tanya Plibersek says. Ms Plibersek says a government report co-authored with Medicines Australia released on Monday, Trends in and Drivers of Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Expenditure, shows PBS spending rose by $500 million a year to reach $8.9 billion in 2010-11 financial year. ''This new report confirms growth in PBS spending is lower than forecast, as taxpayers reap the benefits of 2010 legislation which is bringing government subsidies for medicines into line with prices pharmacists pay their suppliers, saving $2 billion over the (four-year) forward estimates,'' she said. The report showed the ageing population and more people with chronic disease were placing pressures on spending for subsidised prescription drugs to Australian residents, Ms Plibersek said. Advertisement ''More than half of PBS spending goes to people aged over 65 years old, with 86 per cent of PBS expenditure going to concessional patients who pay just $5.90 a prescription,'' she said. The minister said that many of the report's findings contradict a separate report released by Medicines Australia last week, which she said had errors, inaccuracies and selected statistics. Medicines … Continue reading

FDA found 392 drugs to be of poor quality last yr
Posted: Published on May 26th, 2013
India, May 27 -- One out of a sample of 20 everyday drugs tested by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were found to be substandard and unfit for consumption. Although some of these substandard drugs may not aggravate the patient's health condition, others could prove to be fatal, said doctors. Between April 2012 and March 2013, the FDA tested 6,716 samples of drugs sold at various chemists stores across the state and found 392 drugs including vitamin tablets, cough syrups and steroid injections, were not up to the requisite standard. The testing, which is done to monitor the quality of drugs being sold by chemists shops, is done on samples collected by FDA drug inspectors from medical stores. "If the drug composition is not perfect, it will have little or no effect on the patient's health. We also label tablets as substandard if they are found to be powdered or if the pH level (acidity) of liquid drugs is not maintained," said Kamlesh B Shende, joint commissioner, FDA. "In such situations, the batch of medicines is immediately recalled and action is taken against the manufacturer." Under the ambit of The Drugs and Cosmetic Act, FDA officials can prosecute, as … Continue reading
