Decriminalize all drugs, including heroin, cocaine and meth, B.C. think-tank urges
Posted: Published on May 24th, 2013
I wonder if there would be as much fuss about allegations Toronto Mayor Rob Ford may have smoked crack cocaine if the recommendations of a new drug policy report were in effect. The Canadian Drug Policy Coalition says calls current policies to combat illegal drugs a failure and recommends decriminalizing drugs such as heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine in order to focus on harm reduction. According to Postmedia News, the report argues allowing personal use of such drugs would result in money better spent on strategies to deal with drug abuse than on the so-called war on drugs. While countries all around the world are adopting forward-thinking, evidence-based drug policies, Canada is taking a step backwards and strengthening punitive policies that have been proven to fail, says the executive summary of the report by the coalition, which is based at Simon Fraser Universitys Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction. The report is likely to get a chilly reception from Prime Minister Stephen Harper's Conservative government. It's stiffened Criminal Code sanctions against drug use and trafficking, with mandatory minimum sentences. Ottawa has rejected more broadly-supported calls to decriminalize marijuana. Postmedia News said the report accused federal and provincial governments … Continue reading

World Ion Channel Modulating Drugs Market Canvassed in Topical Global Industry Analysts Study Published at …
Posted: Published on May 24th, 2013
LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The global ion channel modulators market is forecast to reach a value of USD21.4bn by end-2018, driven largely by deeper understanding of channelopathies and ongoing advances in electrophysiology, particularly automated electrophysiology. Globally, the United States represents the largest market for ion channel modulating drugs, with Europe coming after. Today, around 14% of the commercial drugs in the global pharma business are based upon ion channel modulation. With developments in ion channel screening technology, more drugs are expected to be produced on a commercial scale in the closest run. Presently, a good many global companies, from pharma giants like GlaxoSmithKline and Pfizer to medium and small-sized biotech firms, are making huge investments into ion channel research and drug development. Topical research study Ion Channel Modulators: Market Research Report created by Global Industry Analysts provides in-depth coverage of the ion channel modulators market on a global scale, along with delivering separate comprehensive analytics for the United States, Canada, Japan, Europe, the Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and RoW. It contains annual estimates and forecasts for the 2010-2018 period; besides including a six-year historic analysis for these markets. Furthermore, the report analyzes the competitive landscape and profiles 48 companies including many key and … Continue reading

Death rows grow for want of lethal drugs
Posted: Published on May 24th, 2013
Raymond Bonner, SPECIAL TO PROPUBLICA Posted: Friday, May 24, 2013, 6:00 AM States that impose the death penalty have been facing a crisis in recent years: They are short on the drugs used in executions. In California, which has the country's largest death row population, the chief justice of the state supreme court has said there are unlikely to be any executions for three years, in part due to the shortage of appropriate lethal drugs. As a result, state prosecutors are calling for a return of the gas chamber. Ohio, which is second only to Texas in the number of executions carried out since 2010, said it will run out of the drug it uses in executions, pentobarbital, on Sept. 30. The state has two men scheduled for execution in November, and eight more set to be killed after that. Every state's supply of pentotbarbital, which has been the principal execution drug, expires at the end of November. The shortage has forced death penalty states to scramble on two fronts: They are hunting for new suppliers or different drugs to use, and enacting changes to public records laws to keep the names of suppliers and manufacturers of those alternative drugs … Continue reading

Some statin drugs do seem to raise users' risk of diabetes, study suggests
Posted: Published on May 24th, 2013
TORONTO - Some cholesterol-lowering drugs called statins appear to put users at an elevated risk of developing diabetes, a new study reports. The work, by Toronto scientists, suggests that higher potency statins increase the diabetes risk, while for lower dose statin brands the elevated risk is not seen. At the end of the day, the cholesterol-lowering benefits of the drugs may outweigh the diabetes risks in many cases, said senior author Dr. Muhammad Mamdani. But he suggested it makes sense to try to use a lower dose statin when possible. "If a patient has a really high LDL" the dangerous form of cholesterol "then maybe you do need the high powered stuff like Lipitor and rosuvastatin or Crestor and you can actually go a bit higher on the dose," said Mamdani, director of the applied health research centre at the St. Michael's Hospital's Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute. "But for most of the patients you could probably get away with using something like pravastatin or even lovastatin.... I'd say for the vast majority of patients, those would be just fine." Pravastatin, which is sold as Pravachol or Selektine, has actually been shown to be protective against diabetes in some studies. … Continue reading
