Fever-reducing drugs don't affect speed of children's recovery: study

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2013

In this Feb. 16, 2011 photo, Carlos Cervantes, 3, is photographed from his bed at Children's Hospital Central California in Madera, Calif. This was the third visit for Carlos who was diagnosed with Valley fever. (AP Photo/The Fresno Bee, Eric Paul Zamora) (Eric Paul Zamora) A review of past research finds that fever-reducing drugs have no effect on the speed of children's recovery from an infection, contrary to the fears of some doctors and parents. Researchers have debated for decades whether lowering a sick child's fever helps the recovery process or interferes with the body's ability to fight the infection. Some previous research has shown that giving children fever-reducing "antipyretic" medications, such as acetaminophen, after vaccinations interfered with their immune responses to the vaccines, for example. "There's no evidence that antipyretics slow down recovery," said Alison While, a professor of community nursing at King's College London and senior author of the new study. Nevertheless, While and her coauthor caution in their report in the Journal of Pediatrics, their findings don't mean they encourage parents to use the medications at the first sign of fever either. "Many many parents are using antipyretics with small children whenever they get a slightly raised … Continue reading

'New front' in Australia's war on drugs

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2013

Crime fighters revealed concerns about synthetic drugs as it emerged 23.8 tonnes of illicit sports and recreational substances were seized last year. The haul included the highest number of seizures for performance enhancing drugs in a decade - adding further weight to the ACC's bombshell February report which alleged widespread use of drugs in professional sport. Performance enhancing drug seizures rose 56.9 per cent to 8726 in 2011/12, with 6126 involving steroids and 2600 involving hormones. Other seizures included a single 11 tonne cache of hypophosphorus acid, a chemical used to make methylamphetamine, a record 785.5 kilograms of cocaine, 256kg of heroin, 347kg of amphetamines and 17kg of cannabis. There were 93,000 drug-related arrests in 2011/12 - the highest for a decade - and 809 clandestine drug laboratories discovered. But while the seizure of sports and recreational drugs was welcomed, senior crime fighters also revealed concerns about the increasing popularity of new, synthetic substances mimicking ecstasy, cannabis and amphetamines. The so-called drug analogues' are being invented at a rate of one per week in China, India and other countries, according to a recent European Union study cited in the ACC report. The speed at which these exotic party drugs are … Continue reading

New front opens in Australian war on drugs

The Australian Crime Commission has warned of a dangerous new front in the war on drugs as it revealed a record 23.8 tonnes of illicit substances, worth $5 billion, were seized by customs staff last year. The haul included the highest number of seizures for performance enhancing drugs in a decade - adding further weight to the ACC's bombshell February report which alleged widespread use of drugs in professional sport. Surge in women selling drugs

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2013

The number of women selling illegal drugs in WA has soared 78 per cent in a year, according to a report into Australia's drug trade. The Australian Crime Commission report shows 626 women were "providers" of illicit drugs in WA in 2011-12. The women represented more than 22 per cent of those arrested for importing, trafficking, selling, growing and manufacturing illicit drugs in the State. Only the Northern Territory had a higher percentage at 28 per cent while Queensland recorded the highest overall number of women at 710. The report said Customs seized a record 24 tonnes of illicit drugs - worth $5 billion - in Australia last year, including a big rise in performance enhancing drug seizures. Big hauls included 11 tonnes of a methylamphetamine precursor, 785kg of cocaine, 256kg of heroin, 347kg of amphetamines and 17kg of cannabis. There were 93,000 drug-related arrests in 2011-12, the most for a decade, and 809 drug laboratories were found. In WA, there were more hallucinogenic drugs found, including LSD and "magic" mushrooms, than anywhere else in the country, with a 1255 per cent increase in the amount detected - from 748g in 2010-11 to 10,137g in 2011-12. Not My Kid: Most Parents Unaware Teen Is Using Study Drugs

Posted: Published on May 21st, 2013

Many parents are not aware that their teenage children abuse "study drugs," a new poll suggests. In the poll, just 1 percent of parents said their teenage children had taken drugs such as Adderall or Ritalin without a prescription. That is much lower than the percentage of teens that surveys suggest are using the drugs. For example, a 2012 study of high schoolers found that about 10 percent of sophomores and 12 percent of seniors said they had used the drugs without a prescription. The new finding highlights the growing issue of stimulant drug abuse, or when teens take stimulant medication (or "study drugs") to help them study for a test or stay awake to do homework. Such medications are prescribed for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Teens without the condition may fake symptoms in order to get a prescription, or obtain the drugs from friends. The new findings, from the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health, examined parents' awareness of the issue, surveying parents of U.S. children ages 13 to 17. About 11 percent of parents said their teens had been prescribed stimulant medication for ADHD. Among parents of children who were not prescribed ADHD medications, … Continue reading
