Drugs worth over US$4 billion seized in Australia in 2011-2012:report

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

20 May 2013| last updated at 12:01PM The figure is a 154 percent increase from 9.3 tonnes seized in 2010-11, Xinhua news agency quoted the report as saying. The repport showed there were also 93,000 drug-related arrests and a total of 809 hidden drug laboratories discovered during this period. Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said the key to stopping drug activities is police teamwork and criminal intelligence. "85 percent of the drugs we seize are because of criminal intelligence that our law enforcement agencies collect before the drugs ever arrive in Australia," he said. The ACC also announced record seizures of hormones in performance and image-enhancing drugs. Executive director of ACC Paul Jevtovic said drugs in sports are on the rise, hence the commission's focus on drugs in sport. "In relation to hormones, it's the highest reported detections that we've had in the last decade," he said. "Steroids for example are also one of those things used, and we actually incorporate steroids and hormones in the category of image-enhancing drugs." -- BERNAMA See original here: Drugs worth over US$4 billion seized in Australia in 2011-2012:report … Continue reading

Illicit drugs linked to corruption

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

An alarming increase in the use, seizure and arrests for illicit drugs is the central finding of the Australian Crime Commission's annual report, released on Monday, with significant implications for sport, especially the professional football codes. ACC chief executive John Lawler warns "the illicit drug market remains the principal source of profit for organised crime". He said criminals infiltrate sporting clubs and gain information or compromise players in exchange for illicit drugs, such as amphetamines and cocaine, and use it to spot-bet, or fix matches, capitalising on the myriad gambling outlets now available. Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Graham Ashton issued a similar warning following the AFL's announcement on Thursday of a more than fourfold increase in the number of positive tests by AFL players for illicit substances. Advertisement Ashton said illicit drugs, rather than the performance and image-enhancing drugs that had caught players from Cronulla and Essendon, had a greater potential to compromise the integrity of players and matches. While PIEDs are banned only for elite sportspeople, illicit drugs involve athletes in criminal activity. The NRL admits it is sufficiently concerned about the risk of illicit drugs to consider implementing a centralised program of target and random testing. The ACC's … Continue reading

23 tonnes of drugs worth $5 billion seized across Australia in 2011-12

Posted: Published on May 20th, 2013

The Australian Crime Commission's (ACC) annual illicit drug data report shows drug purity is on the rise and Australia is a target. The ACC handed down its 2011-12 report at Sydney's international mail centre this morning, as the report shows parcel post accounts for thelargest number of illicit drugborder detections. Australian Federal PoliceCommissioner Tony Negus says more than 23 tonnes of drugs worth over $5 billion were seized nationally in 2011-12. That is a 154 per cent increasefrom the 9.3 tonnes seized in2010-11. There were also 93,000 drug-related arrests and a record 809 hidden drug laboratories discovered. Police found the smugglers' methods included concealing drugs in kettles, curry paste jars, safe boxes, batteries and whiteboard markers. Mr Negus says Australia is a target. "We haveintelligence and we are beingtargeted in this country," he said. "Therelative height of theAustralian dollar, the relativewealth of this country comparedto others at the moment meanswe are a target. "But I thinkthe higher rate of seizures we have actually made over the last 12 months showsenforcement is meeting thatchallenge head on."
