Twenty-six positives for illicit drugs

Twenty-six AFL players tested positive for illicit drugs in 2012, a large increase from the previous year. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou described the results as disappointing. There were 26 positives from 1979 tests in 2012, with two of those being from a player testing positive on a second occasion. Twenty-five of those positives were for stimulants such as cocaine and methamphetamines. There were six positives from 1489 tests in 2011. The AFL illicit drugs policy is separate from its testing for performance-enhancing drugs and is done with the support of the AFL Players' Association. 'The rise in detections in 2012 reflects both an increase in the number and effectiveness of target tests conducted as well as the well-documented jump in illicit drug availability and use in the broader community,' said Demetriou. ' ... The AFL playing group largely falls within the high-risk 18-30 male age group and individual players are not immune to peer group pressure and poor decision making. 'However, the use of illicit drugs in the AFL playing group … Continue reading

Bristol-Myers Targets Heart-Failure Drugs in R&D Effort

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. (BMY), pouring resources into new immune system-based cancer drugs, said it also plans to expand development of treatments for congestive heart failure and fibrosis. The drugmaker also isnt ready to give up on therapies for the neurodegenerative malady Alzheimers Disease, despite the failure last year of an experimental compound in the second of three phases of trials. Bristol-Myerss researchers discussed the plans on a call yesterday held by Tim Anderson, an analyst with Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Bristol-Myers is the most dependent of the major U.S. drugmakers on pharmaceuticals, and has no non-drug businesses such as animal health or diagnostics. The New York-based company is ready to expand its research and development areas, said Elliott Sigal, the outgoing head of R&D at Bristol-Myers. About a decade ago, we really reined in the research efforts and focused on certain areas, Sigal said. The company has been revising them slowly over time as we refine the need and refine the science. Bristol-Myers said there are new opportunities in heart failure, a field now dominated by generic medicines. The reason we want to re-engage is that the science has evolved to the point where there are interesting targets, said … Continue reading

26 positive tests for illicit drugs in AFL

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

A sharp lift in the number of players testing positive to recreational drugs has prompted the AFL to revamp its illicit drugs policy. A record number of 26 positive tests for illicit drugs were recorded in 2012, with two of them concerning a player testing positive for a second time. All but one of the positives were for stimulants such as cocaine, ecstasy and methamphetamines, with cocaine topping the list. A similar number of players pre-empted a potential positive test by self-reporting illicit drugs use, but they were not included in the figures. AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou admitted the number of positives was disappointing. "There was a significant and concerning increase in detections last year," said Demetriou. "We saw 26 failed tests compared with six the year before. "The increase is obviously disappointing but it reinforces the need for us to be vigilant and for a medical model that tests players all year around and allows for early intervention." The 1979 tests taken last year was higher than in any of the previous seven years of the policy. It produced a huge increase from the six positives from 1489 tests recorded in 2011. The rest is here: 26 positive … Continue reading

Doping-Use of social drugs on the rise in Aussie Rules

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

MELBOURNE, May 16 (Reuters) - The use of social drugs like cocaine and methamphetamines is on the rise in Australian Rules football with 26 positive tests and a similar number of confessions of use last year for what the Australian Football League (AFL) describes as "illicit drugs". The AFL differentiates between the use of performance-enhancing substances and those drugs more associated with the social environment, dealing with the latter with a combination of education, counselling, treatment and ongoing support. The results, which included positive tests for cocaine, methamphetamines and ecstasy, was a big rise on the six failed tests in 2011 and a disappointment for the league. "The rise in detections in 2012 reflects both an increase in the number and effectiveness of target tests conducted, as well as the well-documented jump in illicit drug availability and use in the broader community," AFL chief Andrew Demetriou said. The league runs a "three strikes" policy for what they consider "illicit drug" use, with players being handed a fine and lengthy ban only when they have transgressed for a third time. AFL club Essendon are currently under a separate investigation by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority over their administration of supplements to … Continue reading

Combining Bone-Building Drugs Makes Bones Stronger

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2013

Don Bayley / Getty Images Two drugs used to treat osteoporosis may be better than either alone in maintaining bone density. Dr. Benjamin Leder and his colleagues atMassachusettsGeneral Hospital found that combining teriparatide (Forteo)and denosumab (Prolia) improved bone density tests among a group of post menopausal women withosteoporosis after a year better than any benefits that currently available drugs provide on their own. Maintaining bone strength is about managing the creation and destruction of bone; teriparatide works by both stimulating bone formation and preventing bone decay, while denosumab primarily inhibits bone loss, so the dual actions may have contributed to the combinations success. Prior studies that combined the popular bisphosphonates, which include Fosamax, with teriparatide have been unsuccessful, but the researchers, who reported their findings in thejournal Lancet, believe that denosumab may work better with teriparatide because it can block teriparatides bone decaying activity more effectively. Bisphosphonates, like denosumab, also blocks the destruction of bone but through a different pathway. (MORE: Kids Who Exercise Are Less Likely to Have Fractures in Old Age) Osteoporosis is more common among women following menopause, since the cells that break down or cause resorption of bone, called osteoclasts, and the cells that form new … Continue reading
