Novartis posts profit gain thanks to new drugs

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

BASEL, Switzerland (AP) -- Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG reported a 6.7 percent increase in profit for the first quarter Wednesday, boosted by new products and emerging markets. Novartis says its net profit rose to $2.42 billion from $2.27 billion in the same period last year despite declining sales of its blockbuster heart drug Diovan, which lost U.S. patent protection last year. The Basel-based company said in a statement the increase a turnaround from the 18 percent earnings drop in the first quarter of 2012 reflected new product launches such as Gilenya for multiple sclerosis and Afinitor for cancer, strength in emerging markets and EU and U.S. drug approvals to offset patent expirations. The newly launched drugs added $4.2 billion in revenue, almost a third of sales, making up for its estimated $500 million in losses during the quarter because of patent expirations. But the quarter was notably marked by the controversy over Novartis' outgoing board chairman, Daniel Vasella, who touched off widespread anger for his whopping 72 million Swiss francs ($77 million) severance package that he later declined because of the Swiss public's outcry. Also Wednesday, Novartis disclosed that its new chairman, Joerg Reinhardt, would be paid 3.8 million … Continue reading

Sex, Drugs, Ratt & Roll

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

Women. Spandex. Drugs. Hair spray. . . . Welcome to heavy metal rock 'n' roll, circa 1980, when all you needed was the right look, burning ambition, and a chance. Stephen Pearcy and supergroup Ratt hit the bull's-eye. What they did with their fame and fortune is a riotous tale of . . . SEX, DRUGS, RATT & ROLL Pearcy was a scrawny, horny, thrill-seeking teenager with an electric guitar who had graduated from backyard parties in San Diego to half-empty dives in Los Angeles before he and his band broke through at Whiskey a Go Go. Cranking out metal just as metal got hot, Ratt was the perfect band at the perfect time, and their hit single Round and Round became a top-selling On a journey that could happen only in America, Pearcy met everyone from Michael Jackson to Drew Barrymore (at age twelve, at a New York nightclub, at 2 a.m.) to Rodney Dangerfield. His infamous partner-in-crime, Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby, a blond Viking with an unsurpassed appetite for drugs and women, cuts a towering and tragic figure throughout. As Ratt scrambled up a wall of fame and wealth, so they experienced the gut-wrenching free fall, after too … Continue reading

FDA to launch tool to detect fake, substandard malaria drugs

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

By Toni Clarke (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has developed a hand-held device capable of identifying counterfeit or substandard malaria drugs and has signed a letter of intent with Corning Inc to manufacture the product. The device, known as CD-3, is a battery-operated tool that uses different wavelengths of light to compare an authentic malaria drug with a potentially fake product, the FDA said on Wednesday. Malaria is a potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease that often causes fever, chills and flu-like symptoms. In 2010, about 219 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide and 660,000 people died, most in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the World Health Organization. "Fake or substandard anti-malarial drugs cause double damage," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement. "Without adequate, prompt treatment, the malaria parasite can kill a person in a matter of days, and inadequate treatment can also lead to the development of drug resistance, potentially rendering all treatment ineffective." The device will be first tested in Ghana, and information from that test will inform additional testing programs in Africa and parts of Southeast Asia, where the rates of malaria infection are high and where counterfeit anti-malarial medicines are prevalent. A global study … Continue reading

19-year-old student arrested for importing drugs

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

A Palmerston North man was arrested today for the importation of controlled drugs following a joint Customs and Police operation. The man, a 19-year old student, will appear in the Palmerston North District Court tomorrow (Thursday 25 April) charged with importing Class A and B controlled drugs. The drugs, which were ordered online, have an estimated street value of between $14,000 and $28,000 NZD. The man received a package sent from Germany which contained approximately 560 tablets of the Class B controlled drug MDMA commonly known as Ecstasy. A further parcel addressed to the man containing approximately 570 MDMA tablets was intercepted by Customs at the International Mail Centre yesterday. Three smaller parcels containing Cocaine, LSD, and MDMA were previously intercepted. "Police and Customs officers executed a search warrant at the man's residential address this afternoon and we believe that he has been importing these drugs for the purpose of supply," says Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Sheridan, Officer in charge of Palmerston North CIB. Customs Acting Group Manager Investigations and Response, Shane Panettiere says Customs is increasingly finding that packages containing small amounts of illicit drugs are linked to illegal overseas-based trading websites, such as Silk Road. "Todays arrest is … Continue reading
