Earl the Pearl: My Story by Earl Monroe with Quincy Troupe Rodale In 1973, the Knicks were one game away from winning the NBA championship. Earl Monroe was on top of the world a superstar guard on the court, a celebrity in New York City. Monroe and his girlfriend, Tina, were walking to his Rolls-Royce outside Madison Square Garden when they came upon three big, nasty-looking, heavyset white cats. Though they wore Knicks hats and shirts, they seemingly didnt recognize Earl the Pearl. They looked at us and then one of the guys pushed me, punched me in the jaw and called me a n - - - er, Monroe writes. I was shocked. In Manhattan? Getty Images Earl Monroe in 1975, two yearsafter he helped the Knicks win a title. Monroe had experienced plenty of racism in his life, but here, now, by fans of his own team? Tina pulled him away, but an enraged Monroe got into his car and pulled out the gun he stored inside. Instead of heading directly to the airport where he was supposed to meet the Knicks for their flight to Los Angeles, he cruised the area around the Garden looking for his … Continue reading

Geelani slams JK Govt over spurious drugs

Posted: Published on April 14th, 2013

Srinagar, Apr 14: Breaking his silence over the supply of spurious drugs to the valley hospitals, chairman of the Hurriyat Conference (G), Syed Ali Geelani Sunday said the fresh development was nothing but natural consequence of oppression that Kashmir is facing since 1947. Geelani said he has come to know that dubious drugs worth Rs 50 crore are being supplied to Valley-based hospitals every year, but government doesnt bother to test whether the medicine are fake or real. Talking to Greater Kashmir, the Hurriyat (G) chairman said the revelation about the fact that spurious drugs were being supplied to various hospitals in Kashmir was a serious concern. I believe this is a new policy of genocide. Earlier, people of Kashmir, especially youth used to face interrogation at the torture centers, but now the agencies and their mentors have decided to follow a new way to annihilate Kashmiris. Now, they kill us through fake drugs, he said. Geelani said if this would have been a case in any other state of India, the ruling government there, would have stepped down. But in J&K, the government doesnt bother about the killings of people through sub-standard drugs. He said the government appoints commissions … Continue reading

Financial crisis caused by too many bankers taking cocaine, says former drugs tsar

Posted: Published on April 14th, 2013

David Nutt, the former Government drugs tsar sacked after claiming that horse riding was as safe as taking ecstasy, has said that the banking crisis was caused by too many workers taking cocaine. Prof Nutt said that too many bankers who took the drug were overconfident and so took more risks and said that not only did it lead to the current crisis in this country, but also the 1995 collapse of Barings bank. He said cocaine was perfect for their "culture of excitement and drive and more and more and more", adding: Bankers use cocaine and got us into this terrible mess. It is a 'more' drug." Prof Nutt is not a stranger to making controversial claims about drugs. His latest attack is on the Government for absurd and insane laws dealing with magic mushrooms, ecstasy and cannabis, which he said were hindering medical research because regulations meant one of the ingredients - psilocybin, which is used to treat depression - was so hard to get hold of. He was sacked as the Governments most senior drugs advisor in 2009 after publishing a paper saying that there was "not much difference" between the harm caused by riding and ecstasy. … Continue reading

Diluted chemo drugs given to 26 other Ontario patients

Posted: Published on April 13th, 2013

A hospital in London, Ont., says 26 more cancer patients received overdiluted chemotherapy drugs, raising the number of people affected in that province and New Brunswick to 1,202. The new total for London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is 691 651 adults and 40 children, the hospital said Friday. Of the adults, the hospital said it believes 117 died. What potential role the diluted chemotherapy may have played in the deaths is unknown. "Given the significant number of LHSC patients impacted and the compressed timeline for the initial file assessment, LHSC has since conducted a second review as a due diligence measure," the hospital said on its website. "Today, as a result of this final review, LHSC is reporting publicly that an additional 26 patients have been identified as being impacted by the chemotherapy compounding issue. "At this time, we have attempted to call all 26 patients and sent letters as well, to express our sincere regret that they, too, are impacted, said Neil Johnson, the hospital's vice president of cancer care. On Thursday, Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne vowed to correct any issues that led to the diluted chemotherapy problem. All 77 hospitals that provide chemotherapy have verified their remaining drug … Continue reading

Former California Governor and movie megastar, Arnold Schwarzenegger has hit thespeaking circuit. Picture: Glen McCurtayne/Coleman-Rayner Source: Supplied Arnold Schwarzenegger in his bodybuilding days. Source: Supplied FORMER muscle man, actor and Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has compared Australian sport's drug scandal to the missile crisis on the Korean peninsula. In a wide-ranging interview with The Sunday Telegraph, the "Governator" described the development of new steroids and performance-enhancing drugs as an "arms race" and drug tests as "missile defence systems". And if anybody in the world can offer an opinion on the two subjects, it's Mr Schwarzenegger. The ex-Mr Universe admitted to steroid use during his bodybuilding days in the 1970s, and also served in the Austrian armed forces at the peak of the Cold War. "The drug makers are very clever," Mr Schwarzenegger said. "They are constantly developing new drugs and substances that are undetectable. "It's like the missile crisis we are seeing at the moment, one side develops a new missile which means the other side has to develop a new defence." Mr Schwarzenegger said the Australian government needed to legislate for more frequent drug tests to avoid the scandal ruining sport forever. "I would say the only way around … Continue reading
