$1.47m worth of drugs seized at airports over 25 days

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2013

The Star/Asia News Network Thursday, Apr 11, 2013 KUALA LUMPUR - The Customs Department has seized drugs worth a total of RM3.6mil over the past 25 days at KLIA and LCCT. Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Lim said the drugs were seized during checks on foreigners and parcels arriving at the airport. "Six people including two women were arrested and charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act. "Those arrested had hidden the drugs in their baggage," he said yesterday. Chik Omar said some syndicates also used courier services to smuggle the drugs in. He said the department was working closely with its counterparts in China, Hong Kong, India and Australia to curb drug trafficking. He said the most recent case was on Friday when a 34-year-old man was arrested at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur for smuggling in 5.05kg of amphetamine worth RM959,000 (S$319,257). "On April 4 at about 11.30pm, a 38-year-old woman from Nepal was arrested at LCCT for attempting to smuggle in 2.68kg of syabu worth RM509,200 (S$207,746). "Earlier the same day, a 29-year-old man from Sri Lanka attempted to smuggle in 10.55kg of ketamine worth RM369,250 (S$150,648) at KLIA," he said. Read more: $1.47m worth … Continue reading

Drugs 'hastened patient's death'

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2013

10 April 2013 Last updated at 16:13 ET Drugs given to a 91-year-old woman who died at a Hampshire hospital were "very likely" to have hastened her death, a medical expert has told an inquest. Gladys Richards was admitted to Gosport War Memorial Hospital (GWMH) in August 1998. She was there to recuperate after a hip operation following a fall. Prof Robin Ferner said the amount of painkillers and sedatives given to Mrs Richards would normally only be given to someone who was dying. She died five days later, having been given diamorphine and sedatives on a continuous basis. Inquests into 10 other deaths at the hospital in 2009 found that drugs were a contributory factor in some cases. Mrs Richards' daughters Gillian Mackenzie and Lesley O'Brien have campaigned for several years for a full inquest. Prof Ferner, who has more than 30 years experience, was asked by Mrs Richard's family to put together a report. He told the hearing there was nothing in Mrs Richards' notes to show why the amount of pain relief had effectively been doubled on 18 August 1998 - at a time when she was already asleep or possibly unconscious. Legalisation of Drugs Has Far-Reaching Effects

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2013

T he British governments bill to make gay marriage legal has already had serious consequences. It has split the Conservative Party wide open and threatens to make its defeat in the next election absolutely certain. Lawyers foresee years of intense argument, appeals and counter-appeals, accompanied by fat fees, stretching into the indefinable future. Once something is legal, theres nothing to prevent a lobby being formed by those who participate in that activity, especially if theres money to be made. An important example of this is the movement to legalise recreational drugs. The war on drugs is difficult and expensive, and there are signs that it is faltering, with battle lines being drawn. Many people are already campaigning to legalise a variety of so-called soft (or recreational) drugs, such as marijuana. Indeed, pro-drug lobbies already exist in the UK and in the US. If society gives way on this, the consequences will be momentous, precisely because the profits to be made from the marketing and selling of soft drugs will be enormous. There will be nothing to prevent a large-scale international corporation being formed solely to manufacture and circulate such drugs. Equally, existing pharmaceutical companies will be able to enter the … Continue reading

Pic: Ahmad Irham Mohd Noor/NSTPUTRAJAYA: An exercise equipment for weight loss turned out to be a smuggling tool for smugglers when 10.55kg of ketamine were found hidden in the machine. KLIA Customs director Datuk Chik Omar Chik Lim said an Indian national, 29, who arrived from Colombo had been arrested. "The drugs were stuffed up the metal base of the equipment," he said adding that the machine was an Ab Circle Pro, a large disc with handlebars and knee pockets that can rotate the body from side-to-side. On the same day, Customs officers also arrested a foreign woman who tried to bring in 2.68kg of methamphetamine worth of RM509,200 in a secret compartment of her luggage. He said the woman, who had flown in from Kathmandu, was arrested at the Low Cost Carrier Terminal while another foreigner was arrested the next day for attempting to smuggle 5.05kg of amphetamine worth RM959,000. All three have been remanded for seven days. Chik Omar said the department had thwarted eight attempts to smuggle 39.72kg of … Continue reading
