NRL drugs saga catches up with Sharks

The drugs scandal which has engulfed Cronulla finally caught up with the Sharks on Saturday night, with coach Shane Flanagan admitting his team's NRL campaign is being destroyed by the ongoing investigation. The Sharks conceded the inaugural Johnny Mannah Cup in a dour 13-6 loss to Parramatta, who bounced back from a 50-0 shellacking at the hands of the Sydney Roosters last round. The Sharks are central to a widespread investigation into alleged performance-enhancing drug use in the NRL, with at least 14 players believed to be under investigation, and have been regularly thrust under the spotlight in the opening rounds. They started the year as one of the competition favourites, but now find themselves with just two wins from five games. Flanagan has steadfastly refused to accept the ASADA investigation as an excuse for poor form to date - but that changed at Parramatta Stadium as he watched his side lurch from one poor attacking option to the next. 'I didn't want to use it as an excuse last week, but … Continue reading

Professor David Nutt given cash by Medical Research Council Wants to investigate how sick patients affected by hallucinogenic substance Backed by Lady Neidpath's charity which campaigns for liberal drugs laws Sacked in 2009 for claiming LSD and ecstasy less harmful than alcohol By Jo Macfarlane PUBLISHED: 16:10 EST, 6 April 2013 | UPDATED: 16:34 EST, 6 April 2013 Tests: David Nutt wants to try out Class A drugs on sick patients A sacked Government drugs tsar has been awarded more than 500,000 of public money to carry out a controversial world-first trial using magic mushrooms to treat depression. Professor David Nutt wants to investigate the way sick patients are affected by a hallucinogenic substance contained in the mushrooms. As president of the British Neuroscience Association, he has been given the cash by the Medical Research Council. The exercise is also backed by shadowy charity the Beckley Foundation, which is run by an aristocrat dubbed Lady Mindbender and lobbies to liberalise laws on mind-altering drugs. But Professor Nutts chances of carrying out his research are being hampered by archaic European, United Nations and Home Office laws which govern clinical trials and make such drugs illegal. He says it is impossible to … Continue reading

Magic mushroom drugs could treat severe depression

Posted: Published on April 7th, 2013

London, Apr 7 (ANI): Drugs made from magic mushrooms could help treat people with severe depression, a new study suggests. Scientists believe that the chemical psilocybin, the psychedelic ingredient in magic mushrooms, can turn down parts of the brain that are overactive in severely depressive patients, the Guardian reported. The drug appears to stop patients dwelling on themselves and their own perceived inadequacies. However, a bid by British scientists to carry out trials of psilocybin on patients in order to assess its full medical potential has been blocked by red tape relating to Britain's strict drugs laws. Professor David Nutt, professor of neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London, said that because magic mushrooms are rated as a class-A drug, their active chemical ingredient cannot be manufactured unless a special licence is granted. "We haven't started the study because finding companies that could manufacture the drug and who are prepared to go through the regulatory hoops to get the licence is proving very difficult," Nutt said. "The whole field is so bedevilled by primitive old-fashioned attitudes. Even if you have a good idea, you may never get it into the clinic, it seems," he added. Research by Nutt has found that psilocybin … Continue reading
