Inspection missed watered-down cancer drugs

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2013

A regulatory inspection was done while chemotherapy drugs were being watered down by a local pharmacy. The Ontario College of Pharmacists did a routine inspection this past January of Marchese Hospital Solutions, which is located in Mississauga and run by the award-winning pharmacy on James Street North. From Feb. 24, 2012 to March 20, 2013, diluted chemotherapy drugs cyclophosphamide and gemcitabine were given to 1,176 patients in London, Windsor, Peterborough, the Oshawa area and Saint John, N.B. The challenge is that its possible to do a thorough inspection of that practice and that doesnt necessarily mean that you are going to detect an error, said Lori DeCou, spokesperson for the college, speaking generally about pharmacy inspections. The college accredits the provinces 3,500 community pharmacies and inspects them every three to five years. It also regulates the pharmacists who mix the drugs. The college didnt discover the problem with the chemotherapy drugs. Instead, a Peterborough hospital pharmacy worker noticed by chance one of the bags looked too full. I will trust that the college is doing what theyre supposed to be doing, said NDP health critic France Glinas. I hope theyre doing their job. Cancer Care Ontario, the provincial government agency … Continue reading

Cancer drugs to stop bioweapons

Two cancer-combating medicines show potential for protecting U.S. troops and civilians from biological weapon attacks from pathogens like monkeypox. Just this week, monkeypox was involved in some of the eight cases of possible contact with dangerous biological agents at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Md., the Frederick News-Post reported. USAMRIID said last week there were 14 accidents in total involving personnel in full-body protective suits in 2012. Part of the Department of Defense, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency counters weapons of mass destruction from chemical, biological and radiological through to nuclear and high yield explosive threats. The agency is funding St Louis Universitys Mark Buller, who will look at cancer-fighting drugs Gleevec and Tasigna for preventing and treating monkeypox exposure. The Monkeypox threat Monkeypox is similar to smallpox. First found in monkeys, the disease was reported in humans for the first time in 1970, but the first U.S. outbreak didnt occur until ten years ago. In that outbreak (which is believed to have been unintentional), Americans became sick from contact with infected prairie dogs. The disease can also spread from person to person through face-to-face contact or by touching an infected persons body … Continue reading

Cramer: Investing in Future of Cancer Drugs

Posted: Published on April 5th, 2013

Onyx Pharmaceuticals Jim Cramer said that Onyx is known for the drug Nexavar, which is used to treat liver and kidney cancer. "It is a remarkable drug because these cancers have stymied doctors for years," he said. In addition to the drug's current success, it may have other uses too. "It's also being studied for thyroid cancer and breast cancer," said Cramer. To provide perspective on the total profit potential, it's already doing a billion dollars in sales globally, Cramer said. "And in September the FDA approved Stivarga, a colorectal cancer drug that Onyx developed in partnership with Bayerthis could be a billion dollar drug, and Onyx gets a 20% royalty," said Cramer. Also the Mad Money host said to keep an eye on an Onyx treatment for multiple myeloma. "The FDA approved it last July and it could potentially be worth $2.3 billion in sales by 2018," he said. In addition, Cramer said they're developing a breast cancer drug with Pfizer that's in phase 3 trials. "This could ultimately generate peak sales of $5 billion, and Onyx gets an 8% cut, which comes to $400 million."
