Last week the Supreme Court heard arguments in a case about prescription drugs that involves a great deal of moneyincluding yours. The case concerns whether its legal for brand-name drug firms to strike financial deals that delay competitors entry into the market. Drug firms typically are awarded 20-year patents, though some of that time is eaten up while the drug is in development and before it begins earning revenues. In the last few years, would-be generic competitors have challenged the legality of a drugs patent, hoping to be able to sell a generic version before the patent term ends. Americans Struggling to Pay for Prescription Drugs If a generic competitor is successful in their patent challenge and the two companies reach a settlement, some brand-name drug companies have offered to pay the generic firm if it delays bringing its generic versionwhich costs consumers much less money than the brand name drugto the market for a period of time. Chandigarh, March 31 (IANS) International boxer Vijender Singh allegedly consumed heroin 15 times from December 2012 to February 2013 while his colleague Ram Singh took it five times, Punjab Police said Sunday as it announced seizure of huge quantities of lifestyle drugs used in parties. Based on international prices for these drugs, police said the haul was valued at Rs.484 crore. A police spokesman said Sunday that police in Fatehgarh Sahib district had recovered 10 kg of party drug 'Ice' (methamphetamine) and 230 kg of raw material (pseudophedrine) from which it is made. About Vijender, he said: "In investigation, it has been established that boxers Ram Singh and Vijender Singh took heroin from (arrested Canada-based drug dealer) Anoop Singh Kahlon and Rocky for personal consumption between December 2012 and February 2013. "As per investigation conducted so far, Vijender Singh consumed the drug about 12 times and Ram Singh about five times. However, they did not actively connive with the smugglers in their activities and nothing was recovered from them - as such both of them are not being arrested in the case at this stage," the spokesman said. Fatehgarh Sahib (Punjab), Mar 30 (ANI): Police recovered a huge cache of drugs worth crores from the residence of a Sub Inspector in a raid in Fatehgarh Sahib in Punjab on Saturday. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Fatehgarh Sahib H.S Mann gave the statistics of the opium recovered from the government official's residence. "We recovered 2Kgs and 600 grams of Opium from the house of Sub inspector Sarbjit Singh and one kilogram of unidentified powder was also recovered which we are examining," said Mann. "A lot of material used to package these drugs was recovered as well, there is a 12 gage gun and some shells of AK-47 ammunition was also found along with eleven mobile phones," he added. Police personnel were taken aback by the large quantities of drugs along with packing equipment and guns and ammunition that were recovered. Mann further said that a report would be sent to higher authorities, and added that they would take necessary action in this case. The government is trying to establish the scale of production of drugs like cannabis, heroin and illegal pharmaceuticals.
