Diabetes drugs may affect pancreatic cells
Posted: Published on March 26th, 2013
Published: March. 25, 2013 at 10:59 PM GAINESVILLE, Fla., March 25 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers said they found pancreatic abnormalities in patients who had taken a widely used type of drug for type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mark Atkinson, professor of pathology and pediatrics at the University of Florida who was the study leader, and Dr. Peter Butler, director of the Larry L. Hillblom Islet Research Center at the University of California, Los Angeles, found cell mass was increased about 40 percent in the pancreas of deceased organ donors who had type 2 diabetes treated by incretin therapy. Incretin therapy takes advantage of the action of the gut hormone glucagon like peptide 1 (GLP-1) to lower blood sugar in people with type 2 diabetes, the researchers said. Although there have been conflicting reports on the effects of the incretin class of drugs on the pancreas in animal studies, this is the first report to note such changes using human pancreas, the study said. "There is an increasing appreciation that animal studies do not always predict findings in humans," Butler said in a statement. The study, published in the journal Diabetes, found the pancreas of the individuals who had been on incretin … Continue reading

First North Korea ignored anti-nuke rules. Now it’s selling drugs , too?
Posted: Published on March 26th, 2013
Some of North Koreas diplomats posted in Eastern Europe have been sent abroad with drugs, according to a story in the South Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo, and told to raise $300,000 for the fatherland. Under the guidance of Room 39, a secretive agency that managed the private coffers of former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, the North has been producing various types of illegal drugs and selling them abroad. South Korean authorities estimate North Koreas annual output of illicit drugs amount to 3,000 kg that translate into revenues of between $100 million and $200 million. Does this mean the sanctions are working? Smuggling drugs using diplomatic meansis such an attractive ruse that criminals havedisguised drug shipments as diplomatic pouches. This isnt even the first time that reports have surfaced of North Koreasstate-sponsored drug deals abroad: The country has a long history of exporting amphetamines to nearby China, tolerating and even directly supporting a fairly robust drug trade. Proving that either substance abuse or precipitation transcends culture, Chinese slang for crystal meth is also ice, and using it is ice skating, Quartz has confirmed with Eveline Chao, an expert in Mandarin slang. The Washington Posts Max Fisher attributesthe drug-smuggling to the … Continue reading

Two men and a woman were charged with multiple drug, explosives and firearm offences, and appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday. Tess Carkeet, 25, was granted bail on 12 charges, including trafficking in and producing dangerous drugs, and possessing counterfeit money. Drugs kingpin
Posted: Published on March 26th, 2013
An international crime network responsible for importing more than 50 tonnes of cannabis and cocaine into the UK has been smashed. The last remaining kingpin, Philip Baron, pleaded guilty to conspiracies to import drugs and money laundering today. A crime network responsible for importing more than 50 tonnes of cannabis and cocaine into the UK over the past 15 years has been dismantled by the Serious Organised Crime Agency. The five-year investigation involved: During the course of the investigation there were drug and cash seizures throughout the UK, as well as in Spain and South America. There's no doubt Baron and his associates were operating at the top end of organised crime. He lived a lavish lifestyle abroad, portraying himself as a legitimate businessman, while orchestrating the importation of huge amounts of drugs into the UK. There is clear evidence that his criminal activity was having a direct impact on communities in many of our towns and cities. He recruited people whom he could trust to perform specific roles and moved drugs and cash around in a business-like fashion. Baron thought he was untouchable but we were able to work with partners, both here and overseas, to completely dismantle the … Continue reading

Supreme Court weighs deals to delay generic drugs
Posted: Published on March 26th, 2013
WASHINGTON A government attorney urged the Supreme Court to allow authorities to crack down on cash deals among prescription drug makers that delay the introduction of generic drugs and keep consumer prices high. The so-called pay-for-delay deals, which allow brand-name drug companies to keep cheaper generic drugs off the market for a time, violate antitrust laws, the Federal Trade Commission argued Monday. "It's unlawful to buy off the competition," said Malcolm Stewart, the deputy solicitor general who represented the FTC and the Justice Department. "It's an agreement not to compete," he said, which is "presumptively illegal." The FTC said that more than two dozen such deals cost consumers $3.5 billion last year. Companies such as CVS Caremark Corp., Rite Aid Corp., Walgreen Co., Albertson's and Safeway Inc. joined the FTC in urging the court to rein in the deals. But the FTC's attorney ran into skeptical questions from several justices who said the government's argument ignored the patent rights of the brand-name drug makers. A patent gives a drug maker 20 years to sell a drug exclusively and to earn monopoly profits. So long as the patent it still valid, the brand maker is entitled to keep out competitors, they … Continue reading

Drugs network 'dismantled' by police
Posted: Published on March 26th, 2013
26 March 2013 Last updated at 09:55 ET An international criminal network that smuggled over 52 tonnes of drugs into the UK has been dismantled after the boss admitted his role, police said. Philip Baron, 58, from Salford, pleaded guilty to importing cocaine and cannabis and money laundering at Liverpool Crown Court. He was caught after a five-year joint police probe that saw 89 arrests and 30 people sentenced for various offences. Baron was living a luxury lifestyle with homes in Spain, Dublin and the UK. The Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) said the network was responsible for about 6% of all cannabis shipped into the country - 51 tonnes - over the last 15 years. The drugs had an estimated street value of 300m. Police say the group set up 12 virtual offices around the country, where they would have the drugs delivered to, and about 10m of cash was laundered from a base in Wilmslow, Cheshire. During the police probe, named Operation Beath, officers intercepted 15kg of cocaine, with a street value of 2.5m, when it arrived at an office in Bolton. The criminals used details of established companies to label packages full of drugs and had over … Continue reading
