Carioca Trailer – Video

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2013

Carioca Trailer Carioca is a first person RPG which simulates a dangerous Brazilian favela where players can choose the course of actions which suits their self-imposed goals. The game tries to generate an emergent narrative by embedding narrative cues in the environment as well as presenting a tactile gameworld. Via their interaction with the game and its characters, the players can change the meaning of life in the favela - for better or worse. All characters in the game (including the player) are controlled by statistical values that define their needs. For example, a character's hunger value increases over time making it hungry enough to warrant eating twice a day. In order to satisfy these needs, characters move to a "food area", a "rest area" etc. According to the type of NPC (civilian, druggie or gangster), they can beat, mug, kill, buy/sell drugs, have legitimate jobs or scavenge among garbage. The action to be performed by NPC is decided by prioritizing its various needs and picking the most important action at that moment. An important element of the game is that NPCs rate their relationships with every other character in the game - including the player. Having good relationships … Continue reading

Special Report – Quest for Survival – Video

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2013

Special Report - Quest for Survival This Special Report talks about the issues ailing the villages surrounding the Indo-Pakistan border along the state of Punjab. We reached the Dhinda border post and interacted with the BSF jawans who after repeated requests allowed us to go near the border fence. Pakistani villages were barely 15 meters away where the movement on the foreign territory was clearly visible. We experienced the life inside bunkers, at view points of the BSF jawans and even saw what an army tower looked like from where you could see the posts in J K. Drive inside the border villages was not easy because of the difficult terrain and hostile weather. But once you enter the villages, one feels that life here is not easy. Farmers owning land beyond the border fence are fighting for adequate compensation as they are allowed to do farming for a specific number of hours. Moreover, their land was snatched away from them by the BSF and Home Ministry for building the border fence way back in 1995. Since then, their livelihoods have been drastically affected, heightened by reality of security issues, inability of getting loans and that they cannot grow crops … Continue reading

Cricketer Maynard on Drugs, Alcohol When Hit by Train, Sky Says

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2013

English cricket player Tom Maynard had drugs and alcohol in his system when he was hit by a London Underground train last year, Sky News reported on its website. The 23-year-old was electrocuted by stepping on a live rail as he fled police on June 18 and was then struck by an underground train near Wimbledon Park station in June, an inquest into his death heard today, Sky said. Forensic tests showed Maynard, who played for county club Surrey, had cocaine and ecstasy in his system and a toxicology test showed he was nearly four times over the legal drink drive limit, Sky reported. Forensic pathologist Simon Poole told the court Maynard was hit by a train but appeared to already be unconscious, adding his injuries included burns consistent with contact to a live train rail, Sky said. Maynards car was stopped by police at about 4:15 a.m. local time after it was seen driving erratically, Sky said. He then ran away and was found 55 minutes later one-half mile away on the train line, the broadcaster said. To contact the reporter on this story: Bob Bensch in London at bbensch@bloomberg.net. The Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) takes the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the …

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2013

MADRID, Feb. 26, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The fifth annual BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the Development Cooperation category goes to the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) for "developing and delivering new, effective and affordable treatments for poverty related diseases including Chagas disease, sleeping sickness, malaria and leishmaniasis affecting the world's most vulnerable populations," according to the award citation. DNDi, in the jury's judgment, "represents an institutional model of good practice, translating scientific research to development cooperation, through knowledge management and delivery of results to disadvantaged populations suffering from neglected diseases." (Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130226/DA66850) DNDi's Executive Director Bernard Pcoul expressed his delight "for the organization, but also for those suffering neglected diseases, who are what this initiative is all about." "Despite the major progress achieved in global health over the last century, there remains a significant equity gap and many diseases affecting the poorest populations are still neglected," the citation said. "This represents shortcomings of market incentives resulting in only 10 percent of the world research expenditure being spent on diseases that account for 90 percent of the global health burden. Controlling and eliminating these diseases is a vital component of the strategy to alleviate poverty." "A neglected disease is … Continue reading

The Professional Cricketers' Association is to review its drug testing following Mr Maynard's death The death of a cricketer who was struck by a Tube train while drunk and high on drugs was accidental, a jury has decided. Cricketer Tom Maynard fled from his car after being stopped by police near Wimbledon Park station shortly after 05:00 BST on 18 June, an inquest heard. The Cardiff-born batsman landed on a live track as he tried to get away. The 23-year-old Surrey player died from multiple injuries, Westminster Coroners' Court was told. A post-mortem examination showed he was nearly four times the legal alcohol limit to drive and had also taken cocaine and ecstasy in the form of MDMA after a night out with his two flatmates in Wandsworth, south London. The only people who would judge Tom on the findings of the inquest are people who didn't know him. Tests on hair samples indicated Mr Maynard, who had previously played for Glamorgan and was tipped as a future England international, may have been a regular drug user up to three-and-a-half months before his … Continue reading

Newest Diabetes Drugs Linked to Higher Pancreatitis Risk

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2013

MONDAY, Feb. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Diabetes patients who take the latest class of drugs to control blood sugar levels are twice as likely to develop pancreatitis as those who take other medications to control blood sugar, according to a new study. The drugs Januvia (sitagliptin) and Byetta (exenatide) are glucagon-like peptide-1-based (GLP-1) therapies, which are used by millions of Americans with diabetes. Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, the organ that releases hormones such as insulin and glucagon, as well as enzymes that help digest food. Pancreatitis is a painful condition that can be dangerous if left untreated. People with diabetes are already at higher risk for pancreatitis because of the role the pancreas plays in the condition. In this study, researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore compared nearly 1,300 type 2 diabetes patients who took one of the GLP-1 drugs with the same number of type 2 diabetes patients who took other medications. Those who took the GLP-1 drugs were twice as likely to be hospitalized with acute pancreatitis within 60 days of first taking the drugs than the other group of patients. The GLP-1 drugs appeared to affect the pancreas in ways that trigger inflammation, according … Continue reading
