Posted: Published on February 19th, 2013

Former Sunderland player Lewis Gibbons has been banned from football for two years after he failed a drugs test. Gibbons, 18, was released after testing positive for two drugs following a youth match last September. "Lewis not only let our club down, he let himself and his team-mates down massively," said Sunderland academy manager Ged McNamee. "We took the strongest possible action in terminating his contract as every player knows the severe consequences." McNamee continued: "We have, however, worked to ensure that support and assistance was available to the player and his family through what has undoubtedly been a difficult and challenging time for them." The substances involved were a metabolite of cocaine and cannabis. Gibbons' ban has been backdated to 18 October 2012, the date of the FA's provisional suspension. Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne added: "Empowering and educating our young people to make the right choices and decisions, both on and off the field, is fundamental to our Academy philosophy and ethos. The abuse of prescription drugs has been cited in a review into Australian swimming's poor performance at last year's London Olympics. Just before the Games, the AOC banned athletes from using prescription sedatives during the Games. Swimming's governing body, Swimming Australia Limited (SAL), have launched an investigation into the drugs claims, with AOC president John Coates awaiting the results. 'SAL has indicated they will investigate the possible misuse of prescription drugs including Stilnox by members of the swim team,' Coates said in a statement on Tuesday. 'The use of those drugs being a breach of (Australian) team policy. 'If the claims are substantiated and the individuals involved are identified, the AOC will consider their conduct ... and consider sanctions.' Four-time Olympic gold medallist Libby Trickett on Tuesday agreed with the findings of an independent … Continue reading
