Fertility treatment as safe as natural conception as stillbirth rates fall

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

The improvement is primarily due to new regulations which limit the number of embryos which can be transferred into the woman to avoid risky multiple births. We have this idealised perception of happy, healthy twins being pushed around Asda, but what you dont see is the desperate complications that many twin births bring, said Professor Charles Kingsland, consultant gynaecologist at Liverpool Women's hospital and clinical director of Britain's largest NHS fertility unit. With embroy transfer we used to have an approach rather like throwing mud at a wall. The more mud you throw the more we thought would stick. But we are now much more selective in the number of embryos we implant. 75 per cent of women at our clinic now just have one embryo. And it makes birth far safer. The worlds first test-tube baby, Louise Brown, was born in 1978 at Oldham Hospital. But the success of the breakthrough was marred by the number of women who lost their babies. In the late 1980s and 1990s nearly one in eight single IVF babies was born prematurely compared with just one in 20 of those conceived naturally. For twins it was even higher, with 50 per cent likely … Continue reading

Vitamin D Deficiency Linked to Pediatric Deaths

Posted: Published on January 20th, 2015

(PRWEB) January 20, 2015 Pediatric and Developmental Pathology Vitamin D is essential for absorbing calcium and for calcium metabolism. In newborns and young children, Vitamin D deficiency, especially when accompanied by hypocalcemia can cause unexpected death. Studies suggest that there is also a correlation between Vitamin D deficiency, early childhood asthma, and children with multiple infections. Finally, lack of vitamin D may cause bone fractures. Receiving the right levels of calcium begins in the womb and continues through birth and development, so the mothers intake is as important as the childs after birth. An article in the new issue of Pediatric and Developmental Pathology presents data from 2009 to 2012, examining 183 cases of death in children between the ages of 2 days to 10 years. Vitamin D status was known and examined in 51 of these cases. Along with blood samples, X-rays were also taken to examine for fractures. Cases were classified into 4 categories: vitamin D deficiency (VDD), vitamin D insufficiency (VDI), vitamin D suboptimal (VDS), and vitamin D adequate or normal (VDN). Seventeen children were seen to be VDD, 24 VDI, 10 VDS, and in one case had VDN. Vitamin D is critical in absorbing calcium and … Continue reading

More needed to curb high rate of genetic diseases among Saudis: expert

Posted: Published on January 16th, 2015

Riyadh: A scheme to curb marriages within relatives in Saudi Arabia is being intensified with a compulsory pre-marriage medical tests now broached to cut the high rate of genetic diseases among the population. Dr Ayman Al Sulaiman, a genetic researcher and consultant at King Faisal Hospital in the capital Riyadh, told Saudi TV that a 2004 survey showed endogamy (marriage between close kin of the first or second degree or even in the same family) in Saudi Arabia was around 53 per cent. Now, that figure has climbed to 67 per cent. There should be intensified efforts to curb marriages within relatives," he said. "In this respect, I suggest compulsory pre-marriage medical tests. A drive to discourage marriage among relatives among Saudis was introduced 11 years ago. The state-supported programme, dubbed 'Healthy Marriage', discourages endogamy. It has reported that 3.25 million Saudis seeking to marry relatives were tested since its founding 11 years ago. Dr Al Sulaiman said the drive had succeeded in persuading at least 60 per cent of them not to go ahead with the marriage within close relatives. In the beginning, the response was below eight per cent we are now encouraged to reach a response rate … Continue reading
