IVF postcode lottery hitting couples who want a family

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2014

Custom byline text: helen puttick health correspondent The first report to show how health boards are performing against a new target to cut delays for in vitro fertilisation (IVF) shows centres in Aberdeen, Dundee and Edinburgh are hitting the goal early. At the country's biggest unit, in Glasgow, it is a different story. Of those who started IVF in the city this summer, 63 per cent had waited for longer than the target of 12 months. Patients may already have spent two years trying to conceive naturally before they are referred for IVF and, as they approach their late 30s, their chances of success recede. Delays beginning treatment can have a significant impact on a couple's chances of starting a family. Professor Richard Fleming, an expert in fertility treatment at Glasgow University and founder of the Glasgow Centre for Reproductive Medicine, said: "The worst way you can treat infertility of any nature is to build in a delay." The only NHS IVF centre in Glasgow, the West of Scotland assisted conception unit at Glasgow Royal Infirmary (GRI), has experienced two turbulent years. In November 2012 there was a slump in the number of women successfully conceiving through IVF - and … Continue reading

Carnegie’s Marnie Halpern named AAAS Fellow

Posted: Published on November 25th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Nov-2014 Contact: Natasha Metzler nmetzler@carnegiescience.edu Carnegie Institution @carnegiescience Baltimore, MD--Biologist Marnie Halpern of Carnegie's Department of Embryology has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) for her "fundamental contributions to developmental biology, particularly using novel genetic approaches to study patterning of the nervous system." Halpern has been a staff scientist at Carnegie since1994. Using the tiny zebrafish, Danio rerio, Halpern explores how regional specializations occur within the neural tube, the embryonic tissue that develops into the brain and spinal cord. The zebrafish is ideal for these studies for various reasons, but most importantly because the embryos are transparent, allowing scientists to watch the nervous system develop and to identify mutants easily. Her group has been performing screens to identify the genes that control the brain's asymmetry and they have developed methods to affect laterality. Allan Spradling, director of the Department of Embryology, remarked: "Marnie has paved the way for understanding how our nervous systems are patterned using her novel methods. She exemplifies what Andrew Carnegie had in mind when he established this institution to support exceptional researchers." Halpern received her B.Sc. in biology from McMaster University in Ontario, Canada, and … Continue reading

Dr. Michael Kettel of San Diego Fertility Center Gives An Inside Look at Freezing Eggs on NBC

Posted: Published on November 24th, 2014

San Diego, California (PRWEB) November 24, 2014 Dr. Michael Kettel, a leading fertility expert at the San Diego Fertility Center, recently appeared on NBC to discuss egg freezing as a viable and increasingly accessible fertility preservation option. Egg freezing has been trending in the news recently, with new company benefits at Facebook and Apple now covering this expensive procedure for women. [The companies] see it as a way to take care of the women who are on a career hot path. Says Dr. Kettel. Up until a few weeks ago, egg freezing was never covered by insurance or company healthcare benefits and required a significant financial investment from women and couples. But with the latest developments in benefit offerings for women and with many women delaying starting a family until their thirties things are starting to change. We see it all the time. Says Dr. Kettel. A week doesnt go by before a woman will come in and ask about their options. Egg freezing is a fairly simple process that is accessible to women of all childbearing ages, although younger women generally have higher success rates due to the age of their ovaries at the time of freezing. To prepare … Continue reading

Scientists hail new ‘3 parent baby’ technique

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

The timing of such a report is crucial as the Government prepares to push ahead with legislation which would make the UK the first country in the world to create babies with genes from three biological parents despite strong opposition over ethical and safety concerns. The plans are backed by many UK scientists and by families who have suffered from inherited disorders. But a growing number of critics say the process crosses an ethical line by manipulating DNA in ways that will be passed down generations. Stuart Newman, professor of cell biology and anatomy at New York Medical College, has expressed concern that pairing up different genes in an arbitrary fashion could lead to developmental or physiological malfunctions. And Professor Evan Snyder, who chairs the scientific panel advising the US Food and Drug Administration on mitochondrial transfer, this week said there were still too many safety issues to approve the technique. Legislation in the UK is expected to be laid before Parliament within weeks, with a vote due as early as January. However, any new research which could potentially reduce the risks of the technique could help push the crucial amendments to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act forward. The … Continue reading

Three parent babies are unsafe, warns top scientist

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2014

London: The science that could allow babies with three parents to be born in Britain is unproven and may be unsafe, a leading US scientist warned Monday night. The government could give the go-ahead as early as next year for children to be born using genetic material from two mothers and a father making the UK the first country in the world to license the technique for clinical use. But Professor Evan Snyder, the top scientific adviser on the issue to US authorities, Monday warned there were unresolved safety concerns. The procedure is designed to give couples who have endured the heartache of repeatedly miscarrying or burying much-longed-for children the option of having a healthy family. It helps women with damaged mitochondria, which power cells by turning food into energy. The defect causes serious illness in one in 6,500 babies and is behind 50 genetic diseases, many of which kill in infancy. Women carrying damaged mitochondria can also miscarry repeatedly and often face the heartbreaking choice of whether it would be best to remain childless. But scientists want to swap healthy mitochondria from an egg donated by a woman into the egg of the mother-to-be. The UK Human Fertilisation and … Continue reading
