The structure of cartilage noted in the Quran

Posted: Published on November 14th, 2014

Information about the stages of human development inside the mothers womb is provided in the verses of the Quran. It is said in verses that the bones form first in the womb, muscles then appear and surround these bones: ... then formed the drop into a clot and formed the clot into a lump and formed the lump into bones and clothed the bones in flesh; and then brought him into being as another creature. Blessed be Allah, the Best of Creators! (Surat Al-Muminun, 14) Until recently, the bones and muscles were thought to develop together inside the womb. However, advances in the science of embryology, which studies development inside the womb, have revealed that this is incorrect and the description in the Quran is absolutely correct. Microscopic examination also shows that development in the womb takes place exactly in line with the description in verses. Cartilage forms first in the embryo after which this cartilage tissue turns into bone. Subsequently, muscle cells are selected from the tissue around the bones and come together around them. As we have seen, the findings of modern embryology are in complete agreement with the stages of human development revealed in the Quran. Cartilage … Continue reading

Mystery mummy, skeletons found at Madrid college

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2014

MADRID, Nov. 12 (UPI) -- A mummy and two skeletons of unknown origin were found on the roof terrace of a Madrid university building. Complutense University officials confirmed the mummy and two skeletons were found in a room on the roof terrace of the school's faculty building Oct. 29. The vice chancellor's office said the remains were discovered in an old cadaver drying room that hadn't been used in 25 to 30 years. An internal department memo said the facility failed to meet "minimum safety or hygiene standards." "We have been told verbally that the mummified body will be removed by a funeral company as quickly as possible," the memo read. The discovery comes after hundreds of human cadavers were found rotting in the basement of the school's Anatomy and Embryology department in May. 2014 United Press International, Inc. Scientists resolve the evolution of insects

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2014

07.11.2014 - (idw) Stiftung Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig, Leibniz-Institut fr Biodiversitt der Tiere A collaboration of more than 100 researchers from 10 countries announce the results of an unprecedented scientific study that resolves the history of the evolution of insects. The results are published in Science, the worlds leading peer-reviewed research journal, and include answers to many long held questions about the evolutionary history of the worlds largest and most diverse group of organisms. The results, published by scientists from the 1KITE project (1,000 Insect Transcriptome Evolution, http://www.1kite.org), are essential to understanding the millions of living insect species that shape our terrestrial living space and both support and threaten our natural resources. Embargoed: Not for release until 2:00 pm US Eastern time Thursday, 6 November Insects are the most species rich organisms on earth. They are of immense ecological, economic and medical importance and affect our daily lives, from pollinating our crops to vectoring diseases, says Dr. Bernhard Misof, Professor from Research Museum Alexander Koenig - Leibniz Institute for Animal Biodiversity (ZFMK) in Bonn, Germany, one of those who led the research effort. We can only start to understand the enormous species richness and ecological importance of insects with a … Continue reading

Our addiction to criminalising human behaviour makes a mockery of private responsibility

Posted: Published on November 7th, 2014

If poisoning your foetus with alcohol is a crime, why is it not a crime to abort it? If alcoholism in pregnancy is attempted manslaughter, as a QC told the court of appeal this week, surely abortion is murder. Indeed if alcoholism before birth criminally harms a babys life, what about alcoholism and a dozen other cruelties after birth? How many are the misdeeds we inflict on our children to which Britains cult of criminality should now turn its attention? We need a philosopher as Raymond Chandler would say and we need one fast. All we get are bloody lawyers. The motive for this weeks court case in London had nothing to do with the health of mother or child. It was blatantly financial. A local council is acting on behalf of a seven-year-old girl CP who suffers from acute foetal alcohol syndrome. The claimed cause was her mothers drinking during pregnancy. The suit is intended to shift the cost of caring for her from the council to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority on the grounds that the girl is victim of violence against the person. In America hundreds of (mostly black) mothers are now jailed for this offence, to … Continue reading

Younger donors boost fertility treatment rates

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2014

About 10 per cent of the 50,000 cycles of fertility treatment carried out last year used donated eggs, sperm or embryos and new rules were introduced in 2012 to increase the compensation paid to men and women acting as donors. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) said clinics had reported an increase in donations and requests from women wanting to become egg donors since the guidelines were changed to allow them to receive up to 750 per cycle. This means more couples who need donated eggs have the chance to start a family, it said. Overall, the number of egg donors registered with clinics rose from 815 in 2011 to 1,103 last year. However, there was a particular rise in young donors and the proportion of women aged 25 and under offering their eggs doubled to 24 per cent between 2011 and 2013. At the same time, the proportion of young men volunteering as sperm donors, who are paid 35 per clinic visit, increased from 15 per cent to 22 per cent. This was against a backdrop of a slight dip in registered donors from 631 in 2012 to 586 in 2013. Laura Witjens, chief executive of the National … Continue reading

National sperm bank ‘on a mission to change sperm donation’

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2014

With a nationwide donor shortage and increasing demand for sperm, the directors of the new national sperm bank in Birmingham say it will "revolutionise access to donor sperm". Please wait while this video loads. If it doesn't load after a few seconds you may need to have Adobe Flash installed. With some people waiting up to five years for donated sperm, the centre will seek to recruit men in the Birmingham area and distributing their samples nationwide, its director Dr Sue Avery said. "At present some patients needing donor sperm are faced with few safe options and find themselves on waiting lists of up to five years, or having to stop treatment altogether. "Not only is the National Sperm Bank going to revolutionise access to donor sperm in this country, its founders are also on a mission to change the face of sperm donation," said Dr Avery. The centre will also seek to encourage men from ethnic minorities to donate because there is a particular shortfall among their communities. Figures from the Human Fertility and Embryology Authority (HFEA) showed that, between 2009 and 2013, more than 86 per cent of the newly registered donors were white British, white Irish or … Continue reading
