The Lancet: Ovarian tissue and egg freezing should be made widely available to prevent

Posted: Published on October 3rd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 2-Oct-2014 Contact: Dominic Stoop dominicstoop@gmail.com The Lancet @TheLancet Ovarian tissue and egg freezing to preserve fertility should no longer be reserved for cancer patients, and healthy women should also be offered these options to safeguard their future chances of conceiving a child, say world renowned fertility experts writing in a new Series on fertility preservation, published in The Lancet [Paper 3]. Over the past 10 years, researchers have restored the fertility of female cancer patients who would otherwise have been left infertile after treatment, having been offered oocyte cryopreservation. The technique enables women to freeze their eggs and use them at a later time to conceive a child. Several babies have been born to cancer patients using this technique, which is no longer classed as experimental [1]. However, the growing trend in developed countries to delay having children until later in life has resulted in egg freezing being increasingly used by healthy women as insurance against age-related infertility. "So far nearly 2000 babies have been born from eggs frozen, without an increase in the incidence of any birth defects"*, says author Professor Dominic Stoop, Director of the Centre for Reproductive Medicine at UZ Brussels in Belgium. Damaging legacy: Mothers who smoke affect the fertility of their sons

Posted: Published on October 1st, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 30-Sep-2014 Contact: Emma Mason wordmason@mac.com European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology @ESHRE Mothers who smoke while they are pregnant or breast feeding may be damaging the future fertility of their sons, according to new findings from research in mice published online today (Wednesday) in Human Reproduction [1], one of the world's leading reproductive medicine journals. The study is the first comprehensive animal model to show the mechanism by which smoking can affect the fertility of male offspring. It is known already that smoking during pregnancy can have a number of harmful effects on the developing foetus, but, until now, the effects on the fertility of male offspring and the mechanisms involved have been unclear a problem that has been confounded by the lack of animal studies in which the environment and exposure to toxic chemicals can be carefully controlled. Professor Eileen McLaughlin, Co-Director of the Priority Research Center in Chemical Biology at the University of Newcastle (New South Wales, Australia), who led the study, said: "It would be unethical to deliberately expose pregnant mothers and their offspring to the toxins in cigarettes we already know that smoking in pregnancy harms the baby in the womb as … Continue reading

NJ Top Docs Presents, IVF New Jersey!

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2014

Scotch Plains, NJ (PRWEB) September 25, 2014 Leading fertility center, IVF New Jersey, announced its clinical pregnancy rate for the first seven months of 2014, January thru July, for egg donor recipients: a remarkable 93% overall success, or 53 pregnancies in 57 embryo transfers. Two of the biggest concerns for egg recipients are success rates and the time it takes to be matched with an appropriate donor. IVF New Jerseys egg donor program not only is one of the countrys best, but it also boasts one of the shortest wait times for donor matchingan average of 2 monthscompared to many competitors average 10-12 month wait. Cindy Elling Comito, who has served as IVF New Jerseys Embryology Director for 23 years, calls the numbers for January thru July remarkable. Of all fertility treatments, donor eggs offer the highest pregnancy and delivery success. Our rates have been high since we began in 1991, but they are extraordinarily high this year for such a long period of time, Comito said. Egg donor pregnancy rates are a strong indicator of how a practice is performing overall, the quality of the laboratory and abilities of the doctors. IVF New Jersey also recently rolled out an … Continue reading
