RR library hatches new learning idea

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2015

........................................................................................................................................................................................ Peep, peep, peep. Local residents have a chance to learn about chickens, and even hold recently hatched chicks, during an embryology program at Loma Colorado Main Library this month. Galloping Grace Youth Ranch is providing an incubator with seven eggs people can see at the reference desk through April 29, as well as leading three Wednesday family programs to let attendees meet, hold and learn about chickens. A lot of kids dont necessarily know where their food is coming from, said Galloping Grace Ranch Manager Renee Griffith. Loma Colorado Main Library is hosting an incubator like this one as part of a program with Galloping Grace Youth Ranch during which patrons can learn about chickens. (Courtesy of Loma Colorado Main Library) Library Youth Services Manager Deirdre Caparoso said the programming would let people see and learn about chickens in a relaxed, hands-on setting. The collective experience of waiting for and watching the chicks hatch will create a greater sense of community, Caparoso said. The Embryology Program will help identify Rio Rancho Public Libraries as beneficial community centers offering enriching and innovative programs. Experiencing new life in the library will bring sheer delight to the library, its customers and Rio … Continue reading

Two UNCW student organizations bring controversial display to campus

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2015

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Ratio Christi and the College Republicans at UNC Wilmington are bringing a controversial display to be featured on campus April 8 and 9. The two student organizations invited the Genocide Awareness Project, a project of the Center for Bio-Ethical Reform, which is an exhibit that juxtaposes images of aborted embryos and fetuses with images of victims of historical and contemporary genocides and other injustices, according to AbortionNo.org(WARNING: Website contains graphic images that may be disturbing). The display has been shown more than 200 times at nearly 75 universities across the across the nation, and is known for its graphic imagery. According to a news release, the student organizations invited GAP to UNCW's campus to help show their fellow students what abortion actually does. Unless you take a course in human embryology, students may never know how well developed unborn babies are when abortions are performed," said Madison Marston, president of Ratio Christi at UNCW. "The unborn are more than clumps of tissues and these images clearly prove it. In the release, the student organizations say the graphic images are necessary, "because one must be allowed to see all of the facts before making an educated decision … Continue reading

Study finds one of the most accurate ways of determining chances of IVF success

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2015

Accurately predicting the probability of a live birth after in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment is important for both those undergoing the treatment and their clinicians. Findings from a comparison study that analysed the accuracy of the two most widely-used prediction models are published today [08 April] in the journal PLOS ONE. Researchers at the universities of Bristol and Glasgow compared how well the Templeton method and IVFpredict -- two personalised prediction tools that help couples calculate their chance of a successful birth with IVF treatment - worked in 130, 960 IVF cycles. The team, led by Professor Debbie Lawlor at Bristol and Professor Scott Nelson at Glasgow, used statistical methods to analyse data, held by the UK Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, to assess which of the two tools was more accurate at predicting live birth rates. Although both tools are based on patient and couple measurements and characteristics and history of infertility, the Templeton model was developed using data from couples who received IVF two decades ago. This was at a time when success rates were considerably lower than currently and before the introduction of intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), which has transformed the use of IVF in couples where … Continue reading

IVF clinic blunders: 7 mums had their embryos lost or destroyed

Posted: Published on April 6th, 2015

Frozen embryos belonging to hopeful IVF mothers were destroyed or lost in a series of blunders, a fertility clinics' regulator has admitted. Centres have to operate under strict rules so embryos belonging to hopeful parents are not disposed off without proper permission. But new data revealed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) has lifted the lid on clinic blunders which have occurred in the last five years. If embryos are accidentally destroyed it can condemn would-be parents to having no chance at all of having their natural children. In one instance in 2011 Alison Austen-Hennessy was told her frozen embryos, which were being stored at a hospital in Kent, had been thawed but nobody could trace where they had gone. Alison, of Ramsgate, Kent, said the clinic held an inquiry but could not trace what had happened to her embryos, meaning it couldnt be ruled out that they had been accidentally implanted into another woman. In another example, precious embryos were erroneously thawed after a breakdown in communication at the clinic. Hopeful couple Zeb and Hadia Urfan found their frozen embryos were accidentally destroyed after an admin blunder saw staff remove the embryos from the deep freeze at … Continue reading
