Impotence or erectile dysfunction is not an uncommon phenomenon. Globally, men experience the condition for different reasons. Some may seek treatment while others may suffer embarrassment and not get the care they need to improve the quality of their sexual experience. Impotence may have a physical, medicational, or psychological basis. Researchers strive to find a cure for impotence. There are varied treatments available depending on the cause of impotence, however some do not offer a cure for the underlying cause and others treat impotence symptoms. Erectile dysfunction is diagnosed through discussion, physical examination, blood and laboratory tests, ultrasound and neurological testing. Disease, injury, and stress may affect erections and ability to have orgasm. Treatments for physical causes of impotence include medications, hormone therapy, vacuum pumps, surgery and Kegel exercises. Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction may be treated through exercise, counselling, talk therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Low intensity shockwave therapy A new innovation in impotence treatment is electric shock therapy. The therapy is developed by Israeli scientists from Haifa Rambam Medical Centre and is now available at Spire Murrayfield Hospital in Edinburgh, Scotland. Considered safe, non-invasive and pain-free, the electric shock therapy works by stimulating blood flow to the … Continue reading

Sex & Prostate Cancer: Why Men May Feel a Loss of Manhood

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

Men with prostate cancer often experience erectile dysfunction as a side effect of their treatment, and many find this to be upsetting to the point where it undermines their wellbeing. Moreover, men's distress about ED often does not improve over time in some men, it worsens. A new study sheds light on the causes of this prolonged distress. While some researchers have thought that the severity of a man's ED is linked with how distressed he feels, the new findings show that regardless of men's ED severity, they are much more likely to be distressed when they feel they've lost their masculinity as a result of treatment. Not all men experience this feeling of lost masculinity, said study researcher Talia Zaider, a clinical psychologist at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. But those who do are most at risk of feeling deeply troubled, embarrassed or ashamed about their ED. A feeling of lost masculinity is an aspect of prostate cancer treatment that's not often talked about, Zaider said. "Gender norms work against men," and can keep them from discussing it, she said. In the study, about one-third of men who had been treated for prostate cancer in the … Continue reading

Recto’s equilibrium and erectile dysfunction

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

By Ellen Tordesillas Studies have shown that the ill-effects of smoking coupled with poor diet and lack of exercise are not limited to cardiovascular, respiratory disease, diabetes and cancer, which are afflicting Filipinos at their most productive age, 40's and early 50's. In one of the lectures, Dr. Anthony Leachon, cardiologist and consultant on non-communicable diseases of the Department of Health, said recent studies have shown that smoking causes erectile dysfunction. "You may not die of erectile dysfunction but some men die for it,"quipped Leachon, who is leading the campaign for the passage of the Sin Tax, not the Recto-fied version but the one that the authored by Sen. Miriam Santiago. He also supports the version passed by the House of Representatives authored by then Cavite Representative (now Secretary of Transportation and Communication) Joseph Abaya. Would Senator Ralph Recto, chairman of the Senate Committee on Ways and Means, and his pro-tobacco colleagues want a nation of men afflicted with erectile dysfunction? Unless they are in cahoots with manufacturers of Viagra, I don't think Recto has really considered the health aspects of the Sin Tax bill. Recto justified his junking of the Santiago bill which would have given the government additional … Continue reading

FDA cracks down on websites selling bad drugs

Posted: Published on October 5th, 2012

(Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it has cracked down on thousands of online pharmacies for selling potentially unsafe, unapproved or fake medicines, including the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra and antiviral Tamiflu. The FDA, working with international regulatory and law enforcement agencies from about 100 countries, said on Thursday that it took action against more than 4,100 Internet pharmacies, bringing civil and criminal charges, removing offending websites and seizing drugs worldwide. The move was part of the fifth annual International Internet Week of Action, a global effort to fight the online sale and distribution of potentially counterfeit and illegal medicine. Action taken between September 25 and October 2 resulted in the shutdown of more than 18,000 illegal pharmacy websites and the seizure of 3.7 million doses of counterfeit medicines worth an estimated $10.5 million, the agency said. Homeland Security Investigations, which took part in the coordinated effort titled Pangea, said preliminary results show the actions also accounted for 79 arrests. "Consumers in the United States and around the world face a real threat from Internet pharmacies that illegally sell potentially substandard, counterfeit, adulterated or otherwise unsafe medicines," FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg said in a statement. "This week's … Continue reading

Male Impotence Specialist Advanced Male Medical Center Offers Tips on Sexual Activity and Diabetes

Posted: Published on October 4th, 2012

San Francisco's Advanced Male Medical Center is offering tips on potential erectile dysfunction treatments for diabetic males. San Francisco, CA (PRWEB) October 04, 2012 What is the relationship between sex and diabetes? Is there any reason for a diabetic man to reduce his level of sexual activity? Larry Stephens of Advanced Male Medical Center said. There is no reason for a man with diabetes to reduce his level of sexual activity. However, there are complications of diabetes that may hinder a man's ability to have and sustain an erection. If a man has damage to the small blood vessels or the nerves involved in achieving an erection, the flow of blood into the penis may be impaired, preventing him from achieving or sustaining an erection. Advanced Male Medical Center recommends the following: 1)Diabetics who are experiencing any sexual dysfunction should discuss it with their doctor, who can evaluate testosterone levels, medications and blood sugar control. 2)The erectile dysfunction may be a side effect of some blood pressure medications. 3)Quit smoking. Smoking cigarettes may have an impact on the blood vessels. 4)Consider treatments such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis and other medications that may be used to treat erectile dysfunction. "There … Continue reading

Predicting erectile dysfunction from prostate cancer treatment

Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

Public release date: 27-Sep-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Michelle Kirkwood michellek@astro.org 703-286-1600 American Society for Radiation Oncology Researchers have identified 12 DNA sequences that may help doctors determine which men will suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) following radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Identifying these patients in advance of treatment may better inform men and their families as to which prostate cancer treatments are best for their specific cancer and lifestyle, according to a study to be published online September 27, 2012, in advance of the October 1, 2012 print issue, in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology.Biology.Physics (Red Journal), the official scientific journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO). The findings could also guide doctors in recommending the most effective treatments that carry the least risk of patients developing ED. The main treatments for prostate cancersurgery, brachytherapy (seed implants) and external beam radiation therapyare all very effective at curing prostate cancer. Unfortunately, each treatment places patients at risk for ED. Although many men will maintain their potency, doctors would like to identify which men are at greatest risk for the development of difficulty with sexual function. In this multi-institutional, multi-national study, researchers from New York's … Continue reading
