Posted: Published on September 27th, 2012

Newswise In the first study of its kind, a research team led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University discovered 12 genetic markers associated with the development of erectile dysfunction (ED) in prostate cancer patients who were treated with radiation. The findings, to be published online September 27, 2012, in advance of the October 1, 2012 print issue in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology Biology Physics, the official scientific journal of the American Society for Radiation Oncology, are an important step towards helping clinicians determine the best course of treatment for prostate cancer patients and may lead to the development of therapies that alleviate side effects. The main treatments for prostate cancer surgery, brachytherapy (seed implants) and external beam radiation therapy are all very effective at curing prostate cancer. Unfortunately, each treatment places patients at risk for ED. According to the National Cancer Institute, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction following external beam radiation for prostate cancer ranges from 65 percent to 85 percent. The Prostate Cancer Foundation estimates prevalence of ED following seed therapy at 25 to 50 percent. Many men will be able to regain their potency with time and … Continue reading

CHMP in Favor of Lilly's Cialis

Posted: Published on September 26th, 2012

Eli Lilly and Companys (LLY) Cialis (tadalafil) recently received a positive opinion from the Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) of the European Medicines Agency (:EMA). The CHMP issued an opinion in favor of approving Eli Lillys erectile dysfunction (ED) drug, Cialis (5 mg), for the once-daily treatment of the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (:BPH). A response from the European Commission regarding Cialis regulatory status should be out in two months. The CHMPs opinion was based on a review of safety and efficacy data on 1,500 patients from four clinical studies of BPH, including a study of BPH and ED. Cialis label expansion would provide patients suffering from both ED and BPH with a new treatment option. Approval for the additional indication will help boost Cialis sales, which came in at $1.9 billion in 2011. Cialis, which is approved for the treatment of ED in the EU, is approved for the treatment of ED as well as the treatment of BPH in the US. Cialis main competitors in the ED market include Pfizers (PFE) Viagra and GlaxoSmithKlines (GSK) Levitra. The BPH market is also pretty crowded with products like Glaxo's Avodart and Jalyn, Sanofis (SNY) … Continue reading

Disease, injury, and stress may affect erections and ability to have orgasm. Treatments for physical causes of impotence include medications, hormone therapy, vacuum pumps, surgery and Kegel exercises. Psychological causes of erectile dysfunction may be treated through exercise, counselling, talk therapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Low intensity shockwave therapy A new innovation in impotence treatment is electric shock therapy. Cardiovascular Risk Evaluation for All Men Should Include Assessment of Sexual Function

Posted: Published on August 30th, 2012

Report on Princeton III Meeting on Cardiometabolic Risks and Sexual Health Newswise (CHICAGO)-- Assessment of sexual function should be incorporated into cardiovascular risk evaluation for all men, regardless of the presence or absence of known cardiovascular disease, according to Dr. Ajay Nehra, lead author of a report by the Princeton Consensus (Expert Panel) Conference, a collaboration of 22 international, multispecialty researchers. Nehra is vice chairperson, professor and director of Mens Health in the Department of Urology at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a red flag in younger men, less than 55 years of age for future cardiac morbidity or mortality death or disease for cardiovascular disease (CVD). In some patients, the time window between onset of ED and a cardiovascular event may be two to five years. Any man with ED should be considered at a substantially higher increase cardiovascular risk until further testing can be done, said Nehra. Erectile dysfunction often occurs in the presence of silent, non-symptomatic cardiovascular disease; and hence this is an opportunity for cardiovascular risk reduction. The panel recommends that younger men, more than 30 years old who experience ED receive a thorough, non invasive cardiovascular disease evaluation. As the … Continue reading

Spider venom could cure erectile dysfunction

Posted: Published on August 30th, 2012

Published: 2:55PM Thursday August 30, 2012 Source: Newstalk ZB/ONE News The Phoneutria, commonly known as the Brazilian Wandering Spider, is the world's most venomous spider. - Source: Supplied. Venom from the world's deadliest spider could cure erectile dysfunction within 20 minutes. Scientists have discovered the Brazilian Wandering Spider's venom boosts performance by increasing the release of nitric oxide, a chemical that dilates blood vessels and improves blood flow. Brazilian scientists first became interested in the deadly spider's ability to boost sexual performance when victims of bites reported major improvements in their sex lives. Researchers from Brazil and the United States extracted the toxin, called PnTx2-6, from the deadly venom and injected it into rats which had age-related erectile dysfunction, Britain's Daily Mail reports. The researchers found the toxin boosted erections by triggering the release of nitric oxide, which boosts circulation in the male genitals by helping blood vessel walls relax. In a report on their findings, published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, the researchers said: "The decrease in erectile function associated with age was partially restored 15 to 20 minutes after injection with PnTx2-6." Drugs such as Viagra and Cialis have revolutionised treatment in the last 10 years but … Continue reading

Deadly spider venom could treat ED, study says

Posted: Published on August 29th, 2012

A study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine highlights how a deadly spider venom could purportedly treat erectile dysfunction, Medical Daily reported. The Brazilian Wandering Spider, whose deadly bite can kill people within an hour, has venom properties that are of interest to sufferers of ED, according to the studys researchers. Some people who have experienced the spiders bite and lived to talk about it, described a boost in erectile function. Researchers extracted the toxin, which is called PnTx2-6 and injected it into elderly rats. "Nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity in aged and young cavernosal tissue was increased by incubation with PnTx2-6," wrote Kenia P. Nunes and her colleagues. PnTx2-6 improved genital relaxation therefore improving blood flow in the elderly rats because of increased NOS activity and NO release. Researchers said the effect could be seen in as little as 15 to 20 minutes. Click here for more from Medical Daily. Click here for more from The Journal of Sexual Medicine.
