August 9, 2012 [ Watch the Video: Propecia May Harm Sex Drive ] Connie K. Ho for redOrbit.com Your Universe Online Research recently showed a connection between Propecia and the loss of sexual libido, erectile dysfunction, depression and thoughts of suicide. The effects from Propecia, previously known as finasteride, seemed to have stopped after discontinuation of the medication. However, a small percentage of males are thought to have long-lasting sexual side effects from the drug. According to NBC News, 64 percent of the men in the study stated that they had long-term sexual side effects due to the drug. They also described symptoms of depression, with 40 percent noting that they had suicidal thoughts. The findings were published recently in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. The potential life-threatening side-effects associated with finasteride should prompt clinicians to have serious discussions with their patients, Dr. Michael Irwig of George Washington University told NBC News. In the project, the investigators interviewed 61 young men. The average age of the males was 25 and all had used Propecia. All the participants had reported sexual side effects three months or more after discontinuing the medication. Before taking the medication, they had not had any sexual … Continue reading

If the defendant was advanced in age and had symptoms of erectile dysfunction, a conviction shall not be made unless supported by direct evidence. The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a lower court`s verdict of not guilty given to a 71-year-old man on the charge of sexual assault of a youth. The ruling cleared the man of the allegation that he violated the Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes and the Protection of Victims and the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse. With the latest judgment, he was cleared of the charge of sexually molesting and repeatedly assaulting a 9-year-old girl until she turned 15. The story that prosecutors had was that in 2004, a 9-year-old girl, who is now 17, enjoyed a good friendship with the owner of an orchard where her parents started working from 1996. Her father was physically disabled while her mother had mental disabilities. The owner treated the girl nicely to get closer to her. As she grew older, he supposedly sexually attacked her. From 2009, when she was 15, to 2010, he allegedly raped her three times. A prosecutor said, Since the defendant took advantage of the disabilities … Continue reading

Kidney removal, erectile dysfunction link

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2012

SAN DIEGO, July 31 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers identified a link between patients who undergo complete kidney removal and erectile dysfunction. The study involved 432 patients who underwent surgery for renal (kidney) cell carcinoma. Senior author Dr. Ithaar Derweesh -- associate professor of surgery, University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and urologic surgeon at University of California, San Diego Health System -- and colleagues said one group underwent complete removal of the kidney while the other had kidney-sparing surgery. Sexual function was assessed pre- and post-operatively with a sexual health questionnaire known as the International Index of Erectile Function. The study, published online in the British Journal of Urology International, found a dramatic yet delayed effect. Patients who had a total kidney removal were 3.5 times more likely to develop erectile dysfunction approximately six years after surgery, compared to those who had kidney reconstruction. "This is the first study in medical literature to suggest that surgery for kidney removal can negatively impact erectile function while partial kidney removal can protect sexual function," Derweesh said in a statement. Removing kidney increases risk of erectile dysfunction

Removal of a kidney can greatly increase the risk of erectile dysfunction. (National Library of Medicine / National Institutes of Health) July 31, 2012, 11:43 a.m. Total removal of a kidney during cancer treatment increases the risk of developing erectile dysfunction nearly four-fold compared with patients who have only a partial removal, researchers reported Tuesday. In light of other research, which shows that partial removal (known as partial nephrectomy) is at least as effective and probably more effective than complete removal (radical nephrectomy), it now seems reasonable that radical nephrectomy should be reserved as a last resort. Dr. Ithaar Derweesh, a urologic surgeon at the UC San Diego Health System, and his colleagues studied 264 patients who underwent a radical nephrectomy and 168 who underwent a partial nephrectomy at either the UC San Diego Medical Center or the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis between January 1988 and December 2007. The team assessed the patients' sexual health and activity before the surgery and at least six months afterward. The researchers reported in the British Journal of Urology International that the patients who had radical nephrectomies had larger tumors and were more likely to have erectile dysfunction before cancer … Continue reading

Erectile dysfunction a red flag for heart

Posted: Published on July 29th, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I., July 29 (UPI) -- Many think erectile dysfunction is a sign of aging, but U.S. researchers say screening should include younger and middle-age men. An article, published in the American Heart Journal, encouraged physicians to inquire about erectile dysfunction symptoms in men age 30 and older, who have cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking, obesity or family history, as well as all men with type 2 diabetes. Dr. Martin Miner, chief of family medicine and co-director of the Men's Health Center at The Miriam Hospital in Providence, R.I., said as many as 30 million U.S. men suffer from erectile dysfunction, or the inability to maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Erectile dysfunction and cardiovascular disease share a common cause: narrowing of the arteries -- resulting in reduced or obstructed blood flow to the organs -- caused by common risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure. Penile arteries are just a fraction smaller than the arteries supplying blood to the heart, so arteriosclerosis is likely to present first in the form of erection problems. "Erectile dysfunction represents an important first step toward heart disease detection and reduction, yet many healthcare providers and patients assume … Continue reading

Can Recreational ED Drug Use Lead to ED?

Posted: Published on July 21st, 2012

Recreational Erectile Dysfunction Drug Use in Young Men May Lead to ED, Study Says July 20, 2012 -- Men who use erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs recreationally may be more likely to develop psychogenic ED, the type that originates in the mind, according to new research. "Recreational use of ED medications increased the chance of psychological dependence on ED medicines,'' says researcher Christopher Harte, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow at the VA Boston Healthcare System. "Among young, healthy men who used ED medicines recreationally, the more frequent ED medicine use was associated with lower confidence in achieving and maintaining erections, which in turn was associated with lower erectile function," Harte says. The study is published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine. The researchers found a link but not cause and effect, Harte tells WebMD. However, another expert wonders if some of the men who reported ''recreational'' use actually had ED. ED affects about 34 million men in the U.S., according to Harte. The condition is more common with age. About 9% of men 18 to 39 are affected. Up to 70% of men 60 and older are. However, men aged 18 to 45 are responsible for the largest increase in the use … Continue reading

Doubt over the worth of prostate surgery

Posted: Published on July 20th, 2012

"The whole problem is selecting the ones which need to be operated on" ... Cancer Council chief executive Ian Olver. Photo: Natalie Boog A LANDMARK study of prostate cancer surgery has found it does not appear to save the lives of men with early-stage disease and causes high rates of incontinence and erectile dysfunction. In what has been described by experts as ''game changing'' research, American researchers tracked the progress of 731 men with prostate cancer over 12 years to see how surgical removal of the prostate compared with continuing observation of the cancer to see if it becomes more active or spreads. The largest clinical trial comparing the two approaches to date found surgery did not significantly change the survival rate between the groups. After 10 years, 21 men or 5.8 per cent of those who received surgery had died from prostate cancer or its treatment, compared to 31 or 8.4 per cent of those whose doctors watched their progress. However, in the surgery group, one in five men suffered a complication from the surgery called a radical prostatectomy. Two years on from the procedure, one man had died from it, 81 per cent suffered erectile dysfunction, 17 per … Continue reading
