Photo: Gabriele Charotte A LANDMARK study of prostate cancer surgery has found it does not appear to save the lives of men with low-risk disease and causes high rates of incontinence and erectile dysfunction. In what has been described by experts as a ''game changing'' finding, American researchers tracked the progress of 731 men with prostate cancer over 12 years to see how surgical removal of the prostate compared with ongoing observation of the cancer to see if it became more active or spread. The largest clinical trial comparing the two approaches to date found surgery did not significantly change the survival rate between the groups. After a decade, 21 men or 5.8 per cent of those who received surgery had died from prostate cancer or its treatment compared with 31 or 8.4 per cent of those whose doctors watched their progress. The researchers said the difference could have been due to chance and not significant enough for surgery to be advised. A Canoga Park man charged with selling fake erectile dysfunction pills on Craigslist was sentenced to a year and a day in federal prison, authorities said Tuesday. The case against Barry Ronnel Johnson, 38, began in March 2011 after customs officers at Los Angeles International Airport intercepted a package with more than 1,700 counterfeit pills. The shipment was bound for Johnson's home, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Johnson was charged with selling 30 blue labeled "Filagra" to a Homeland Security undercover agent posing as a buyer on Craigslist. Johnson pleaded guilty in March to one count of trafficking and importing counterfeit goods. He was also ordered to serve a year of home detention after his release from prison. "This sentence should serve as a stern warning for those selling counterfeit pharmaceuticals over the Internet," said Claude Arnold, special agent in charge of Homeland Security investigations in Los Angeles. A Canoga Park man who pleaded guilty to peddling counterfeit erectile dysfunction drugs has been sentenced to a year in prison and another year in home detention, federal authorities said Tuesday. Barry Ronnel Johnson, 38, was sent to prison Monday by U.S. District Judge Christina A. Snyder, who also ordered home detention upon his release. Johnson pleaded guilty in March to using Craigslist to peddle fake erectile dysfunction drugs from India and China after a probe by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement. "This sentence should serve as a stern warning for those selling counterfeit pharmaceuticals over the Internet," said Claude Arnold of the agency's Homeland Security Investigations, in a statement. "Imposter drugs like these pose a serious threat to buyers who mistakenly assume (they're) safe." In March 2011, federal agents at Los Angeles International Airport intercepted a package containing 1,700 counterfeit erectile dysfunction pills posted to Johnson's Canoga Park home. On an episode of TLC's reality show "Strange Sex," the network followed a 34-year-old man who breastfeeds from his wife to help with his erectile dysfunction. Jeff and Michelle, who understandably did not want their last names revealed, say they began integrating breastfeeding into their sexual routine a few months after their first child was born. These are common performance anxiety thoughts, but they can cause men to lose their erections immediately. This, in turn, exacerbates their anxiety and leads to troublesome feelings of sadness, disappointment, guilt and shame. The more this happens, the more these men lose their confidence. They may start avoiding sex or become so traumatised they stop having sex all together. This cycle often continues until it is addressed. A NEW procedure gives hope to men suffering from erectile dysfunction. It employs the stent, or an artificial tube similar to those used in heart arteries, which can be used in the internal pudendal artery, opening the vessel and allowing better blood flow to the penis. Relatively unknown around the world and still in the research phase, the new procedure is described as a viable option to treat ED. University Malaya Medical Centre consultant cardiologist and internal physician Dr Ramesh Singh Veriah says that should doctors be able to use angioplasty to treat ED, it would be a major breakthrough. He says so far there have been two trials with the method Zen trial and Impassed trial that found benefits and also, differences and hindrances.
