Cancer Group Discusses Link Between Prostate Cancer And Erectile Dysfunction
Posted: Published on March 18th, 2013
March 17, 2013 redOrbit Staff & Wire Reports Your Universe Online Men suffering from prostate cancer are four times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction (ED) than those without the condition a phenomenon caused largely by the treatment process, according to the UK-based Macmillan Cancer Support charity. According to the Belfast Telegraph, the organization said there are currently about 160,000 men being treated for prostate cancer in the UK who are suffering from ED. As they went through surgery, radiotherapy and hormone treatments, it became difficult or even impossible for those men to maintain erections. In some there may be permanent nerve damage, meaning they cannot maintain an erection. In others the physical problem can be temporary while for some the treatment has led to a psychological barrier to sex, BBC News added. Macmillan Cancer Support officials said two out of every three prostate cancer patients report an inability to get an erection as a result of their therapy. These figures highlight a major issue facing prostate cancer patients after treatment, explained Professor Jane Maher, chief medical officer of the UK cancer charity. The sheer volume of men affected shows the need for careful discussions before treatment. Many can be … Continue reading

Stem cells transplantation technique has high potential as a novel therapeutic strategy for erectile dysfunction
Posted: Published on March 18th, 2013
Mar. 15, 2013 Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells cultivated on the surface of nanofibrous meshes could be a novel therapeutic strategy against post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction (ED), conclude the authors of a study which is to be presented at the 28th Annual EAU Congress later this week. The study was conducted by a group of Korean scientists and will be awarded 3rd prize for best abstract in non-oncology research on the opening day of the congress. During their investigation, the group aimed to examine the differentiation of human mesenchymal stem cells cultivated on the surface of nanofibrous meshes (nano-hMSCs) into neuron-like cells and repair of erectile dysfunction using their transplantation around the injured cavernous nerve (CN) of rats. "The objectives of the study reflect a very pertinent need in today's urology practice," said the lead author of the investigation Prof. Y.S. Song of Soonchunhyang University School of Medicine in South Korea. "Post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction results from injury to the cavernous nerve that provides the autonomic input to erectile tissue. It is a common complication after radical prostatectomy which decreases the patient's quality of life." "Although advances in equipment and surgical techniques reduce this complication, patients still experience erectile dysfunction after radical … Continue reading

Four men, including one from York County, indicted on charges involving erectile dysfunction drugs
Posted: Published on March 16th, 2013
Officials said the unlawful profits from the misbranded drugs were made through a York County business. York, PA - Four men, including one from York County, were indicted Thursday with allegedly being involved in a scam to distribute misbranded erectile dysfunction drugs through a York County business and concealing the profits, according to the United States Attorney's Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Almuntasser "Alex" Hbaiu, 34, of Los Angeles was previously charged with criminal conspiracy, delivery of misbranded drugs, receipt of misbranded drugs and two counts of wire fraud. A grand jury returned a second superseding indictment on March 8 that charged Hbaiu with additional offenses of structuring financial transactions and bank fraud. The new indictment also charged three additional people. Ahed Hbaiu, 32, of Etters is charged with criminal conspiracy, delivery of misbranded Gil Conrad Dizon, 24, of Los Angeles and Christopher Mouzon, 27, also of Los Angeles, are facing charges, as well. The superseding indictment charges that the four men were involved with various companies that sold drugs including Mojo Nights, Libigrow and Blue Diamond -- all marketed as all-natural versions of sexual enhancement drugs, the release states. The drugs contained sildenafil and citrate, active ingredients … Continue reading

Stem cells transplantation technique could help repair erectile dysfunction

Washington, Mar 16 (ANI): Transplantation of mesenchymal stem cells cultivated on the surface of nanofibrous meshes could be a novel therapeutic strategy against post-prostatectomy erectile dysfunction (ED), researchers have claimed. Chad Hall: Erectile Dysfunction
Posted: Published on March 14th, 2013
Years before Eric Victorino started the Limousines, he and friend Chad Hall talked about writing a poetry book together. This project never materialized, though Victorino would eventually release two books of poetry, Coma Therapy and Trading Sunshine for Shadows, through his and wife Sarah Collins' imprint, Orchard City Books and Noise. Recently, when Hall was finally ready to release his own poetry book, Erectile Dysfunction, naturally Victorino and Collins wanted to release it on Orchard City as well. "What I strive for in my work above all else is honesty, even if it paints me in a bad light," Victorino explains. "Chad's writing comes from a similar place. He's not scared to face his failings and to share them." Hall doesn't just share his failings, he shines a bright light on them and exposes their every detaila process that can be uncomfortable. Hall talks about heartbreak, loneliness, getting drunk, pushing people away and, of course, erectile dysfunction. "It's the ultimate male vulnerability. It's a common thing, yet we're all so embarrassed by it," Hall says. The concept is a perfect platform for Hall as he devotes much of the book dealing with his conflicting ideas and feelings about his own … Continue reading

Common Erectile Dysfunction Drug Not Helpful for Heart Failure Patients, Study Finds
Posted: Published on March 13th, 2013
Monday, March 11, 2013 SAN FRANCISCO A commonly used erectile dysfunction drug, sildenafil, doesn't help patients who have heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, a condition in which the heart's lower chambers are stiff and cannot relax and fill fully between beats. That is the finding of the RELAX study, presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 62nd Annual Scientific Session and simultaneously published in The Journal of the American Medical Association. The study's lead author called the results disappointing. VIDEO ALERT: Audio and video resources are available on the Mayo Clinic News Network. Sildenafil, a phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor, had shown encouraging results in smaller studies and in animal models. In this study, researchers looked at the drug's effect on maximum exercise ability as assessed by peak oxygen consumption and on how far people could walk in six minutes, their clinical status and their heart structure and function. They found no benefit, says lead author Margaret Redfield, M.D., heart failure specialist and researcher at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. "It was surprising and a disappointment, and it was contradictory to our hypothesis," says Dr. Redfield. "There are few options for help for these patients, and we hoped we would find … Continue reading

Erectile dysfunction drug fails for diastolic heart failure patients
Posted: Published on March 13th, 2013
Public release date: 11-Mar-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Beth Casteel bcasteel@acc.org 240-328-4549 American College of Cardiology SAN FRANCISCO (March 11, 2013) Despite high expectations for a commonly used erectile dysfunction drug to treat patients with diastolic heart failure, no beneficial effects were found in a study presented today at the American College of Cardiology's 62nd Annual Scientific Session. The RELAX Study is the first multicenter trial to look at the effect of chronic therapy with sildenafil in diastolic heart failure. Sildenafil is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor, a class of drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction and certain types of pulmonary arterial hypertension. Positive results with sildenafil in smaller studies and animal models provided the impetus for the study. But, compared to the placebo, researchers found no beneficial effect of the drug on the primary endpoint of participants' maximum exercise capacity assessed by peak oxygen consumption nor on secondary endpoints of submaximal exercise capacity (as tested by how far patients could walk in six minutes), clinical status, or cardiovascular structure and function. "The results of our study were surprising and disappointing," said Margaret Redfield, MD, professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and the study's … Continue reading
