Femtomedicine Process Kills Cancer Cells, Protects Healthy …
Posted: Published on June 10th, 2015
Professor Qing-Bin Lu, from the University of Waterloos Faculty of Science, initiated a novel molecular-mechanism-based program to discover a new class of non-platinum-based-halogenated molecules that kill cancer cells, yet prevent healthy cells from being damaged. The most effective cancer drugs today may kill cancer cells, but they also kill healthy cells, causing severe side effects for patients in the process. Femtosecond time-resolved laser spectroscopy is a technique traditionally applied to study chemical reactions as they occur on a molecular level. The laser takes a series of rapid snapshots of molecules as they interact and change structure over time. The technique is part of a potential new field of science developed by Professor Lu called femtomedicine (FMD), which integrats the ultrafast laser with molecular biology and cell biology. Professor Lu has applied the tool to understand the molecular mechanisms that cause cancer at the very moment when the DNA becomes damaged. He has also used it to investigate how radiation therapy and chemotherapy using chemical agents, in particular the widely used platinum chemotherapeutic Cisplatin, work in treating a variety of cancers. We know DNA damage is the initial step, said Professor Lu. With the novel femtomedicine approach we can go back … Continue reading

Frontiers | The antioxidants dilemma: are they potentially …
Posted: Published on February 8th, 2015
Introduction Antioxidants and a large number of natural supplements were introduced in recent decades (Lu et al., 2013). It has been hypothesized that antioxidant consumption might reverse oxidative stress which decreases the adverse effects elicited as outcomes of oxidative stress including inflammation, carcinogenesis, and atherosclerosis (Ghorbanihaghjo et al., 2012; Bjelakovic et al., 2014). A large number of studies have been conducted in order to convey evidence for beneficial effects of antioxidants in health and disease (Bjelakovic et al., 2012). However, most of these studies were conducted for a short time interval evaluating limited numbers of targeted biochemical markers both in animal and human studies. Only a small number of prolonged cohort studies have been performed to critically assess the effects of chronic consumption of antioxidants. Unexpectedly, in a recently published systematic review by Bjelakovic et al. on 78 randomized clinical trials on antioxidants supplementation including selenium, -carotene, vitamin C, vitamin A, and vitamin E, not only have no favorable effects been observed, but additionally, mortality rates have risen (Bjelakovic and Gluud, 2007; Bjelakovic et al., 2012). Surprisingly, it has been shown that antioxidant supplementation may increase the risk of skin malignancy in women (Hercberg et al., 2007). There are also … Continue reading

Emergence of Femtomedicine – New Frontier of Biomed …
Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2014
2/9/2010 7:02:18 PM Emergence of Femtomedicine - New Frontier of Biomed Sciences - Reported at First Global Congress on Nano Medicine Bombarding DNA nucleotides and mammalian meat with femto-neutrons has opened up the path to femtomedicine, an entirely new cancer diagnostics, it was reported today at First Global Congress on NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology in Houston, TX. Femto-neutrons or femtons are fast neutrons of femtometer wavelength, a million times shorter than the current nanotechnology diagnostic probes which operate on nanometer scale. In the first experiment of the kind, a collaboration of California Science & Engineering Corp. (CALSEC) and College of Medicine, University of California, Irvine (UCI), claimed that is was able to detect oxygen differences as tiny as 1 atom of oxygen per molecule. Since hypoxic cancerous tumors contain 50% to 90% less oxygen than healthy tissue, if you find an oxygen difference between a tumor and the adjacent normal tissue you have diagnosed cancer! The principle is named Differential Femto Oximetry and the patented diagnostic probe Oncosensor. We are ready and eager to test this interesting approach in vivo by making animals inhale carbogen, an oxygen-enriched harmless gas, said co-author Orhan Nalcioglu, Professor and Director of the Center … Continue reading

Femtomedicine the new frontier of biomedical sciences
Posted: Published on April 14th, 2014
15 February 2010 Femto-neutrons or femtons are fast neutrons of femtometer wavelength, a million times shorter than the dimensions of current nanotechnology diagnostic probes that operate at the nanometer scale. They can be used for a completely new method of cancer diagnostics, it was reported at the First Global Congress on NanoEngineering for Medicine and Biology in Houston last week. In the first experiment of its kind, a collaboration of California Science & Engineering Corp. (CALSEC) and College of Medicine, University of California, Irvine (UCI), reported on a system using femtons that detects chemical elements by interacting with the nucleus only and is unaffected by chemical bonds. The technology was developed for the defence sector to remotely detect explosives, bioagents and drugs instantly (in 20 sec 10 min). The cancer diagnostic principal is based on the long-known fact that cancerous tumours contain 50% to 90% less oxygen than healthy tissue due to accelerated growth and faster consumption of oxygen than can be supplied by the blood, called hypoxia. German Otto Warburg won a Nobel Prize in 1931 for the discovery. This means that if you can determ there is an oxygen concentration difference between a tumour and the adjacent normal … Continue reading
