‘Heart-in-a-dish’ to study the effects of coronavirus – Cambridge Network
Posted: Published on June 21st, 2020
British Heart Foundation (BHF)-funded researchers are using stem cell heart-in-a-dish technology - originally created to explore potential treatments for heart failure - to help understand how and why coronavirus (Covid-19) impacts the heart. Dr Sanjay Sinha and his team at University of Cambridge will use their expertise in growing 2D and 3D heart tissue in the laboratory from human stem cells, to study how the coronavirus attaches to heart muscle cells and how it affects their ability to contract and relax Continue reading

‘Tai chi-ing’ away depression caused by heart disease – The Star Online
Posted: Published on June 16th, 2020
Heart disease patients might be able to relieve symptoms of depression with sessions of tai chi, according to new American research. Carried out by researchers at the University of Arizona, the new study analysed the findings of 15 clinical trials that included a total of 1,853 patients, to investigate the effect of tai chi on psychological well-being in adults with coronary heart disease, heart failure, hypertension (high blood pressure) and stroke. Heart attacks are mostly caused by coronary heart disease (CHD), a condition whereby coronary arteries become narrowed by a gradual build-up of fatty deposits called atheroma. As the British Heart Foundation explains, if a piece of atheroma breaks off, a blood clot forms around this to try and repair the damage to the artery wall. Continue reading

Blocking Brain Signals Detected in the Kidney Could Help Unlock Future Treatments for Kidney Failure, Heart Disease, and Stroke – Newswise
Posted: Published on June 16th, 2020
Newswise Scientists have discovered an important cell signalling pathway in the kidney which if stopped, could hold the key to treating chronic kidney disease as well as other deadly conditions, including heart attack and stroke. The pathway was already known to exist in the brain, where it helps to maintain the bodys energy balance, but this is the first time it has been found in the kidney. The pioneering research led by the University of Bristol, published today in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(PNAS) the official journal of theUnited States National Academy of Sciences identified a substance called Neuropeptide Y (Npy), present in high levels in the brain, in the filtering unit of the kidney.
