No association between lung cancer risk in women, reproductive history or hormone use
Posted: Published on April 11th, 2015
The Women's Health Initiative Studies, a large prospective study of lung cancer, found no strong associations between lung cancer risk and a wide range of reproductive history variables and only revealed weak support for a role of hormone use in the incidence of lung cancer. In the United States 40% of the 160,000 deaths from lung cancer are women. In men 90% of lung cancer deaths are associated with tobacco usage; however in women this number is around 75-80%. Female never-smokers are more likely to develop lung cancer than male never-smokers and the histological subtype of lung cancer is different between men and women. Women have a better prognosis with a 5-year survival rate of 20% compared to 15.4% for men. Given these gender differences there is a need to understand the potential role of reproductive factors and hormone use in determining lung cancer risk in women. The Women's Health Initiative Observational Study and Clinical Trials enrolled a geographically and ethnically diverse cohort of 161,808 postmenopausal women age 50-79 years between 1993 and 1998 at 40 centers across the United States. Reproductive history, oral contraceptive use, and hormone therapy replacement was evaluated in the 160,855 women eligible to be included … Continue reading

FAQ: Hormonal Therapy for Menopause
Posted: Published on March 31st, 2015
March 31, 2015 -- If you're in menopause, you might wonder if hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can help or harm your health. Research on the pros and cons of HRT has been on a rollercoaster-like path for decades. Some studies say it's good for you. Others warn it isn't. New research cites even more risks. Is it safe or not? Two women's health experts answer common questions. Why the HRT confusion? "When hormone therapy first came out, it was highly promoted, like it was the fountain of youth," says Lynn Pattimakiel, MD, who works at the Center for Specialized Women's Health at the Cleveland Clinic. In the 1980s, research showed it could ward off osteoporosis and maybe heart disease. Such things are common after menopause. But in 2002, a big study released by the Women's Health Initiative said HRT made a woman more likely to have heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. Other reports from the program said it raised the risk of breast cancer. This triggered a lot of fear and worry. "Women stopped taking the hormones when the trial results were released," says JoAnn Pinkerton, MD, director of the Midlife Division at the University of Virginia. Five years … Continue reading

Angelina Jolies bio-identical therapy raises hormone questions
Posted: Published on March 27th, 2015
Angelina Jolie Susan Donaldson James TODAY contributor March 26, 2015 at 1:22 PM ET Angelina Jolie, thrust into early menopause followingpreventive cancer surgery, said she's using bio-identical hormones a choice that's raised new questions about the safest therapies for easing menopause symptoms. Getty Images file Angelina Jolie recently underwent a second cancer-prevention surgery. Jolie, 39, said in aNew York Times op-ed piece Tuesday that she had consulted both Eastern and Western doctors, looking for natural ways to deal with her cancer risk. It's unclear what specific types of hormones Jolie might be taking, but without hormone replacement therapy, she'd cope with the typical symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, vaginal dryness, insomnia and mood swings. Because shes experiencing menopause much earlier than the average age of 51, she also would be at risk for early osteoporosis and cardiovascular problems. Bio-identical means a lab-made hormone meant to be molecularly similar to the estrogen and progesterone produced in women's bodies. There are dozens of hormone products on the market, and hormone replacement therapy available today is very different from formulations sold in the 1990s and earlier. The Food and Drug Administration approves some plant-based hormones, but cautions about using those made by unregulated … Continue reading
