Columbus, OH (PRWEB) December 21, 2014 As testosterone therapy lawsuit filings on behalf of men alleging heart attacks, stroke and blood clots from using testosterone products such as AndroGel and Androderm, continue to increase, a new study shows that the male hormone testosterone may increase the risk of men developing colon cancer. In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences in November, lead researcher, James Amos-Landgraf examined a group of male rats with naturally occurring colon cancer. Dr. Amos-Landgraf, an assistant professor of veterinary pathobiology at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine, then removed testosterone from the rats and the colon cancer rates drastically decreased. When he placed the testosterone back into the rats, the colon cancer rates returned to normal. Dr. Amos-Landgraf, in a news release, said,by showing that removing testosterone from rats leads to a drastic decrease in colon cancer susceptibility, it appears that male hormones may actually contribute to colon tumor growth rather than female hormones being protective. Dr. Amos-Landgraf added that post-menopausal women are more susceptible to colon cancer due to the increase of their testosterone levels. PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 18-Dec-2014 Contact: Rebecca Jones rjones@rcog.org.uk 44-207-772-6444 Wiley Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the most effective treatment for menopausal symptoms, in particular for younger women at the onset of the menopause, suggests a new review published today (19 December) in The Obstetrician & Gynaecologist (TOG). The review highlights that menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes and night sweats are common, affecting around 70% of women for an average of 5 years but may continue for many years in about 10% of women. Every woman experiences the menopause differently; some experience one or two symptoms mildly while others have more severe symptoms. Menopausal symptoms can be debilitating and can adversely affect a woman's quality of life. HRT is a medical treatment for the menopause. It provides low doses of the hormone estrogen, with or without progestogen, which a woman no longer produces. The review notes that the risk-benefit ratio of HRT has always been debated and discusses previous studies examining the effects of HRT. The Women's Health Initiative Study in 2003 examined the effect of HRT on healthy postmenopausal women with a particular interest in cardiovascular outcomes. A class-action lawsuit that alleged links between a hormone replacement therapy drug and breast cancer involving up to 132 women in B.C. is expected to reach a settlement in the B.C. Supreme Court early next year. Douglas Lennox, a class-action lawyer at Klein Lyons, said on Tuesday the case involving the drugs Premarin and Premplus used to relieve symptoms of menopause has been tentatively settled, and the defendant company Wyeth has agreed to pay $13.65 million to a potential 1,120 claimants across the country. The case was initially scheduled for trial on Oct. 14, but a tentative settlement was made just three days prior to that, Lennox said. The court has to review it and decide whether to thumbs up or thumbs down if the court doesnt like (the tentative deal), well have to reschedule a trial, he said. Over 1,000 people signed up for the case and the only chance to review the documents, once theyre finalized, they can vote yes or no.
