UTMB part of national research group awarded $20 million HIV grant

Posted: Published on November 26th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 25-Nov-2014 Contact: Donna Ramirez donna.ramirez@utmb.edu 409-772-8791 University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston @utmb_news The University of Texas Medical Branch is part of a collaboration led by the Oak Crest Institute of Science that received a $20 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to develop a novel intravaginal ring capable of delivering powerful antiretroviral drugs to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted HIV in women. The total award to UTMB is approximately $2.5 million. After more than 40 years of research, prevention of HIV infection continues to be a critical global health priority. The World Health Organization reports that there are approximately 35 million people currently living with HIV, with about 70 percent from Sub-Saharan Africa. Intravaginal rings, available commercially for contraception and hormone replacement therapy, show promise as a drug delivery system to prevent HIV infection, but most prototypes can't deliver multiple-drug combinations of the many available HIV antiretroviral drugs. While combinations of three antiretroviral drugs are highly successful in treatment of HIV/AIDS, their use in an intravaginal rings platform for HIV prevention has not been possible until now. This project is, in large part, enabled by the pod-intravaginal ring platform. The team has … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Therapy, HRT / ERT – Welcome to the …

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

Hormone Replacement Therapy is the substitution of naturally occurring hormones in the human body with those that are manufactured. In the case of women that have had a hysterectomy we are talking about oestrogen and possibly testosterone replacement therapy. When a woman has had a hysterectomy that removes her ovaries she will no longer produce oestrogen from her ovaries although she will continue to produce small amounts of oestrogen from the adrenal glands and fatty tissues. However, this will not be enough to counteract the possible effects of oestrogen deficiency that we see begin with the onset of the menopause. If a woman has a hysterectomy that leaves her ovaries in place, she has a 50% chance of suffering ovarian failure within five years of surgery. This is not age dependent. There are many things that women need to consider when they are faced with an surgical menopause and one of the major issues is whether or not to take Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). HRT can be beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of the menopause. Women should also consider the fact that they will be longer without the female sex hormones than their age related peers and that some of … Continue reading

Healthy or harmful? The truth about soy

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2014

Soy a protein made from the soybean plant - has gained a lot of attention in the food and health industry as a nutritiously edible bean with numerous uses. It is rich in omega-3 fats, B-vitamins, zinc, iron, polyunsaturated fat, fiber, phytochemicals and antioxidants. Most popular within the vegetarian community, soy protein is a replacement for animal protein - one cup contains 23 grams of protein (about half the daily requirement). Soy is found in popular foods including tofu, edamame, tempeh and soy milk. Soy contains isoflavones, which are changed in the body to phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are similar to the hormone estrogen. Women often use soy as a hormone replacement therapy to relieve menopause-related symptoms. It has also been linked to the prevention and control heart disease and cancer. However, the effects of soy are controversial. Human cells, including cancer cells, have protein receptors that are extremely particular about the molecules they bind to. The fit between the two determines how that cell is going to behave - they will either trigger a cells activity or block it. Soy can do both. Because human estrogen and soy-derived phytoestrogen are so similar, human cells cannot distinguish between the two. Some believe … Continue reading

Pros and Cons Associated with Hormone Replacement Therapy

Posted: Published on November 19th, 2014

For many women, the side effects of menopause can be unbearable and can last anywhere from six months to five years and most often include hot flashes. "It's this surge of heat that can start from the toes and work its way up to the head. Sometimes it starts in the center and bubbles up and makes them hot and sweaty. And that's the biggest complaint because you can't necessarily control them," said Heather Shannon, CNM certified nurse midwife, Upstate University Hospital midwifery and gynecology director. Those symptoms are caused by the body's natural loss of hormones as women age. Hormone Replacement Therapy is one treatment option to minimize symptoms, but it doesn't come without risks. "Studies have shown that those synthetic hormones, the progesterones, the progestins can increase your risks for stokes, clots, heart attacks and for cancers, specifically breast cancer," said Shannon. But new technology has given women other options. There are natural, plant-based hormones that can be purchased in local health food and supplement stores. Plus, now there's more sophisticated option called compound hormone replacement therapy or bio-identical hormone replacement therapy. "That is hormones that are made based on your blood values or your saliva tests. So … Continue reading
