Some cancers, like breast and prostate cancer, are driven by hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, but to date, there are none that are driven by the lack of a hormone. New evidence suggests that human colon cells may become cancerous when they lose the ability to produce a hormone that helps the cells maintain normal biology. If verified by further studies, it suggests that treating patients at high risk for colon cancer by replacing the hormone guanylin could prevent the development of cancer. The researchers at Thomas Jefferson University examined colon cancer samples from 281 patients and compared those tissues to nearby colon tissue that wasn't cancerous. They found that guanylin production -- measured by number of messenger RNAs for guanylin contained in each cell -- decreased 100 to 1,000 times in more than 85 percent of colon cancers tested. They verified their results by also staining for the guanylin hormone production in slices of the tissue samples. They could detect no guanylin hormone in the cancer samples. Published October 10, 2014 Gene replacement therapy could hold promise in treating colon cancer, reveals a study published Friday in the journal Cancer, Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. While some cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer, are caused by an increase in hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, scientists have not yet identified a type of cancer driven by a lack of hormones. But researchers at Thomas Jefferson University found that colon cancer cells may become cancerous when they lose the ability to produce a hormone that helps maintain normal biology. Researchers studied 281 patients with colon cancer. In more than 85 percent of patients, overall production of the hormone guanylin decreased 100 to 1,000 times. Comparing healthy colon tissue with cancerous colon tissue, researchers were unable to detect the hormone in the cancerous tissue. "The fact that the vast majority of cancers stop producing this hormone leads us to believe that guanylin may be driving the growth of the tumors," senior author Scott Waldman, chair of the Thomas Jefferson University department of pharmacology & experimental therapeutics, said in a news release. Cape Town - British businessman Shrien Dewani had hormone problems and underwent testosterone replacement therapy, the Western Cape High Court heard on Monday. "I decided to undergo this treatment despite the side-effects. Having my own family was important to me," he explained in a plea document. Dewani has pleaded not guilty to the murder of his wife Anni in Cape Town in 2010, and other related charges. An endocrinologist told him in 2009 that he had abnormally low levels of the hormone and may have trouble reproducing. He was warned of the side-effects, including the risk of blood clots, sleep apnoea, breast enlargement, weight gain, and acne. "I discussed my problem with Anni as I knew that she wanted children as well." Earlier, it was revealed he was bisexual and had sexual interactions with both men and women.
