FDA to Probe Testosterone Therapy Claims, Safety

Posted: Published on September 17th, 2014

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay Reporter TUESDAY, Sept. 16, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is focusing on the "Low T" fad, questioning whether the boom in testosterone replacement therapy is helping or harming the health of aging American males. At a joint meeting scheduled for Sept. 17-18, two key FDA committees will discuss whether doctors are prescribing testosterone therapy for too many men, and if misuse of the male hormone increases the risk of stroke and heart attack. The Baby Boom generation has turned to testosterone replacement therapy in response to the sagging muscles, lower energy levels and sexual problems that can accompany natural aging, the FDA noted in a review provided to committee members in advance of the meeting. "There's a large group of men out there who are getting older, and they are looking for ways to evade the consequences of aging," said Dr. Bradley Anawalt, an endocrinologist from the University of Washington in Seattle. However, the FDA review pointed out there's no clear scientific evidence showing testosterone replacement can reverse some of the effects of aging. BRASILIA, Brazil For the past several years, testosterone replacement therapy has been one of the most controversial topics in the sport of MMA. Regulating the use of the hormone therapy proved such a challenging process that the Nevada State Athletic Commission in February banned the procedure, and UFC officials also followed suit. But where does that leave Antonio Silvaahead of Saturdays UFC Fight Night 51: Bigfoot vs. Arlovski 2 event? Its unfortunate that the good sometimes pay for the bad, but Im going to keep fighting anyway, Silva told MMAjunkie. Brazilian slugger Bigfoot Silva, 34, suffers from acromegaly, a form of gigantism that occurs when the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone. Silva has dealt with the condition throughout his MMA career, and it will force him to undergo surgery later this month. Low testosterone and exercise

Salisbury, North Carolina All right guys, this one is for you. Last week, I wrote about menopause. This week, it's the guy version of hormone changes. There are all kinds of reasons for hypogonadism, which means that the testicles don't produce enough of the male sex hormone testosterone. Or, as we hear it often called, low T. Aging is a big reason for testosterone levels dropping. Around age 30, most men start to experience a gradual decline. Common symptoms from a drop in testosterone can be: Loss of strength Loss of sex drive Being more fatigued Feeling depressed Before you blame it all on low T, have your doctor do a blood test. Nowadays, tests are very accurate and they can determine where your levels are. When they were not so accurate, it was hard to pinpoint the true causes of the symptoms. The symptoms of low T can be mirrored by other medical problems such as diabetes, depression, high blood pressure and coronary disease, to name a few. Again, have your doctor diagnose whether the problem is low testosterone or other medical issues. Read more: Low testosterone and exercise … Continue reading
