For the first time, proof of what hormone replacement therapy does to genes involved in breast cancer
Posted: Published on May 4th, 2014
Researchers have measured activity of genes associated with breast cancer in women before and while, they took different types of HRT. They found that an HRT used in the WHI trial had a greater activating effect on these genes than a "natural" formulation applied via an estrogen gel applied to the skin in combination with oral progesterone. This shows that varying the HRT and the way it is taken can have very significant effects on the genes associated with breast cancer. New research has found that the type of HRT a woman takes, and the way it is taken, can have a significantly different effect on genes associated with breast cancer. This finding, presented at the World Congress on the Menopause in Cancun, Mexico, opens the way to identify which forms of HRT have minimal effect on breast cancer. It also gives the long-term possibility of personalising HRT according to the genes which a woman expresses. Since the publication of the Women's Health Initiative report on HRT in 2002, many women have been worried about the effect of HRT on breast cancer. The International Menopause Society states that the increase in breast cancer is small, but that recommends that HRT … Continue reading

Denied Hormone Treatment, Ohio Trans Prisoner Files Lawsuit
Posted: Published on May 2nd, 2014
A transgender woman serving a three-year sentence is suing the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction after being denied medically necessary hormone treatments. Whitney Lee A transgender inmate has filed a lawsuit against the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction after her hormone treatments were discontinued in February 2012. Whitney Lee, a transgender woman serving a three-year sentence at Mansfield Correctional Institution on forgery and theft charges, began hormone replacement therapy in 1999. Her treatment was halted in February 2012 after a prison psychiatrist concluded that Lee did not meet the medical criteria for gender dysphoria, and therefore should no be allowed continued access to treatment. Gender dysphoria is characterized in the latest edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as "a marked difference between the individual's expressed/experienced gender and the gender others would assign him or her." The DSM elaborates, "It must continue for at least six months. In children, the desire to be of the other gender must be present and verbalized. This condition causes clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning." Lee, 36, has been living as a woman since she was 18. The … Continue reading

NJ-Based Law Firm Exploring Potential Legal Claims from Side Effects of Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Posted: Published on April 30th, 2014
Woodbridge, NJ (PRWEB) April 30, 2014 On April 14, 2014, the United States Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation gave notice that a hearing session has been scheduled in In re: AndroGel Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2545, to consider the centralization and coordination of matters involving Testosterone Replacement Therapy. As noted by the FDA in its January 31, 2014 safety announcement, testosterone is a hormone essential to the development of male growth and masculine characteristics. Testosterone therapy is designed to help men combat the natural decline in testosterone levels as they age. Otherwise known as low T therapy, it helps to increase testosterone levels, increase muscle mass and bone density, reduce body fat and improve sex drive. Recent studies have linked prescription testosterone use with an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death. In November 2013, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an observational study that suggested a 30 percent increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in the group that had been prescribed testosterone therapy. A second observational study was conducted jointly by UCLA, the National Institutes of Health and Consolidated Research, Inc. The PLOS ONE study published in January 2014, reported a two-fold … Continue reading

Women: Depressed, agitated, can't sleep? It could be hormones
Posted: Published on April 30th, 2014
Rosemarie Shaheen Healy endured plenty of life changes in her 40s and early 50s. She moved twice and went through a divorce. Her sons grew up and left home, and she had a hip replacement. On top of all that, Healy, of San Jose, was juggling a private therapy practice and a full-time job as academic dean of an all-girls private high school. Still, her mood swings, irritability and insomnia didn't feel like normal responses to difficult life transitions. Healy says they felt "physical" -- outside of her control and totally beyond anything she had ever experienced. When she noticed girls at her school become sad and moody around the times of their periods, it dawned on her that it might be raging hormones that were messing with her mental health. Sure enough, after finding a nurse practitioner willing to prescribe hormone therapy, Healy started to feel less "snappish" and could deal better with most everything else. "One of the nice benefits was that I could sleep much better," she says. Many women of a certain age can relate to Healy's struggle with baffling and disabling mood symptoms. Fortunately, a growing number of doctors and mental health professionals are honing … Continue reading

HRT: Not just a women's health issue
Posted: Published on April 28th, 2014
There was a time when hormone replacement was primarily considered a women's health issue. But testosterone levels in men peak in their late teens and decrease about one percent a year, every year, once you hit 30. Your energy level, sexual function, muscle mass and bone density are all connected to the hormone. And before you see your doctor, there are some facts you need to know. MOBILE/TABLET USERS: Watch The Video Norm Dubin is active, fit, and very guarded about his age. But we do know Norm started taking testosterone under a doctor's care more than 10 years ago. "I was getting older, I was slowing down," he told WPBF 25 News. "I was losing my energy. and I was always a very active guy to begin with. And I felt it was time for me to make a change." In that one sentence, Dubin sums up what leads most men to think about hormone replacement. Boca Raton-based Dr. Mark Rosenberg, an anti-aging expert, said the No. 1 complaint his patients have before therapy is that they just don't feel well, like they used to. "It's energy level," Rosenberg said. "Many men get very fatigued. Their drive, not just … Continue reading
