Low Testosterone May Be Linked to Heart Problems

Posted: Published on September 25th, 2013

Released: 9/20/2013 2:00 PM EDT Embargo expired: 9/24/2013 1:00 PM EDT Source Newsroom: Endocrine Society Newswise Chevy Chase, MDMen who have low testosterone levels may have a slightly elevated risk of developing or dying from heart disease, according to a recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Societys Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM). Testosterone is a key male sex hormone that helps maintain sex drive, sperm production and bone health. Over time, low testosterone may contribute to an increase in body fat, loss of body hair and muscle bulk. When we reviewed the existing research into testosterone and cardiovascular disease, a growing body of evidence suggested a modest connection between the two. A specific pathogenesis did not come forward, but perhaps less frequently investigated events may play a role, such as thrombosis where a blood clot develops in the circulatory system or arrhythmia, where there is a problem with the heart beat or rate, said the studys lead author, Johannes Ruige, MD, PhD, of Ghent University Hospital in Belgium. Based on current findings, though, we cannot rule out that low testosterone and heart disease both result from poor overall health. Treating low testosterone with replacement therapy did … Continue reading

Male hormone replacement therapy may have heart benefits

Posted: Published on September 21st, 2013

AVENTURA, Fla - Joshua Wapner may look like the picture of health, but his past tells a different story. "At 30, my father had his first heart attack. At 35, he had a triple bypass, second heart attack, and triple-bypass surgery," said Wapner, 36. "He died at age 45, actually on my 17th birthday." Wapner went to Soffer Health with one of the worst family histories that Dr. Ari Soffer said he had ever seen. "On my father's side, there's eight relatives over the past 40 years who all died of heart attacks at young ages, no one going above the age of 53," he said. Wapner underwent a stress test and blood work, which showed he had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and low testosterone. The combination made him a good candidate for hormone replacement therapy, which studies say can be beneficial for the right patients. "If you look at what testosterone does, it's not only for libido. It's also for basic metabolic processes," said Dr. Adam Splaver with Memorial Healthcare. "So if you optimize their metabolism, you can optimize their cardiac function." Studies on patients with advanced congestive heart failure as well as those with chronic stable angina … Continue reading

Body type and race are factors in hormone therapy risks for women

Posted: Published on September 20th, 2013

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - For a woman contemplating taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), the increase in breast cancer risk she faces may depend on her individual body type, race and ethnicity, according to new U.S. research. In a large new study of women on HRT, slim and normal-weight women with dense breast tissue saw a nearly 50 percent increase in breast cancer risk, while women who were black or overweight with less-dense breast tissue showed no risk increase at all. "With many medications, the effects aren't the same for everybody, either for prevention or treatment," Dr. Dezheng Huo of the University of Chicago, one of the new study's authors, told Reuters Health. For decades, menopausal women routinely took estrogen alone or estrogen with progestin to cope with hot flashes and night sweats. Conventional medical wisdom held that HRT, because it kept estrogen levels high, would also protect the heart and maintain bone strength. But the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), a large, long-term clinical trial, found that HRT did not reduce women's heart attack risk and actually raised the risk of stroke. Moreover, that study showed a 24 percent increased risk of invasive breast cancer in women who took estrogen … Continue reading

Nicole Gibson, Transgender Model, Walks In London Fashion Week

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2013

Days before her planned gender reassignment surgery, a transgender model wowed audiences on the catwalk at London's Fashion Week, just two years after beginning hormone replacement therapy. Nicole Gibson, 32, took part in the Catwalk For Change campaign for Models of Diversity, a fashion showcase that sought to challenge the lack of diversity within the fashion industry. "The fashion show was amazing," said Gibson. "They say you have not really made it as a model until you walk along the catwalk in a sheer dress with your nipples showing -- and here I was doing it in my first show. Luckily, thanks to the hormones, I have quite a nice pair now. I didnt have time to get nervous, I was just so excited." Up until her 20s, Gibson identified as a gay man. She then started to wear women's clothing for a number of years before deciding to begin hormone replacement therapy. "To me it is just something that I have to do," stated Gibson. "It is like having two horns on my head that I have to get rid of to become the person that I have always felt I was inside.' Prior to embarking on her modeling … Continue reading

Study: Different hormone therapy formulations may pose different risks for heart attack and stroke

Posted: Published on September 18th, 2013

Public release date: 18-Sep-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Sally Stewart sally.stewart@cshs.org 310-248-6566 Cedars-Sinai Medical Center LOS ANGELES (Embargoed Until 9 a.m. EDT/6 a.m. PDT on Sept. 18, 2013) Post-menopausal women whose doctors prescribe hormone replacement therapy for severe hot flashes and other menopause symptoms may want to consider taking low doses of Food and Drug Administration-approved bioidentical forms of estrogen or getting their hormones via a transdermal patch. A new observational study shows bioidentical hormones in transdermal patches may be associated with a lower risk of heart attack and FDA-approved products -- not compounded hormones -- may be associated with a slightly lower risk of stroke compared to synthetic hormones in pill form. "If confirmed by future randomized trials, these findings may be significant because for the past decade, many women who experienced severe menopause symptoms opted not to use hormone therapy because of the reported increased risk of stroke and heart attacks," said Chrisandra Shufelt, MD, director of the Women's Hormone and Menopause Program at the Barbra Streisand Women's Heart Center in the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. Shufelt said the study's findings are not conclusive and are based on observational follow-up, not a randomized clinical trial. Additionally, … Continue reading
